I'm trying to beat the original NES Castlevania legit without using save states but I'm getting filtered so hard. It's driving me crazy>Can only whip directly in front of you>No air control after you jump>Game takes away your whip upgrades and subweapon when you die>Every time you get hit Simon flies 20 feet back so if you instantly die if you are near any ledges>Tons of enemies that have projectiles and fly all over the screen that are extremely hard to hit without the holy water or axeHow the fuck did people manage to get through this back in the day? I managed to get up to the grim reaper once but I couldn't beat him. This shit is making me suicidal
Beat it on real hardware in one evening. You have terminal case of not being gud.
>>735040891>How the fuck did people manage to get through this back in the day?Same as any game today. You learn enemy patterns and anticipate. When you know what they're going to do you'll know where and when to strike. Its simply less forgiving than modern games but it not like its impossible. You're simply trained to expect leniency
It's a 20 minutes game. It's not hard once you learn it.
>>735040891Cause it was all you fucking had so you better play it.
>>735040891unlimited continues, it has to be one of the easiest nes games.
>>735040891If you think this is hard, just wait until you play CV3.
>>735040891>Game takes away your whip upgrades and subweapon when you dieYou get them back soon enough after hitting a couple of candles. Here, play the easier Jap version, it's more your speed.
>>735041405>the easier Jap versionThe japanese version is easier? How the fuck did that happen?
>>735040891>Can only whip directly in front of youThat's what subweapons are for.>No air control after you jumpAn.ti.ci.pate>Game takes away your whip upgrades and subweapon when you dieDon't die.>Every time you get hit Simon flies 20 feet back so if you instantly die if you are near any ledgesDodge.>Tons of enemies that have projectiles and fly all over the screen that are extremely hard to hit without the holy water or axeDODDDDDGE
>>735040891You have to keep trying until you've memorized the enemy patterns when you approach them, particularly from stage 3 onward. For the Grim Reaper you'll need holy water with the x2 or x3 upgrade if you want to get past him during your lifetime, just immediately start chucking it at him the moment he spawns.Sucks but that's how NES games are, they used extreme difficulty to hide their short length. This game does throw you a bone though: even if you game over on the Dracula fight, you'll respawn at the stairs leading up to him.
>>735041669That was usually the case back in the day. The cranked up the difficulty for the US versions to fight rentals.
>>735040891I appreciate that you didn't immediately start crying about artificial difficulty and bad game design upon encountering some adversity, like a lot of people seem to do. In any case, though, it just takes some practice. It's really not as difficult as it might seem at first.
>>735040891Dude you are so fucking close, keep the holy water when you do the game over "runback" which isnt even that long, and rape the grim reaper with it. Dracula is not far behind himI believe in you anon now get off /v/ and finish that fucking video game
>>735041669It was a means to fight rentals in the states. Japan has anti-rental laws for games so devs balanced the difficulty for home play on the assumption you bought from a store. Overseas, it was different, as the rental industry was big enough publishers (and Nintendo) were afraid game rentals would eat into profits for purchased games, so the difficulty would get cranked up so no one would beat a game in one night (or worse, find out a game is shit and never buy it because a one night rental was enough to know you wouldn't waste 60 bucks on a full purchase).
>>735040891Patience. All you can do is git gud
>>735041785Infinite continues by itself means the game is easier than Bloodlines.
Make sure your monitor is set to gaming mode. CRT televisions had zero lag.
>>735041669>The japanese version is easier? How the fuck did that happen?like the other anons said, rentals. a lot of "1 hit and you're dead" games like contra used to have life bars
>>735040891>How the fuck did people manage to get through this back in the day?the same way good players get through souls games today: patience and not rushing in like an idiot. it's literally the same exact skillset.
>>735040891How old are you? I find it interesting to see young shits go back and attempt classics.
>>735041669That continued into the PS2 days fyi, it wasn’t just NES games. I’m not sure if there are any PS3 games where it continued or if that’s where they stopped
>>735043915Name 10 post-NES games.
>>735044005Super Mario WorldThe Elder Scrolls 3 MorrowindSystem Shock 2Final Fantasy VIICall of duty 4: Modern WarfareWarcraft 3Metroid PrimeResident Evil RequiemStar Fox 64The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
>>735044338>SMWThe US version makes it easier. The rest of your list is likely completely worthless.
>>735044516I wasn’t referring to difficulty you just asked for 10 post-nes gamesIf you mean ones where they were harder in the west, Resident Evil, MGS and DMC were all harder in the western releases. There’s a reason why European Extreme became a difficulty mode. An anon earlier mentioned Contra and that includes the Contras that came after the NES so that should bring it to 10
>>735044725>I wasn’t referring to difficulty you just asked for 10 post-nes gamesDid you think this was funny? Or are you just a bot that doesn't understand how conversations work?
Unlimited continues means never game over
