What do we think of Romeo is a Dead Man?

combat and character progression are a bit simple but the world is really interesting and probably the best part of the game, classic Suda absurdism.

I didn't know it released.
What kind of game is it?
>>
>>735050885
I thought /v/ would hate Romeo and call it "wokeslop" because of him.
>>
>>735051124
It's an Action RPG kinda like Demon's Souls, but with a lot of style to it.
>>
>>735050280
I liked it enough to get all the achievements.
It felt generic by suda standards which is easily its greatest sin.
>>
>>735051410
I thought Riadm was about as good as No More Heroes 1
>>
Romeo Must Die would've been a better title.
>>
>>735051705
It's gameplay is some of the best grasshopper has done which definitely put's it up there for me but nothing about the story and style struck me the way NMH, K7, or The Silver Case did. It felt bland after experiencing so much of GHMs catalogue already.

I thought the story was really solid. I really like how Suda written TheBlack and Magrus
>>
>>735050280
Stupid, banal, off-the-wall bullshit that Suda51 should realize it's getting stale by now.
I can abide by the "kimidori green" rant from Midori in NMH3. But this feels like something Yorgos Lanthimos would write and direct and think this is what we want.

Fucking unbelievably stupid.
>>
>>735052050
Dive deeper, bro. This is just like NMH1

>>
>>735052165
At least NMH1 was fine with how much it played itself straight. And it was part of that "Kill the past" era of games for Suda that spanned between FSR/Killer7 and the NMH. So there was each a consistent tone and feel between each of the respective games.
Post-2011, everything about Suda just seemed to have gotten worse. Everything was overly a subtext for meta-humor and pop-culture references that it wore itself out on me. Killer Is Dead and Let It Die were diamonds in the rough. But the rest became universally insufferable.
This game, I feel, is proof of how unnecessarily irrelevant Suda has become and it just seems straight-up, for lack of better words beyond zoomer parlance, out-of-pocket for them to do by concocting this facetious, subversive Shakespearean romance.
I could go on in proclivity about it but tl;dr I don't like it.
>>
>>735050280
It's an overwhelmingly fucking terrible game with so many different gameplay design issues that it would make experimental PS2 titles blush. Matter of fact it's so incredibly fucking bad you have to wonder at what point did the developers decide to double down on their own retardation and started pretending it was on purpose, this is however balanced by a genuine wish to tell a fragmented chapter of a larger story that didn't feel annoying and was surprisingly delivered honestly. You know it's a Suda game when everything but the gameplay is great.
TL:DR; It sucks. I liked it.
>>
>>735050280
a piece of shit. A massive turd that's not worth anything
>>
>>735052039
you're kidding right? I can understand why you'd like some characters but the story is pure trash and the writing is most of the time just the kind of dialogue you came up at night with yourself before sleeping.

It was a kino romantic tragedy.
Romeo is doomed to eventually fall out of love with Juliette.
Juliette is doomed to fall in love with a man who doesn't love her back after its already too late.

that final boss is totally bullshit though especially on hard but I persevered

apparently the overall narrative is structured like a very bare version of a certain buddhist story which kinda tracks but it was evidently rushed out after NetEase cut off their funding

So the story was basically-

>Romeo and Juliette are like Adam and Eve spacetime gods stuck in eternal time loops
>Romeo doesn't know he's a spacetime god, he's the man in the TV (from an old loop)
>Romeo keeps killing versions of Juliette hoping to find "the true one"
>At the end he realizes they were all Juliette, he just couldn't accept her for who she was
>Romeo finally matures and realizes Juliette wasn't the one (she hates Shakespeare) and accepts his role as the new spacetime god
>This is actually when Juliette falls in love with him, but since he no longer loves her she has to go back in time to meet him
>This causes the events of the game to happen in the first place, and the time loop cycle repeats (with slight variations)
>Cliffhanger ending at the diner where its unclear if there's ever a time loop where Romeo and Juliette end up together

Like Romeo and Juliette, it's the eternal story about young dumb love basically? Does anybody else have any other read on it?
>>
>>735056487
Its not directed by Suda. I think its just made look that way because of marketing. Its directed by Ren Yamazaki who directed Black Knight Sword, a grasshopper XBLA that came out during the 360 days.

>romeo is doomed to fall out of love

huh? where does it say that? JEH did the opposite of romeo, hence he ends up where people are dead inside. unless this is something from NG+

>>
>>735056414
The first boss is not that hard, the final boss you genuinely have to play differently and pay attention
your dodge takes way too many recover frames that you will get you hit again and on hard that motherfucker hits HARD
>>
>>735056634
juliette is responsible for JEH. the entire story is about a fight against entropy, represented by a corrupted official in charge of the of the world.

I remember there's a document in the game about the fish taken out from the ocean and placed in a tank but it blissfully unaware that its contained in said tank .
Seems like a pretty direct reference to Romeo's situation especially since its even depicted in the main menu.
Its a pretty easily missable document despite being important to the main theme of the story.
>>
>>735057092
romeo is half a person. the other person is kinda obvious. it's a story about purge and renewal. the ending reveal wraps it all up, both Romeo and Juliet are following their programming

Are you referring to the Yakumo thing in K7?
Why wouldnt they be able to say yakumo and be done?
>>

the VAs pronounce it normally but it's "censored" in the subtitles. or maybe I'm just misreading why they did it. in any case, the NAKED is like a positive version of K7's Kun Lan

sounds like a genuinely interesting game based on my cursory reading of the thread, but the fact that nothing interesting about the gameplay has been mentioned suggests I shouldn't play it.
i dont play expensive story focused games.
>>
>>735059696
it's a pretty fun hack and slash with four melee and four ranged weapons to choose from. it has special abilities you can farm kinda like an RPG and use them in battle, they're pretty important for the harder fights and especially the hard chocolate orange mode. the only thing I'll knock the combat on is lack of enemy variety.
>>
>>735059696
Key twist to Romeo from an action game perspective is that you have a meter that fills as you hit bosses that gives you both a special to wallop the bosses with and also heal you at the same time. Is a nice change of pace from a ton of games that just want you to parry everything, you are supposed to get really up in enemies faces to super armor through crap and get your bloody off. Bosses are fun, lots of journos and people in the early threads were complaining that Orange Chocolate was too hard or too spongey - they're just playing the game wrong. It's fun
>>
>>735059696
>>735060142
Oh, and Bastards - there are tons of support monsters you grab throughout the game that act as special skills, debuff bosses, add glowing flowers to bosses that stagger if you snipe em

I finished it last night. It was fun, but it really started to run dry by chapter 7, revisiting city hall and then sub space hills was a clear “the budget has run out”. A bunch of characters seemed underdeveloped or pointless too. They clearly had plans for Jenny but she just got cut in half, RedBrown doesn’t really do anything but she’s central to the promotional art so they probably had plans for her at some point. GreenRiver does nothing, Blue Mountain barely does anything. The enemy variety and weapon selection was nice but crowded corridors got pretty frustrating. The bastards were a great addition to the combat. Overall, 7/10, I’m still chasing the feeling Killer7 gave me 20 years ago. I think Susa is too after listening to Cheat Code.

Apparently the final boss has the same name of the mcguffin documents in Killer7 or something. I have no fucking clue what it means, but i am damn sure that it's more than an easter egg because Suda for some reason still wants to have all his games connected in some fashion.
>>
I hate sudafags
This game is another nonsense garbage not worth visiting, the gameplay is ass like any other of his games, oh sorry grasshoper games
NMH 1 started a trend with his games wacky nonsense adventures, and I fucking hate it.
Also I hate you sudafags for supporting it, I hope he will die soon, I don't want another hope of something remotely as good as killer 7, even though this game was unfinished as fuck.

another fish allusion is romeo being "caliban county deputy sheriff", where caliban is a character in an another shakespeare play called the tempest. and that character is like a subhuman (sometimes described as half man half fish) living on an island alone until a magician and his daughter arrive there and the magician enslaves caliban after he tries to rape the daughter.

Best Suda game in a pretty long time but lacking the political ege of a Silver Case or Killer7. Still, best thing he directed since the original No More Heroes and best thing he wrote since Kurayami Dance.

My man's getting his groove back.

>>
>>735069935
Flower, Sun, and Rain also wasn't very political and I still love this game
>>
>>735074472
I wouldn't say so. It still had the supranational conspiracy angle from Silver Case and actually expanded on it, plus all the implied stuff about genocide and colonialism on Lospass Island.
>>

>>735056415
You literally did not play the game
The game has so many direct references to sudas previous games

>>
>>735074869
>Killer 7 was so good because shinji mikami was tard wrangling suda, you're not going to get anything like that again with suda on his own

That's just baloney. There is a very clear sense of continuity between Silver Case, FSR, Killer7 and 25th Ward. I absolutely think he jas at least one other game like that in him.
>>
>>735074869
Its set in the Kill The Past universe no? Not the first non Suda game to be set there.
>>
>>735075041
I dont know what tard wrangling there was, maybe management wise. Because content wise there was zero tard wrangling with how schizo that game was.
>>
>>735050280
I think the same as I did when I beat it last month. Gameplay is solid, maybe the most solid of any of Grasshopper game, but I still don't care for the story or writing. Felt like it had no memorability of it's own outside of one or two parts and too many weak references like Romeo's "fuckhead" before Phantasm, which was total shit compared to when NMH1 did it. Also aesthetically it's their worst game. I tried out KiD afterwards and it's ridiculous how much cooler and distinct it looks compared to Romeo despite being on a way older version of UE.
>>
>>735075127
killer7 was also really schizo
