Terraria, absolutely. The creative aspect is optional apart from building some basic houses (commie blocks) to hold NPCs. It's mostly an RPG with exploring and digging mechanics.

Vanilla minecraft is not that interesting but there are all kinds of mods, I haven't tried many though.
