Do should I play the campaign before I get any of the DLC? What do you guys do just the classic fighter, cleric, rogue, wizard?

The DLCs added some races and classes the base game lacked. User mod campaigns can also expect you have the full game package, for tilesets that were added to the map maker by the DLCs. the amount of dialogue in the campaign is pretty low. especially if you're comparing it to BG3. my fear is Solasta 2 wants to be BG3 but with solasta 1's writing quality.

On one of the dev streams they've firmly stated that moving to Unreal made creating a dungeon maker system significantly harder and at most they are "looking into it". Considering they are focusing on voice actors and cinematics, while simplifying other tabletop mechanics they had left, like weight system, it's safe to say we aren't gonna see same level of mod support as in 1 for a long time, if ever.
