I've put 20 hours into this game and I don't really like it that much. I'm a 2001 zoomer trying to complete a bunch of "older" RPGs. I loved the first two Fallout and Baldurs Gate games, so I thought this would be right up my alley.

The spritework is very ugly and the green-brown colorpalette isn't very appealing. I don't care for the constant string music in the background, and the companions feel utterly lifeless compared to Baldur's Gate. The setting is admittely very creative but I feel like the game just has too much working against it.

It doesn't help that I'm roleplaying a gunslinger, which I've read online is one of the harder playstyles because of the amount of skill allocation it takes to get gud.

I'm at level 17 and I'm seriously considering dropping it and playing something else. Does /v/ have any Arcanum fans? Am I just crazy or something? Everyone online treats it like a masterpiece but I think it's significantly worse than what came before.

It's trying to induce a depressing atmosphere since it's an industrial revolution game and all that. Personally I like it, I can see why someone wouldn't though

A lot of the fun in these types of game come from your build, and thus how you like to play, and how invested you can be in the story for roley-play purposes.

I really enjoyed it, but it does have significant flaws. I can understand why someone wouldn't care for it even if they like the genre in general, and there's no sense forcing yourself through a game you aren't enjoying.

>I don't care for the constant string music in the background
I do question your taste in music, though.

Don't feel bad about it anon. I'm a crusty old man that bought all of Troika's games in big box form before they went tits up and Arcanum's my least favorite game of theirs. Yes, the setting is amazing and there's a bunch of cool reactivity and ways to solve the quests, but it's way jankier and the combat's far worse than even Fallout 1 and I can't stand playing it either. I reinstall it every few years and give it another try and I always reach a point where I'm just sick of it, even with basic bitch harm builds to try to trivialize it. Planescape Torment has a similar problem but that's still nowhere near as painful as Arcanum when the rubber meets the road. RPGs being somewhat fucked in the combat isn't that unusual but Arcanum's blueballed me for decades because as much as I want to like it since I like the other parts of it Jeeeeeeeeeeeesus Christ

Ty anon. I usually play mage whenever I do fantasy RPGs but I wanted to try something different for the sake of variety. I knew a guns build would be harder but I thought it was one of those "start weak, end the game strong" kind of deals. It's just boring. I feel like I've spent a quarter of the game crafting and looking for ammo. In hindsight I should have honestly just played a harm mage. Oh well. Too late to back out now.

the magic/tech system was experimental and definitely would've gotten tuned if Troika finances hadn't of required they push it out the door in a halfbaked state. it's well regarded for how many things it tried to do--had a lot of heart. But polish? Nope.

I think the main reason I beat it without a lot of stress is because I was happy to use necromancy. The game's content might be patchy, but the harm spell is mechanically versatile in turn-based or real-time modes. Wouldn't be at the top of my list for a replay, even though there is probably dialogue and some quests I haven't seen because I was an sorcerer.

You sound like a faggot and should stick to faggot games.
Play Dragon Age or NWN2 some shit

it didn't click for me until my third or so attempt at the game at around age 30. but yeah it is indeed the best roleplay crpg and the final filter for this style of game. go ahead and drop it and come back when you're ready

Arcanum was always considered mid. Play Planescape: Torment instead.

If you don't know what you're doing, focus on something. Choose either Tech or Magic. Invest in Melee + Dodge. Pump Charisma for a gaggle of followers. Use light and Perception to make shit easier to hit.
It takes a bit to get into the game, and there's a lot to get to, but the game feels incredibly deep in a few scant locations and wide yet shallow in many others. If you truly don't like it, don't play it.
I loved it as a teen and I still like it now, though the companions are mildly dull outside of 7 or 8 of them.

The first time I played it, it was because I was looking for a game like Diablo 2, so I hated it. Then I tried it again like a year later and figured out I could switch the combat to turn-based, and I loved it. My advice is try a different build before you drop it
