Honestly I started out feeling lukewarm on it but I'm on chapter 5 now and it's fantastic. The atmosphere of the original games is still here and everything looks and feels really quality, from the character models and animations to the ghost designs to the sounds and voice acting. The level design is also very nice, very good implementation of side stories to encourage you to go back to previously accessed areas and open up new parts of them. I will likely do multiple playthroughs of this game.
I haven't played a FF game in a long time and I've only played the first two, but I only now realise how much I like the way the games are sort of like a murder mystery (mass murder in this case) where you slowly put together clues to figure out what happened and how the ritual works. Really cool progressive story telling and FF2's story is easily one of the best in the genre. I completely understand why many people dislike it though since it's the exact opposite of Resident Evil with its action gameplay and hype moments.
>>
>>735054104
How does this compare to Resident Evil 9? I'm in the horror mood after that banger.
>>
>>735055272
FF is like classic Resident Evil with less focus on combat and more on level design, navigation, puzzle solving, gathering clues and keys etc.
So if you liked Grace's segments in RE9 you might like this game. But if you really prefer Leon's segments and feel that your entertainment depends on blowing a zombie's head off, then don't get this game.

Much more slower and methodical, atmosphere is fantastic throughout, and the story is dark and depressing and overall a much spookier game.
Although the remake has a more focus on combat and the survival horror gameplay compared to OG.

Well fuck, now I'm getting mixed messages.
>>
>>735055760
>>735055809
The original on PS2, the combat is much more simpler and kind of an afterthought. It was basically a flaw of the OG because of how easy it was.
Remake changed that with much more combat mechanics (like a simple dodge move), and the ghosts that you fight are more aggressive and faster.
>>
How often do ghosts stop you from grabbing items on higher difficulties? I'm playing normal mode and I ragequit and reloaded a save at the beginning of chapter two because a ghost popped up from the first herb outside, and that nigger aggro'd twice because it was before the patch. After reloading to conserve film, I just skipped the item and continued playing for like five hours. When I got back to the herb, the ghost popped up with the tutorial, and I had another ghost pop up later in Osaka House again, but that's it. It seems like a worthless gimmick if it rarely happens, so I have to assume it's more frequent on Nightmare.

Shitty DEmake of the most overrated Fatal Frame.

>>735055272
It easily beats the shit out of it, being a TEMU remake of a true PS2 era survival horror.
But again, you should play the OG trilogy in release order.

FF1 > 3 > 2.

>>735056568
>How often do ghosts stop you from grabbing items on higher difficulties?
I do not know, but this shit's one of THE most annoying modern tropes they added to the nu-FFs.
>>
>>735056568
In my 10 hours playthrough so faron the battle mode, it doesn't seem that bad, its doesn't happen for every item and it seems to be randomzied(died once, go back to pic the item and ghost didn't grab me this time)
It only happened like 4 times so far, you have to worry about opening doors more than picking up items this time because they can randomly jumpscare and attack you with doors now.
>>735056876
its not shitty, pretty good overall and the remake did improve on the meh tier combat of OG.
>>
>>735054104
Games fine, decent enough to play in isolation. Nothing too offensive to completely write it off. But doesn't really add enough to justify is own existence. I would still recommend the PS2 version, along with it's whole trilogy.
>>
>>735055272
This shit sucks balls compared to RE9. It's not scary at all. You can try the demo on steam but note it's censored too so you're better off just emulating the original. These threads are filled with nothing but censorshills as well.

Nah, that art directing is just bad, and of course it's yet another OTS slop that ruins the in-game cinematography and negative space.
And of course it's censored to boot, because of the DEI company.

>But doesn't really add enough to justify is own existence.
It actually expands the game quiet a bit, village is bigger and there's more to explore, there's new side stories missions to learn more about the story, new endings, some new combat mechanics like charms etc.

I'm on chapter 7 and this game's difficulty is all over the place. It starts pretty hard, evens out for a bit until you get the radiant filter, then everything that isn't the Kusabi is a faceroll until you get to that last fight in chapter 6 because what the actual fuck. This shit's a rollercoaster. I am enjoying the expanded exploration though. Following through with side stories, finding filter interactions and hunting for twin dolls is all kino.
>>
>>735054104
I put about 12 hours into it and beat it on battle mode. The combat "clicked" for me about half way somewhere around chapter 4 I think. The engine the game is on is ass and should have unironically been on unreal engine or whatever else. Aside from that I don't really have complaints. I'm not a coomer so I don't care about panty censoring.

Really really annoyed by the jank that is snapping fatal frames when prompted only for the ghosts to just fly through you and take damage even though you did what the game told you to do. This is on PS5. Dunno if it's a genuine fault. Pretty sure this is just slop fucking jank that's probably been in every title in the series. Am I right?

>Really really annoyed by the jank that is snapping fatal frames when prompted only for the ghosts to just fly through you and take damage even though you did what the game told you to do.
So just like every other Fatal Frame game. You have to time the trigger right and move around with right stick so the ghost doesn't accidentally go through you.

>>735055809
In the original all you had to do was wait for a ghost to attack and quickly press trigger button when the screen flashes red. That was the source of highest damage and also staggered the ghost so everything else was pointless chip damage. In the remake you can still do just that but its no longer the main source of damage. Also now high damage normal camera shots can also stagger a ghost so with enough points in damage you can afford to be more aggressive.

The balance is bit off but overall its fun. In early game your camera does shit damage so fights can take a long time. After 30% of the game progress you unlock upgrades that trivialize a lot of the combat. You can even kill the final boss of the game with one shot.
>>
Do I activate the paparazzi mode if i parry after a stagger??
>>
Just finished the game. Got the Crimson Butterfly Ending, which I assume everyone gets initially. The story here is just as good as Silent Hill 2 with a more unique and in-depth combat system but unflinchingly Japanese which is why I assume hardly anyone liked it or gave a shit when it came out. Also has a great credits track
>>
>>735069456
>Got the Crimson Butterfly Ending, which I assume everyone gets initially
Yep, You can get only this and bad one initially. For other endings you need NG+ (chapter select actually) items

In the original yes but not there. You can get 5 endings on any difficulty.
But for the 6th one, you need to beat the whole game on Nightmare without chapterter select and if guide doesn't lie beat the final boss under 1 minute
>>
I just put it down for tonight. I'm gonna try for 100% maybe depending on how I can manage the frustration. I'm still not "skilled" enough with the combat, so I get caught up in jank slop situations and fucked, reload it, and then one shot the shit. Leading me to believe this shit is just inherently jank and frustrating until you "git gud" at it. Another reason this series is seldom played and considered niche.

RE9 is peak kino, top of it's genre. Fatal Frame is something you play when you've already played the classics and giants of the genre like RE and Silent Hill.
>>
>>735073418
They are also completely different approaches to the genre with almost nothing in common aside from the movement/camera perspective. It's like comparing Evil Dead 2 to Ring. They are both great films in the same genre but you would never watch them expecting anything similar.

There is no video game studio in this decade that would ruin their reputation and put themselves at legal risk by putting bikini outfits for little girls in their game. Expedition 33 gave Maelle a swimsuit that covered almost her whole body and that just barely avoided getting them in trouble.
In any case, this game is a remake based on the original PS2 game, which had no revealing outfits.

"horror players" could mean any normalfag that's touched at least one RE game at some point in their life. Those guys have never known about FF, only genre enthusiasts have and there's way less of those. And known in the first place does not always mean bought and played. Even now with the remake there's still way more people that only know of SH2 than there are those that have actually played either iteration of it.
>>

Does this game have better autosaving/checkpointing than 5 did? I enjoyed 5 but replaying it to try and get the collectables I missed like the ghosts that jump in front of you for 0.1 second and then they're gone for good only to keep running into situations where I'd fuck up and miss them and need to reload a checkpoint that was like 15 minutes ago and need to play massive chunks of game all over again so I ended up giving up and didn't even do the NG+ difficulty.

>>735106895
I don't bother with the ghost lists in these games, I feel like I have to read the dev's mind half the time and it makes the game extremely unfun for me to give any fucks about them.

What you described was my biggest complaint with the series in the past, hearing a specter appear somewhere aroung you but it disappearing just before you take a picture of it, so you have to reload a save to get it. But I am happy to report that I have over 10 hours on this remake so far and that has only ever happened once, the movement and camera controls feel a lot more smooth/responsive and it's much easier to get a fast picture of a specter in 1-2 seconds.

That's good, I've heard 2 is shorter too which is nice. 5 overstayed it's welcome a lot with all the backtracking

>Move a few rooms, come back that way a few minutes later
>The doll is on the other side of the room
fuck right off
>>
>>735109876
Revisiting the Osaka house after going through the Kurosawa house was annoying. I once had six ghosts spawn in the same room seconds after one another. I just started running past them at a certain point, it was like playing a JRPG with an obscenely high encounter rate.

is there any reason to fight the villagers that roam outside?
>>
>>735068852
I really don't like the combat of the original. It's fucking boring waiting for the red ring. I preferred the first game where you just have to keep it trained on the ghost while the bar fills up
>>
>>735055531
I will play this game, grace part is the best part of RE9
>>
>>735112049
Hope you enjoy it. Combat takes a little while to click, they made the camera features more granular than previous entries on this one.
>>
>>735111921
You don't even wait in OG2, you're free to reposition however you want so long as you're in the right place with your camera up. I agree wholeheartedly in that the first one's charge systems facilitated tension much better, you had to commit to your general orientation.
>>
>>735111725
Yeah, I thought the house would be filled with ghosts, only to find only that kid and two revenants, and when I thought there wouldn't be more and was about to leave I got jumpscared by a bitch during a door opening
>>
>>735112346
I probably played it wrong to an extent, but some ghosts where a pain in the ass. Like the fucking twins the first time that tend to hide in the walls or the mob villagers that spread out so you can't really focus one because the others will get to you, especially that faggot with the staff
>>
The combat is much better than in the original which was too easy and too simple. FF5 still has the best combat though, shame about everything else.
>>
>>735113760
I think this remake is onto something in terms of both the player capacities and AI tactics, but then radiant comes in like a goddamn wrecking ball and ruins the balance. It's too damn good.
>>
>>735113760
>>735114289
After I got the radiant filter, combat is going back to how it was in the other fatal frames so it's much more enjoyable now.
>>
>>735113760
>>735114289
I actually gimp myself by only using the standard filter and upgrading only that, feels much more balanced and I also like the reload speed. And also pictures look much nicer without the color filtering.

Yep, it's framing time.

Just started playing 4 remaster and holy shit did they improved the camera in later games? I play with mouse and despite supposedly being the fastest the camera is so slow, it's like it's glitching cause it is unable to reproduce how fast the mouse moves

Cope. I've played Fatal Frame on just about every console it's been released on. People can have standards. But by all means continue being a tool.

In terms of atmosphere, levels, story, overall design, it's very faithful. Probably one of the most faithful remakes when compared to stuff like RE2, SH2. The combat is where it is most different, so that's where your mileage will vary, but in my opinion it's a more fun system now. There's also some new/expanded side content that may have been somewhat present in the original game but here it's given fully structured/tracked quests. I do still love the PS2 version for the visual style of the era and this remake does not replace it, but it is a really good Fatal Frame game.

It only affects the village, the repentance is what happens when the hellish abyss isn't satisfied with a crimson sacrifice. Why the villagers don't just move, I don't think it's ever mentioned. Same with Himuro mansion.

why don't they just wait until it's bright out?

So what the everloving fuck was Chitose's sidequest? Whoever designed that shit should be fired. Why would they have you runback Tachibana house IMMEDIATELY after you finish it, but with worse blue ghost guidance and shittier darkness fights?
>>
I still don't get why they did what they did to 5
>all the girls are whores
>put in some ikemen vs. Ikemen shit
>retroactively fuck the stories of earlier games in the series
>do some weird as fuck mission structure
I'm going to finish the port of 4 before playing this, the girls are way hotter in that anyway
>>
>>735054104
why did they not remake Fatal Frame 1... you know... the only GOOD one???
>>

I don't know. I mean wtf, they already remade II as Project Zero on the Wii. This is the second remake of Fatal Frame II.
>>
meh ill just go back to the wii version, plus i can plug it into a CRT and experience the way it was meant to be played

Should I have enjoyed running back the mansion I just spent an hour in literally 10 seconds after finally leaving it?
>>
>>735124719
Its a remix of the original Chitose quest, they cut the Chitose quest in half and made the other half an optional quest. In the original you chase her and check for every closet first in Tachibana house and then Kiryu house.
>>
>>735126283
I feel like here they contextualized it as poorly as you possibly could. They introduce it right after you finally get to leave Tachibana, and it's like "eh, I just finished this but also I'm already here". It played like a tedious extension of a section I was content with.
>>
So why do people think 1 is the best?
>>
Dunno if anyone has noticed or not, but there is a Team Ninja style NG+ even on story difficulty the encounter rate/enrage rate goes through the fucking roof and shit is really hard even with upgrades.
