I think what helped is the median age of people in gaming are way older now and they have enough money to have all the consoles and a PC so there's no motivated reasoning anymore since as an adult you can just play whatever you want whereever you want. i simply dont give a fuck about owning physical copies for its own sake. as is, i have access to the vast majority of nintendo titles i owned physically when growing up on the NSO except the oracles games. and honestly, the last ten years shows that paywalls make for good gatekeepers (not just video game but in general) so i dont mind paying $80 for a new title. ill concede that open world slop is shitty though.
