why is there no competition to Discord despite all the dramas like them collecting and then leaking users personal data or forcing age verification
>>
Because no client is a proper drop-in replacement.
Cinny goes far enough but doesn't have screen sharing with or without audio, or a built-in GIF picker.
Steam never tried.

>Cinny goes far enough but doesn't have screen sharing with or without audio
>he doesnt know
>>
>>735069664
steam did try, they failed miserably.
reminder that before they tried to discordify their chat, we still had p2p voice calling which allowed people to get your IP just by starting a voice call, you didnt even have to answer it.

The userbase are mindbroken goyim.
>>
>app perfectly fulfills the role of a private messaging app, group chat, and community platform for 99% of people - offering free text, voice and video chat that also happens to be very easy to use and manage
>app has not made any critical mistakes yet that would force people to migrate (mandatory age verification for all accounts will probably be the trigger for this)
>most people don't give a shit about optimiztion or idealogical bullshit like >>735069879

Most people are bind broken goyim. Just look at the democratic part.

Cinny is a dogshit option. It's federated and without fenced design. Same as how >>735069861 points out with old Steam p2p voice chat revealing your IP, Cinny allows people to just maliciously distribute image files. There's already been cases of people using it to dump CP onto other people and then try to get them raided after. Happened on shitposter.club that I'm aware of and if it's happened once it's happening elsewhere.
>>
>>735070654
Discord confirmed prior to the intended rollout of the age verification and subsequent pushing back of it's implementation that all of your messages in every context are being sifted through by an LLM that's implicitly using your text for it's own improvement but also to "automatically" determine your age based on context of your chats. Presumably if you ever talk about fortnite or roblox it grades you as under 18 but if you talk about taxes or politics, you're over 18. If you think this is okay you're a fucking spastic.
>>
>age verification is bad!
Ok pedo
>>
>>735069596
Same as with any other social networking app - outside of some absolutely catastrophic mismanagement, the only real reason that would make people migrate from one service to another is their friends already being on that new service. In other words - a critical mass of users needs to happen on a competitor.
>>
>>735071035
Does it? It didn't seem to mind all my loli.
>>
>>735071160
People just don't want to send their ID or let Discord film their face.
>>
In other news people still use YouTube
>>
>>735071035
To the layperson, as long as an arbitrary front-end user cannot access their chat logs, it's private. They don't know or care about what can be done on the back-end by administrators - most will probably not even think about the ramifications of that until it directly comes to bite them in the ass.

Hello mossad
>>
>>735071119
Twitter did the same stint with estimating users basing on their post activity and nobody batted an eyelid. It's in full effect if you connect from Europe. I have two accounts, the public one I have is seen as "adult" and can view porn, while my private one I usually use, but don't post on, demands photo verification for adult material until I use a VPN.
>>
>>735071160
I have no problem with age verification. There's countries in Europe that have this shit figured out; your government ID can be used for this purpose but it's also obfuscated from the middlemen/end companies seeking confirmation, they just get a hashed confirmation that you're of legal age. Discord leaks data almost as often as fucking Sony; why should you ever want to hand them any legal documentation that could be used to fuck with you? If they want to verify my age they can do it without also gathering data that they're not only going to leak but also probably sell to some data aggregator for a one thousandth of a cent.

Better yet, just fucking ban children off the internet. There's no good reason for them to be on it, period. They're obnoxious as shit to run into in online games, they get groomed by perverts in Discord/Minecraft/Fortnite/Roblox and are generally a detriment to the internet as a whole. Stop offloading your unwanted and unloved shitheel children onto the the internet at large because you're an absentee parent. Take some responsibility and raise your kid, cunts.

>>735069664
there have been competitors the entire time, newfags.
people are just waiting to see if the verification gets forced on them.
>>
>>735069596
Who will fund such a start Up? The only way to succeed is
>shit loads of money
>planning to get bought eventually
Both would transfer money from rich to poor, not happening. Why do you think was the thanos girl punished with a huge sentence? Don't scam rich people.
>>
>>735069596
>why is there no competition to Discord
the problem is a platform like discord isn't valuable (to users) till other users are on it, which creates a chicken and egg situation.
there's 10+ apps positioning themselves as a replacement right now but none are quite there yet, but this surge in interest might cause them to get their ass in gear.
once some of them are parity everyone will either collectively decide on the new one or stick to discord despite it being shit.

there is precedent for an entire user-base leaving a site (digg -> reddit or every 1st gen social media to 2nd gen socials like myspace to facebook, or facebook to insta)

so we just have to wait and see what happens, there's not really any technical limitation stopping a competitor existing.
>>
>>735071221
People still use Facebook and Xwitter

>>735071160
my phone company got hacked 3(?) years ago and I had to go get a new drivers license and sign up to a bunch of identity theft services to monitor new credit cards being created in my name and shit.
I dont want a bunch of companies to arbitrarily have my ID on file for hackers to take.
>>
>>735071160
>muh think of the children
Fuck you and every retarded parent out there for making our society into some surveilance shithole just because you can't be bothered to parent your kids. Bet you'd let the government install a dildo in your ass too if it was for the safety of children.
>>
>Finally decided to delete my Discord account this morning
It feels great. I won't miss anyone or anything. I'm free
>>
>>735071519
Australian, or is this happening in other countries also?
>>
>>735071602
you got it, Optus are cunts
I dunno why they even had my license on file, I thought that violated the privacy act.
>>
>>735069596
Economy of scale. Competitors wouldn't be able to afford the image limits discord has though that is quickly becoming redundant when discord censors everything you choose to post on it.
>>
>>735071519
how people are able to create credit cards under your name with just your phone company data
>>
>>735071782
Welcome to modern telecomms and businesses in general. They can retain your data for all manner of purposes and then when they leak it they get to just go "uwu sowwy I did a fucky wucky hope your identity doesn't get stolen so people can sell points off your license to cunts speeding all across the country". There's proven cases of other people in Aus who years later are still fighting tooth and nail because they get dozens or even hundreds of incidents involving their identities being stolen off the back of this shit.

I worked for a crypto startup back during the craze and I had to close a guys account because a scammer had set it up in his name, We got to talking and he'd been dealing with people making accounts on every service imaginable in his name for years.
during signup all we could do was verify the license was real or not, not who was using it. unfortunately last I knew so there's no mechanism to fix this once it's happened to someone.

>>735069596
The infrastructure doesn't exist.
Discord has had a decade of building, scaling and optimising their infrastructure to be reliable for constant chat messages, forums, VOIP, video streaming and a public bot API.

Even if you could somehow produce a platform that brought Discord server chat history into the new server, saved all data so that it was essentially as seamless as opening a new app. You're going to fail because the infrastructure isn't going to be enough. You're not going to have enough money nor get enough funding to compete.

Business wise for a few years you'll be needing more money than you technically need, because you won't have optimised your infrastructure. It takes a matured live environment for you to start squeezing everything so that money isn't wasted. Which good luck finding investors for because this is something you'll need to explain to them.
>>
>>735072479
All you can do is go to Main Roads and cancel your license but in a lot of cases because their license is lodged against an outstanding fraudulent fine elected in their name, they refuse to cancel the license until it's resolved and by the time you convince the courts of your innocence, another 10 people have lodged more fines in your name. When Optus and other telecomms leaked people's driver's licenses, entire facebook groups dedicated to selling off driver nominations for fines abused that leaked data. In at least one case I know of, they had hundreds of fucking fines in their name from every single state, even on days when they were demonstrably proven to not be even in that state. (A fine from WA when the owner was in Tasmania for example.)

100% this age verification shit requiring government ID is going to have people's lives be ruined. We've already rolled it out for criminal history checks, which I hate because I'm looking for work. If that database gets leaked I'll likely be entirely fucked because that's got my driver's license, passport and medicare ID on it. That's enough data for anyone to go out and make all manner of mischief in my name, like you point out with the guy having people making bank accounts under his identity.
>>
>>735071160
If you don't age verify you can only talk to kids
