Why is it that video games have no real staying power? A game is played for a month to a couple of years and then disappears from the collective consciousness, while something like chess has a lot of staying power?
Games like league of legends are more complex than chess, so don’t bring up complexity as an argument.

Chess has cultural appeal. People feel smart when they play it.
>>
Nothing has staying power with the Internet
>>
>>735077956
Chess's enduring appeal is in its high skill ceiling. You can play for your whole life and you'll never ever be better than a chess engine, so there's never a shortage of competition. Combine this with the fact that it's almost perfectly balanced, and players will stick with it.

Video games like this also get played forever. Starcraft Brood War hasn't had a patch in like 25 years and still has great balance, and the skill ceiling is practically infinite.
In fact patches are likely part of the problem, games that receive balance patches forever end up inevitably getting ruined by the developers. Whereas chess can never be ruined by a bad update.

What a pseud thing to say

I just understand people. People play chess for the same reason they watch Oscar nominations.

The MOBA known as Starcraft is a solved game. Bring up a real RTS like Total Annihilation, built for men with chest hair.
>>
What the fuck are you talking about, people still play games from the 80's & 90's all the time

Nice bait thread OP. But yeah, nobody on Earth plays any retro games at all. Good call.

real racist patricians enjoy FIA/IMSA GT racing

This thread is retarded.

I'm watching AoE2, a 26 year-old RTS, being played at a high level for an audience of tens of thousands of people right now.

Literal definition of Posers and trend chasers.
They all decided to collectively play chess like sheep because its what trendy now.
>>
>>735077956
>collective consciousness
There's not that many games that are part of that. I'd love to play go but it isn't part of the western consciousness. Vidya are even less in the collective, with few exceptions like Pong, Pac-Man or Tetris.

wrong
rally involves no racecraft, it's skillful but ultimately just a time trial. rally racers who try to make it in pack racing disciplines always get bodied hard.
endurance racing is the pinnacle of motorsport.

Charlie whips out a strategy he learned from his tutor that was basically, “this is useless in 99.99% of scenarios and is essentially a troll move, because your opponent will assuredly see what you’re doing and counter it immediately unless he’s an absolutely retard.” Even the judges vocalize this.
XCQ proceeds to then demonstrate what an absolute retard he is by falling for the trick, because he’s too focused on whatever the fuck he’s trying to set up.
Game ends right away.

that's how games were always played since the nintendo days.

It's called a Scholar's Mate, a checkmate that can be done in a minimum of 4 moves, and is slightly more reliable than the basically complicit actions necessary by the opponent for the fastest checkmate.

Maybe he had a tutor or some shit like the other anon said, but it's a simple move that one can figure out just by imagining the board for enough time. I personally discovered it on my own while taking a shit in between games in middleschool, then proceeded to use it on my amateur adult teacher opponent who had just recently learned the game and laughed like crazy when it worked.

OP is just just some faggot's bot/fleshbot hired jeet, intentionally spamming the board with twittershit, however. The retarded twitternigger threads always stay up because the bots/jeets keep them bumped.

Companies don't give a shit about staying power.
The game needs to either sell a bajillion dollar the first week or it's declared a flop and all the people that worked on it will be laid off.

Nobody in that production chain gives a single fuck about making it memorable.

Because it’s the oldest game that isn’t shit you idiot. It’s like asking why no book in the past thousand years has the staying power of Bible. Chess isn’t even good anymore because every move has been studied to death and given some name by professional chess player. The fact that chess variations with different pieces are not more popular is proof that the only appeal it has is the fact that everyone knows about it, you can play it with old people and it has high skill ceiling.

League of Legends is more popular than chess.
>>
>>735084160
league of legends is more popular than pretty much every hobby.
>>
because video games are designed to be curated and guided experiences rather than simply games that are played by people.. notice how chess doesnt have a story or cutscenes or level design or anything. i know thats kind of a funny thing to point out, but what im trying to say is that there is a difference between a game and "a game with a lot of other stuff in it".

the only games that really have staying power are the ones designed primarily as games to be played over and over rather than trying to be guided experiences or adventures...i think generally the longest lasting games are ones like solitaire, minesweeper, and also some inherently multiplayer ones. games that are designed to be multiplayer from the start often end up feeling more like actual games, which explains the popularity of esports
>>
>>735077956

>Why is it that video games have no real staying power?
Video games are a luxury product. If you compare that to a wooden checkered board and a few wooden pieces, you're starting from the wrong premise altogether. You're also comparing a whole medium to a single game.
Chess is just FOTM because another movie or TV show made a character who plays chess look cool or some influencer started playing because they collabed with another influencer whose job is to play games.
>>
>>735085081
>doesnt have a story
It does, two armies fighting each other

It does, it has an 8×8 grid game field

Pretty much. Chess is a midwit thing people play to appear intelligent. All the truly smart people that play it are in agony when they do.
>>
>>735085987

Being able to redeploy captured pieces significantly increases game complexity. It's not just 1:1 moonrune chess. Not to mention the promotion paths for individual pieces.
