Sun and Moon was the only season I had fun watching with my nephew.The original season has charm but Ash being such a loser is a drag, and the rest of the show is generic as fuck and impossible to absorb.

A lot of the core art direction philosophies were lost since the original artist left after gen 2. Comparing gen 1/2 designs to later gens you can see how the original designs were made to look more believably like animals where applicable. Starting with gen 3 the designs went more for cartoony cute mascots and cool looking fantasy monsters. Possibly also in part to the games starting to adopt a look closer to the anime artstyle.
