What does /v/ think about using a trackball instead of a mouse for gaming? Can you actually get mouse level precision out of these things?Do they really allow for longer gaming sessions?
>>735087220Sounds dumb
hipster device
>>735087220I have one of these. They're nice for chilling in bed but you're never going to get to regular mouse level precision in FPS.I don't think that in this particular model you'll get more longevity. In fact, without a wrist rest, the ball puts your wrist at a slightly uncomfortable incline. You might get more longevity out of a thumball style mouse, but again, not going to get FPS level precision out of it.They're fine for most other things though.
I grew up using one of these and had to adjust to using a normal mouse later in life. There's some good players who use them, check out Zerggy, it's definitely doable and has noticeable ergonomic benefits, but I like my current mouse regardless.
>>735087220ive used one basically all my life, i cant imagine picking up and moving a mouse around, i can go infinitely in any direction faster than any non trackball mouse. same precision. the only real downside is it gets dirty a lot faster and it is noticeable when it gets gunked up.
>>735087220I bought one and used it for a while but I can't play any of the games I normally play with it, so it sits on the corner of my desk collecting dust now. It's fine for browsing and I can use it to the same effectiveness when browsing but swapping between the two is just inconvenient. Maybe when I'm too old to even play games I can swap to trackball full time
>>735087220just turn your dpi up
>>735087220Someone should make a mouse with a ThinkPad nipple on it.
>Can you actually get mouse level precision out of these things?no>Do they really allow for longer gaming sessions?no
>>735087220There was a TF2 comp player way back when who used a trackball and was so good at it that I actually got one. I never got used to it. Forget the guy's name but apparently you can make it work.
>>735087220I have a thumbball for my laptop and I love it. I don't think thumbballs would work too well for games, but maybe fingerballs could work?
>>735087220I used to use a thumb one for private server wow and it worked fine. I never used a finger one though. Would never play a shooter with it
>>735087220Haha anon like to play with balls!
>>735087891If you’re having wrist issues that are cutting your gaming sessions short you should be doing the opposite.Trying to do fine adjustments with your wrist for hours on end is what causes the strain. Meanwhile you can use your arm all day long no problems
>>735087220Been using one for close to a decade now. I had really bad carpal tunnel/RSI partway through college and switching from a mouse to a trackball was the only thing that fixed it. I know there's people that are more precise at me at FPS, but I don't want to fuck my wrists up, and if it's good enough for fucking around in Quake, it's good enough for me.
>>735087220I saw someone use one a while ago and land literally everything in a shooting game. So clearly you can get very high precision, but I imagine it's gonna take a lot of training because I don't even have good precision with mouse and I've used one for a very long time.
I play marvel rivals with that mouse lol
>>735087220Some guy did a longwinded youtube video on this, comparing it against normal FPS mice.they can theoretically be as good as a recent mice, but require so much maintenance to maintain consistency of movement that they are nowhere near worth the effort.
I think a mouse will always be better, and I struggle to imagine anybody coming up with a superior input device, but I think trackballs and trackpads (like on the Steam Deck/Controller) can get close enough for most people if you value comfort more than precision.
>>735087220Are trackballs any use for particular games? Any applications? I didn't find mine very useful for helping with art production. I just got it out of curiosity for like 8 bucks from a thrift store. It was 35ish on amazon so a nice penny saved.
>>735088131couldn't you just buy a keyboard with the nip on it?
>>735087220why the dick is it wireless? that makes zero sense since you won't be moving it around
