Find a flaw.
>>
>>735088035
one of the weaker igavanias for sure
>>
Color palette is ugly as shit, good thing there's a romhack specifically to fix that. Otherwise, the 2 castle system is a nice twist for the plot but is mostly unremarkable and introduces some tedium.
HoD is still a great game people underrate heavily.

>>
the music is horrible and i don't think it's as pleasant to look at as CoM
>>
>>735088035
practically the entire game is a flaw
>>
>>735088035
The whip ruins the appeal of finding new weapons and creates a bad hybrid of the first one and Symphony.
>>
>>735088035
One of my top 10 favorite games of all time. I love the soundtrack but I listen to some classical music and alot of underground black metal so my ears aren't normal.
>>
Dracula being a giant skull with a claw coming out of an eye socket is fucking stupid
>>
>>735088035
MC looks shitty compared to the other two GBAvanias and it takes a while to get good.
>>
>>735088035
The music is earbleedingly fucking awful. The game is unappealing to look at and the amount of backtracking is absurd.

Weakest of the handheld IGAvanias but still good enough game
Playing this Maxim story mode romhack right now for an interesting revisit. It's pretty fun and different so far
>>
>>735093706
Knife+wind fun
Too bad no book. I remember book and ice to make the two gears were broken as hell
>>
Clock Tower music sucks ass
>>
>>735088035
The castle was ass to navigate and the sound chip ruined a lot of the games music.
I respect Juste as a Belmont, even if he didn't get to fight the real Dracula.

Menu-ing the subweapons was a pain and most of them felt too samey anyways
Leveling was all fucked up and you grew too strong too quickly, making the subweapon system feel pointless in the end
Castle design and areas were just unmemorable and felt like there were too many areas where it was just one hallway with the same enemy copy pasted everywhere

Lydie was sexo though

Stupid map layout designed to waste your time
Directionless, excessive backtracking

You mean the books?
down+R+L toggled them on and off while up+R or L let you switch them on the fly.
>>
>>735088035
The A/B castle is really tedious to 100%, so much backtracking. Game's too easy. The powerups are mostly pretty boring relative to most other Igavanias. It's definitely the weakest of the gba trilogy but I still like it a lot and especially loved it as a kid.

Is it one of the gay anime lite-rpg castlevania’s? If so, then that.

People shit on the music, but early Konami GBA games were weird in that they used the original DMG hardware the GBA had for back compat with old Gameboy games for driving the main melody of the music, while the percussion was sample based and played back on the CPU like most GBA games. It worked for short loops of songs like in their yu-gi-oh games, but it's not a fit for Castlevania.

We know HoD is on the bottom but how would you rank the GBA/DS era Castlevanias?
>>
>>735099228
Dawn with patches > Aria > Portrait > power gap > Ecclesia > COTM > Harmony
>>
>everyone shits on Harmony because of the bad sound quality even though the themes are cool
>no one shits on Circle that took the safe and lazy path by having only two original themes and the rest being just remixes
>>
>>735100553
>>735100305
CotM was good though
>>
>>735100553
Even if the instruments were alright, hod’s music at best sounds like random notes. Its fucking awful. Juste’s theme, the theme that hod apologists all tout literally just sounds like random noodling.
>>
>>735088035
The visuals hurt my eyes. That's honestly all I can think of. They're not all on the same level, but the GBAvanias are all really good.
>>
>>735088256
Huh, first time I've heard of that hack and the game does look much better with it. Good to know.
>>
>>735088035
Fast travel rooms and castle swap rooms are too spread out so there is excessive backtracking.
>>
>>735102292

>>
>>735094360
Something funny about how they made this game to show what the Belmonts are doing outside of Dracula's resurrections just to throw Juste into his castle and involve Dracula's body parts in the story
>>
Started replaying CotM and holy moly I forgot how tedious this game gets. While double-tap to run is fine in a vacuum, I see why people complain about it in this game considering the zig-zag layout of all the levels. Exploring even single rooms means having to alternate running left and right a ton, so you're just constantly double-tapping just to get around. This would've easily been fixed if changing direction carried the running state into the new direction. This is how it works in Kirby and those games' movement flows really well even with double-tap to run.
>>
>>735102429
>random notes
>the soundtrack is full of counterpoint, in which every note is carefully selected to be balanced with others around it
>>
>>735100553
They picked some really good remixes though. It's the only game to give some love to SC4 beyond just Simon's Theme, and SC4 has arguably the best soundtrack in the series. Also it has a super high quality soundfont for GBA standards. That bass sample is incredibly fucking crisp and really defines the score for me. Awake is still one of the best "first level" themes in the franchise too. I don't like CotM but that's certainly not because of its music.
>>

It sounds like dogshit. Explain to me how we went from this on a primitive handheld

difference in writing style. not everyone can appreciate hod's eclectic mix of musical genres and the abrasive quality of the soundchip, but if you can, it's great music. totally unique as well.

shit music
>>
>>735099228
Ecclesia > Portrait > Dawn > COTM > Aria > Harmony
In addition to this I would also rank Symphony over all of them except Ecclesia, imo people enormously overstate the degree to which the GBA/DS games improve upon various aspects of it (especially Aria, which I would argue is the most overrated game in the franchise)
>>
>>735088035
Several bosses can be stunlocked by normal whip attacks.
>>
>>735104810
Different composers, also that's a cover a famous CV song. Most of Legends' soundtrack is unmemorable slop.

that shit always bothered me

I didn't know about holding the whip button to prolong the hitbox until years later but even playing the game as a kid mashing B still was enough to beat half the bosses without taking damage

It's just overwhelmingly unremarkable in just about all regards, from areas to bosses to exploration to gameplay to music to graphics

BUT

Maxim Mode is the best Alt Character NG+ mode of the Igavanias by far, on account of how ridiculously broken he is while still being fun to control

It's very flawed, so much so that the bonus mode is way more fun to play.
>>
>>735088035
While the boss battles are fun the bosses themselves are really forgettable for the most part.
I mean I rememeber all the bosses in CotM and Aria, but HoD has a lot of literally who's.
>>
>>735088035
-Bad music/art direction/level design.
-Uninspired gameplay.
-Shounen anime.
-Atrocious animation

None of the GBA/DS castlevania games are worth playing.

It makes sense that the game is piss easy because Juste is canonically overpowered because of magic
>>
This game is legitimately great and probably the best of the metroidvanias. I think people just let their preconceived notions about the game cloud their judgement. The music is the best of all of the gba games, probably the DS ones too. Graphics are super great, art direction is super great. Some of the coolest and weirdest areas in the series. It reminds me of a 2d kings field.
>>
Backtracking is a major aspect to what sets metroidvanias apart from traditional action platformers. It what connects them spiritually to wizardry. So when you compare this game to portrait of ruin or order of ecclesia, this game is so superior because you actually get to revisit areas and have to learn your way around the map whereas those games are basically just classic style castlevanias but with 10x worse level design. Hod is more like resident evil 1, where you unlock new shortcuts and abilities to traverse the same hallways over and over. By the end of the game the castle in both its forms feels like a real place you’ve been to.
>>
flaw? Easy. Kojima's art style is responsible for the gayest looking character designs in the entire series which ultimately killed the gothic horror aesthetic the franchise was previously known for and it's never fully come back since then.

That's the flaw.
>>
>>735088035
I want to have sex with the men Ayami Kojima draws.
>>
>>735118521
But when you compare it to the other metroidvanias
>>
>>735088035
It's not circle of the BASED
>>
>>735088035
Useless game that requires no skill. Only CoM is decent on GBA and then the DS games are at least more charming.
>>
>>735119952
It’s the best aside maybe symphony, no joke.
>>
The main character is gay. Why the fuck would I play this?
>>

I wish the game taught you about swapping books with up or down+L or R, whichever one it is, because it makes shit way more fluid.

Because the level design is awful and made worse by the poorly implemented 2 castle mechanic which doesn't let you teleport until the late game. Not to mention that a ton of the progression is just gated behind like 3 different keys instead of fun or interesting new abilities. It's a shame too because I actually think Juste is really fun to control

I think I misrembered it. Thought it was specifically to do a game showing what the hell the Belmonts are doing, closest I can find is this.

>IGA: Also, I wanted to tell a story where the castle is revived. Dracula can only be resurrected once every 100 years—and the story has to be crafted within that constraint—so I asked myself, if our hero is fighting something now, what is he fighting? If the timing isn’t right for Dracula to be revived, then what is there…? Then I had the idea, that each human being has two hearts, and what about a castle that reflected those two sides… In my head, a “castle” is a symbol of power. To put it another way, one isn’t strong because he has a castle—rather, a castle is something possessed by the strong. I wanted to give that symbol of power a concrete form—to make it material—and those ideas set the stage for Harmony of Dissonance.
