It's not really a bad mechanic. It's a mechanic RPGs inherited from cRPGs, where stats instead of real-time actions dictated combat. It just needed a better visual representation, that's it.

That's technically an exploit, since opportunity attacks aren't modeled in Morrowind. You should stand still and fight like a man.

I do really love Morrowind's combat system, and I'm sad it doesn't exist outside of ES3 and Neverwinter Nights.
