If you havent moved your king or rook(s), you can basically swap their places (meeting in the middle of the left or right path).
>why does it exist
Because everyone did it manually (moving both pieces individually until the position was achieved) to 1. keep the king safe in one of the corners 2. bring the rook to the middle and hopefully, to action

>en passant
If the first move of a pawn (2 squares) land him directly next to an enemy's pawn, they can "capture" you diagonally.
>why does it exist
In order to not be able to skip a "pawn battle" by passing by the enemy's side.
