It's great if you get an early shop. Biggest secret is you don't actually have to fight elites, and you can get a really good skeleton of a starter deck with 400 gold.
Also every class has some form of exhaust or discard you want to click on every run anyway, like Regant's Charge or Minion Block, Necrobinder's Seance, or anything that says "discard" in Silent.

The reason for that is simple, you often don't need to play your full hand in fights. If the enemy isn't attacking you'll often play one power or attack and not play your blocks, so this turns into free energy
It becomes significantly better once you have even one energy card such as bloodletting or turbo or anything of the sort. then you'll convert one of the extra energy from that card into +2 energy for every turn after

Regent is great if you get the star package but shitty otherwise since forge is fucked and you fizzle out if you don't draw the key cards that allow you to deal damage or block like Particle Wall, Stardust, Radiate, Reflect, etc.
Feels like the problem with this character is that it has a ton of awfully bad cards but the good cards are very good at least.

Forge currently has its use, but you shouldn't be taking more than 1 to 3 forge cards, and they have to do useful shit other than forging when you play them. Forging when the sword isn't in your hand is just terrible value, the ideal package is like Bulwark, Summon Forth and if you end up relying on the sword a lot /maybe/ a Seeking Edge if you need aoe or Conqueror or something just to kill a boss. Wrought in War is great early act 1 but falls off a cliff.
And if that's all you put in your deck it's decent.

Yeah but you don't always get Comet, Gamma Blast or the other better cards so The Smith can be a "good enough" card until you can get the better cards. It's not a bad card to play if you don't have better cards to play on your turn too since you sometimes can do silly shit with it but yeah, forge in general just really needs a buff to make it worth playing or not make you die horribly in higher ascensions since the monsters will just murder you while you're busy trying to ramp up your sword.

demon form is kinda bad because there's no big strength synergies on ironclad any more, particularly Reaper which let him regain the health he lost playing it. You can take it if you desperately need scaling to kill a boss but it's usually pretty rough

Finally won with a Forge deck on A6 but it was very close and it's half a stars deck too. Queen is definitely the hardest Act 3 boss right now since it has a gimmick you actually have to respect while the other two allow you to go crazy with damage. Radiate and Beat into Shape is a great combo.

Dog is actually kind of threatening on a10 when you have less resources to work with. Phase one is nob and it can be hard to pull out the 113 damage to kill phase one without it scaling too high and smacking you, and phase 3 has 5x burn attack that can mess up small decks pretty bad. Phase 2 usually isn't bad but sometimes you pick up a wound or two into phase 3.
I'd say it's probably still below queen but noticeably harder than doormaker who actually does nothing.

I've finished A10 by spamming colourless stuff.
If you find Arsenal it's a free win, otherwise you will have to work for it.
It's still pretty good though since a lot of the cards you get are on average better than your normal cards.
Otherwise any strength card/relic/potion is pretty good on him since you can get big 6+ radiances with low effort.

I had played a decent amount of STS, and I don't think I've ever gotten a true infinite (maybe I had on watcher), and I've stumbled into two in a row now (necrobinder, ironclad). In both games I have absolutely nothing but terrible builds/runs with him and I'm lucky to make it to the Act 2 boss. I've cleared Act 3 ONCE with him in the first game.

At least in 2 I can play with friends to carry my ass while I pretend I have any kind of survivability. It's like I either do a Strength-focused build and get my ass kicked since I'm attacking too much to try and kill things, or I do a Block-focused build and I get my ass kicked because I'm just sitting here playing defense while the enemy gets stronger. And those are his only two playstyles unless you're a sadist who wants to run an Exhaust build, which is just garbage.

At least all the other characters have fun gimmicks that make the run interesting, but the Ironclad is just a piece of shit imo who feels really, really bad compared to everyone else.

It seems like high cost cards are the way to deal with him, but the issue with this is that you're still going to take like 21 damage every turn if you can't kill him in 2 turns. He's just overtuned. I think he'd be a better balanced fight if he debuffed you on the second turn rather than the first.

Pillage and Expect a Fight are two of his strongest cards that you can commonly see. both of them reward having more attack cards than than skill or power.
To utilize this, take a lot of attack cards, remove basic defend, add fat block like Blood wall, Flame barrier, Impervious. only pick skill card that you're sure you really need.
From here, you can go Exhaust infinite, Hellraiser or Cascade bullshit, whatever you can get your hand on. That's the new way to play Ironclad in StS2.

You can play him like he was in StS1 as well. Pyre, Unmovable, Stampede, Demon Form, a bunch of blocks and some multihit attacks. (literally the style that your first run of this game gave you). Your card rewards before you visit your first shop usually decide which direction the game want you to go.

I skip most cards, I always try to keep my deck as close to 20 as possible unless I'm playing a deck with a ton of draw like with Silent.

Really depends on my starting relic and the pathing. I always take cards that are block/strike but better to immediately improve my deck in act 1, afterwards it comes down to how my deck is looking and whether or not the rare card from act 1 boss gave me a win condition to build around

The environments being dungeons is technically a low value factor if going by the Berlin interpretation. So long there's procedural environment generation, it's turn based, there's permadeath and there's no metaprogression it gets closer and closer to being more in spirit with the original Rogue. The game being grid based is bonus points, I guess.
Like, modern indies tend to just take the procedural generation and permadeath parts, while otherwise doing whatever they like. Metaprogression often being the main thing that gets people invested longterm.

Sure, but I imagine the main points old roguelike enjoyes would get hung up on is that you don't have more freeform exploration, and that there's metaprogression. To me, for a true roguelike the game already needs to have everything available from the word go, without needing to unlock things through separate runs.
