It's a matter of scale, 1 byte would be less than a picogram on a 1TB drive, but the type of harddrive matters too, modern harddrives don't even use magnetic platters always they sometimes have glass and lasers instead which would probably actually weigh nothing.

Also does it actually weigh anything or is the extra magnetic energy in the platter just pulling the scale closer?

Data does have weight, electrons have mass even if it's extremely small.
The sum total of all data has objective weight, there are already physics experiments that proved this.
Also the release of heat energy is measurable and the reduction of entropy can be reasoned that a bunch of 0s in a row has less entropy than the mix of 1 and 0 that we use to represent data.

If I take paint and put it on a canvas does the resulting picture have more mass than the virgin canvas and unused paint did prior? No. You dumb faggot. I can paint a tree, a person, anything that you would recognize, and this "information" does not add anything to the universe, the mass remains the same.
The physical process of the read head switching a bit on a hard drive platter can alter the platter itself, but what is recorded to it is meaningless. Filling a hard drive with pure 1s is more meaningful than a hard drive full of movies encoded as both 1s and 0s. Data. Does. Not. Exist. This isn't a debate, Rakesh, its a foundational principle of the universe.

>I get insanely good grades doing mine about vidya because I just riff on about "niche" games no sane normie has heard of like Space Funeral
>This goes on throughout my degree. Always try to branch out to other things but keep getting pulled back to vidya because lecturers see my potential
>Final thesis project coming up, people get to decide what their project is and work under a third party project lead
>Lecturers knew I didn't want to graduate as the game guy but couldn't decide on a project to give me so gave me 5 bite sized ones
>Thesis project is split between 2 segments, a planning segment and a final delivery. Each takes 3 months and ends with a presentation at the end of the 3rd month
>Get cracking on my projects. 2 people organizing their ends of the projects pulled out instantly, 2 were so early in the idea process they didn't actually have anything for me to do, and 1 gave me a project that I completed in 2 hours because it was easy
>Tell lecturers, they don't care
>Planning segment presentation comes up and I get a fat 0% because the lecturers "felt like I didn't know what I was supposed to be doing"
>Brings me after class to a room and says they're gonna make up some game project to give me instead, I say whatever
>Everyone is getting their final deliveries ready, meanwhile I'm basically back at square 1. Despite that, I work hard every single day, pumping in hours to get it all done
>Hand in final delivery and presentation. Lecturers love it and give me top marks
>Pulls me aside and says by the way, because you got 0% on the planning you'll need to redo it and also the highest grade you can get from that is 50% which you'll need to pass
>Spend last month of my degree life working harder than ever to get it done. Basically did the same project twice. Lecturers like it. I pass and graduate

>he forgot about rotational velocidensity
Lossy files degrade over time, making the drive lighter in the process. Those .mp3s might be more dense now but after a few years they'll have lost their density advantage compared to .flacs.
>>
>>735134575
So you replace them with newer .mp3s. I suggest keeping a single copy of .flak around to keep making denser copies from

Data does exist, but not as matter or energy. It exists as physically instantiated structure, patterns in matter that can influence outcomes. Is layered on top by interpreters, but the underlying information is still objectively there.
>>
let's be real: data is FUCKING MAGIC
>>
>>735127342
You realize data isn’t stored on HDD platters in the form of extra electrons floating around, right? HDD platters encode data via patterns of magnetic particles. One arrangement of dust does not weigh more or less than another arrangement of dust. There is exactly as much “information mass” in the string 00000000 as 01100110.
>>
>>735127342
>>735127416
Whether or not data has weight depends on the media it is stored. Static data storage like a mechanical switchboard objectively does not possess mass as it's expressed entirely through flipping components around, while something like a water-based storage system obviously does give mass to its data as it intakes liquid to represent bits.
Hard drives are the latter where they store data through an additive process, so the electrons that *represent* the data have weight, but said data can theoretically be expressed using a non-additive system and whatever was used to read the media would come up with the same result.
>>
>>735136301
>One arrangement of dust does not weigh more or less than another arrangement of dust
*makes one arrangement move at the speed of light*
gg
>>
>>735136372
>Static data storage like a mechanical switchboard
But that's how a hard drive works. the "switches" are tiny magnetic particles that have their polarity flipped one way or another by the write head to encode one bit or the other.
>>
>>735136301
If we're talking about magnetic storage medium then sure.

For SSD, on the other hand, data does have weight.
>>
>>735136490
