It's just a really common archetype because it humanizes a character that would otherwise just be a remorseless killing machine. It also adds depth to the character, by characterizing them based on what they're protecting and why. Authors use tropes for the same reason mathematicians use calculators; they're effective.

Sekiro doesn't really qualify as a gruff old man.
More of a weathered young man.

How does Nine Sols compare to Hollow Knight and Silksong in terms of difficulty? Both games kicked my ass, but I still manage to beat the bosses. What I'm really worried about is the runbacks
And also, are there any missable items or bosses? That's another thing I didn't like about Silksong

Nine sols is more of an action rpg parry slop than metroidvania, hollow knight is more traditional metroidvania
>>
Why didn't sols just captured Yi (like Jiequan did) instead of killing him
>>
>>735132434
His name is Okami you piece of shit.

Nine Sols is not nearly as hard as Silksong. The worst it gets is a major difficulty spike at the final boss, but some people have expressed pains at every boss so it's up to you to find out what boss doesn't gel with you.
There's no runbacks. Respawn points are basically always one screen transition away from the boss, the worst maybe being a boss that's next to an elevator that you can speed up by remembering to reset the elevator each time you use it.
Nothing is missable on a single save. There's a point of no return right at the very end of the game that is heavily telegraphed, and will auto-load you before that point once you beat the final boss. You also can choose any ending you want once you meet the requirements for either of them.

And like >>735132879 said, it's not much of a Metroidvania. You can go to some locations early, but movement upgrades and bosses are locked behind story progression. You can also only beat 2 bosses out of order in the begining, and 2 more in the end.

Okami is his title >:O
>>
>>735132739
It's easier than silksong, and shorter than hollow knight.
The final boss is a major difficulty step up because you can't just cheese or outstat it, you have to learn the patterns and parries.

How is 9sols? I wasn't really interested in it at first, but I keep hearing good things about it.
Also I thought it was a furry game, are there human characters or is that just a fan design?
>>735132093
I agree; he's just been through a lot in his life.

>How is 9sols?
Solid Mostly-linear action game. Doesn't have the same type of parry depth as Sekiro, but makes up for it by having some good bosses and a solid story
>are there human characters or is that just a fan design?
there are multiple human characters, but only two get speaking roles. The story eventually reveals the cat people you play as pass their knowledge onto humans and form society as we know it.

It's fun, even though I hate parry system in games because of my reaction speed. It have really cool music and art direction.
Gameplay is 2d action rpg with light metroidvania elements. Apemen (some ancient four fingered proto humans) are mainly npc and quest givers, main character have cute apeman little brother/son Shuanshuan and drinking buddy Shennong
