Lack of cohesion between the art team and the writers.
It happened in many game, especially recently.
One example would be Mass Effect Andromeda, visually good, dogshit writing.

XIII trilogy is still a FAR superior Final Fantasy experience than any of the slop Squeernix has pushed out since then.

Funny how this foliage not only looks better than FF7 Rebirth's, but ALL of the recent games.

Because it's green.
When's the last time you saw a rich green for foliage?
For me it was KDC2 which incidentally has some really nice looking plantlife.

I'm so tired of seeing posts like "omg how did this game come out in (insert year here)", do people think people in the past didn't know how to make things look good? I see the same shit applied to animation, can't wait to see posts like "omg how does this movie made in 2020 look so good"
>>
>>735133501
>do people think people in the past didn't know how to make things look good?
They don't.

Remember:
kids born in 2007 are now 18 years old. They were born surrounded by slop like Minecraft, Fortnite, and now the Unreal 5 slop that requires Ryzen 9x3D + RTX 5080 to run at 1080p 60fps, native, all while having all sorts of bloom + blur + noise artifacts.

In general, younger folks of any era have hard time swallowing the idea that some things might've been honestly BETTER before their time. Nobody wants to live in the end of Roman Empire times, but be the gold-standard pinnacle.
>>
>>735133501
It's because we still use past graphics advancement as the standard like the jump from the PS1 through PS3
but game graphics obviously aren't advancing that rapidly anymore so it's a surprise when a 10+ year old game looks so good.
Like MGS5 is 10 years old but MGS1 was 10 years old when 4 came out

The point isn't that they're impressed by older games' visuals (though they are) but that the standards have been intentionally degraded so that games look worse despite being less performant on stronger hardware with larger budgets. They're trying to push standards back up.

>>
>>735136297
The problem with prerendered backgrounds is they're made for specific resolutions, and not very futureproof. Even with static camera angles, a modern game should have fully 3D environments to avoid it looking super janky like Square or Capcom games of the PSX era.
>>735136626
Cocoon was a really awesome movie with Wilford Brimley.
>>
>>735137259
Just play in the native resolution?
>>
>>735136693
>when FF lost all of its relevancy.
That was FF15. FF13 was a Star Wars prequel situation where everybody thought "Okay, maybe they can rebound on the next one. We can forgive them this time", but then FF15 killed all interest. It's actually an incredible achievement to burn out goodwill in a series like Final Fantasy.
>>
Hope won...
>>
>>735137415
>Okay, maybe they can rebound on the next one. We can forgive them this time

Really? My thoughts were: if this is the type of game Square Enix is making these days then they're not making games for me.
As a life-long final fantasy fan until that point, I swore to never play another Final Fantasy game again and never did.
Can't say it is objectively the worst game I've ever played, because the graphical fidelity is impressive and the setting is interesting (it's the story, characters and gameplay which are the problems), but it is my least favourite game of all time and I imagine always shall be.
Horrible, horrible game.

I don't understand why the writers felt compelled to write a plot about a self-righteous terrorist destroying a fantastical city. There's already been several games where that was a plot point.
>>
>>735137597
Art direction wise it was still kino. Still incredible looking at the time and still to this day 17 years later.
>>
>>735137551
Everybody thought FF13 was bad, but there was enough goodwill banked to hope they could redeem themselves. Little did people know that Square Peenix are spearheaded by out of touch waterhead boomer nips who think changing the beloved formula into DMCslop is what all the kids want (despite Persona selling millions with each release and keeping to the turn based formula).
>>
>>735137659
They actually force themselves to save said fantastical city despite their Gods ordering them to destroy it.
>>
I just got the 4GB patch and installed FF13-2. Wish me luck.
Finished 13 recently and it was okay. Didn't do the final half dozen C'ieth missions because the grind was mind numbing and it didn't open any new combat options anyway.
Surprised it was a way harder game than usual for FF. Some bosses defeated me here and there.
Also the crafting system is needlessly convoluted. Maybe to pad play time since the game ir more or less linear, despite having a somewhat long main campaign.
It's kind trivial with guides, yes, but the grind of Gil and buying stuff is still excessive.
>>
>>735137317
The native resolution will still be scaled on any non-CRT monitor.
>just use a CRT
No thanks. Modern games don't need prerendered backgrounds anymore. They were a crutch to show more detail than was possible in the 90s.

Nah, It really isn't as bad as people say.
Not my favorite or anything, but seriously over-HATED.

I personally picked it up for dirt cheap in the early 2010s, despite having heard all sorts of shit about it.
The BEGINNING really didn't even try to prove all the bad claims about it wrong, but luckily, to my own surprise as well, the more I played, the more entertaining and hooking it became. It's not GOTYAY or best JRPG ever in any sense, but it's FAR from the "worst crap ever" -category. A solid 7/10 experience IMO.

The sequels fixed, expanded and improved many things, especially pacing and gameplay. Up to you whether you like the direction they went with the plot and cast, but they're not hideous either. FF13-2 was simply fun, easily 8/10 at least, and made the OG feel like a tutorial and "chapter 1" of something bigger. However, LR I found to be an absolute BLAST, and easily my 2014's GOTY.

Because it practically IS.
No, it's not even the size of a moon. It's literally smaller than the Tokyo city curled into a ball. You can legit SEE the other regions of the Cocoon in its skybox in some of the clearer regions.

The Cocoon tribes literally were building a hugeass Machina arm to GRAB the floating ball and drag it down.

>>735138086
Rock solid 30fps at all times.
Easy 60fps on an Intel i7-2600 + GTX 1050ti.
>>
>>735140181
It was supposed to be the ultimate JRPG tto define the PS3 era with countless others to follow (like what FF7 did). It flopped hard and it was trash. It literally killed FF. The hate is deserved imo.
>>
>>735140924
>It flopped hard and it was trash.
Why are you lying on the internet?
FF13 was literally the best selling game in the franchise at the time. The only reasons /v/ "hated" it was simply because it didn't follow the Open-World meme trend that Bethesda has started, which in hindsight was just sad.

Sure, 13 had a lot of wasted potential, most likely caused by the game being changed from a PS3 exclusive into a multiplat, resulting shittons of content cuts and streamlining to even fit the thing on those 4 HD DVDs on the Xbox. From I can remember, what now is the end of the first game was merely meant to be the first chapter out of three.
>>
>>735141216
The first game is really long, though. Even with the long corridors meme, you take quite a while to finish it. There are a lot of cutscenes.
13 was made in a time when it was somehow still acceptable to interrupt the gameplay even seconds after the last cutscene.

2D hand drawn skyboxes > low res volumetric cloud sim
Same as it ever was. Volumetric clouds have their uses, obviously. Flight games, fog and so on, but if you're never going to go near them 2D sprites + some particle effects look way better. Current hardware isn't powerful enough to render detailed terrain and high res volumetrics, so when devs need to hit framerate targets volumetric clouds are the first thing to be cut back. How often are you gonna be looking at the sky anyway?
Somehow the question of whether the game needs volumetric clouds in the first place never gets asked.
