Why do MMOs feel like a bigger waste of time than other video games?
>>
]They don't have an ending.
>>
>>735132775
Because they're designed to be exactly that?
Although, there's a fair number of single player games that you can waste thousands of hours in, so, hmmm...
You should just stop playing video games altogether, desu.
>>
>>735132775
Because they're designed around bilking the actual no-shit mentally ill of sub fees. Have been since Everquest.
>>
Because like >>735132836 said, there isnt a real "completion" goal. Take the current iteration of WoW TBC. Everyone knows based on the roadmap that this xpac will last about 11 months. All of your gear and progress will be lost and reset at that time as we move into Lich king for the 3rd time. Yet people still spend 10 hours a day grinding to get money to buy gear and consumables to try and clear solved content in record time. In the same 10 hour gaming session that you play in WoW or any other MMO you could realistically beat a lot of older games and some newer ones too.

You grind to get "better" gear which is just a number going up by a small amount. And then an expansion comes out and you repeat that process, constantly chasing that high, while also competing with other addicts for those items. EVERYTHING is designed to waste as much of your time as possible.

How did the French manage to make the best MMORPG of 2026?
>>
>>735133450
kill yourself
>>
Because they're LITERALLY designed to waste your time to an insane level so that you're forced to play the game for days, weeks and months to get anywhere. Slow as fuck leveling combined with level gating, horrible levels of mind numbing grind and like other people pointed out - it's all without purpose. You just grind levels to watch numbers go up and the futher you go, the longer it takes.
>>
>>735132775
Because they are grindy. Did you really need a whole thread to be told this obvious fact?
>>
>>735132775
I think it's interesting how a single-player rpg/rpg-like pays attention to things like pacing, it's kind of bad design if it tells you to kill 50 slimes in a row- it's an option but you also get by with the 5 slimes that you find walking the dungeon, then the next area has enemies that give more exp. I was playing Extra CCC and you get story segments or dungeon gimmicks. That is one way to do it. It really is designed with a beginning and an end in mind.
Well, MMOs are basically that. But really gacha are pretty bad too. It's infinite grinding with a social hub that is supposed to represent a second life or something.

dead genre.
only people still actively playing them are sunk cost fallacy retards
>>
For me its the failure of the initial promise.
A online, persistent, world, where nearly every character is another person. Where you are not the hero but on adventurer of many living in this big fantastical world.
Anything should be possible, but then no one really knows what to do with it, everything becomes tailored toward the end game grind devaluing 99% of the world which is left to rot, player count drops, the only people interested the fantasy of the world are erotic roleplay degenerates, game enters caretaker mode and finally exists off a few dozen grandpas using it as a messenger service to chat with other grandpas they befriended in 1999-2005.

Then Josh Strife Hayes makes a video and a bunch of people sign up and boost the numbers for a week before they realize how shit it is and leave again.

MMO rpgs are, not to mention their gatekept by no lifers.
MMOFPS on the other hand...
>>
>>735132775
They're gachas from a time before gachas. This encapsulates most of the arguments mentioned in this thread, like the lack of an ending or "final" goal to work towards. Many such games try to disguise the tedium via the social aspect, but that tends to work more for Asians than anyone else.
>>
>>735132775
because WoW and its clones are, the only mmo that saves ur progress and doesnt reset is osrs, all other mmos are designed to make it so what you grind doesnt matter after a year
>>
>>735136734
There's true, but it's barely even an MMO. Most people play it completely singleplayer
>>
>>735132775
If you think MMORPGs are a waste of time, you should try fighting games and see what a TRUE waste of time is.

They shifted to a seasonal approach so gear is no longer meaningful and resets after a few months. That used to not be the case, you could grab an item and have it be good for years in EQ, early WoW, and FFXI. Chasing gear became retarded when it's going to be replaced the moment the next tier dropped, meanwhile your Onslaught Girdle from Molten Core was still being used into Naxx and you had Neltharion''s Tear and Rejuv Gem still being used into TBC for a while. In FFXI you had Rajas Ring be BiS for 8 years.

>"Your goal is to collect BiS or all the cosmetics"
>Game has nothing to do if you perform said goals
