Finally got around to playing this cause it just dawned on me that every arcade is PC based these days and TeknoParrot exists.
It's dogshit.
I knew nothing is ever gonna top House of the Dead 2 but I was atleast hoping it could be HotD3 level. Playing this made me realize why Sega ever thought releasing some shit like the HotD1 and HotD2 "remasters" was at all acceptable. It looks fucking awful. There's basically no alternate routes. The feeling of shooting is horrible because they insisted on spamming 40 zombies on screen at a time, even though only 1 can attack you at any point, so as a consequence none of them have any cool dismemberment or damage effects like they did in older HotD games and hitting them anywhere but the head feels like not hitting them at all. Chariot and the Hanged Man looked pretty cool but then there's only 2 new bosses, one of which is boring as hell and the other looks cool but literally plays itself.
I also don't understand why they never bothered to release a PC port. It would take like 5 minutes of actual work, it's literally already running on a Windows 10 PC in the arcades

Unless you are playing with a light gun or something that operates like one a light gun game is gonna suck. There's a VR mod for HotD1 Remake that looks alright, be nice if they ported all the HotD games like that.

Idk, I enjoy the rest of the games just fine on a mouse. Playing with a controller does suck though, but I've only ever tried playing HotD3 that way cause I happened to have it on the og xbox.
I will agree that I don't understand why VR becoming relatively widespread didn't lead to a rail shooter renaissance or atleast some kind of emulator thing that would let you use a light gun virtually to emulate older rail shooters. Instead we prefer to shove a whole camera inside of a plastic gun and sell it for $200 only for it to kinda suck compared to just a normal light gun

I mean it loses alot without the cabinet going apeshit around with with lights and vibrations and your gun having different feedback depending on what your shooting.

Its fine its a great arcade spectacle for sure but there are areas where the performance tanks to an unreasonable degree and im pretty sure it drops hit registration during those times.

"House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn uses state of the art Unreal Engine 4 game architecture" while showing this shit on screen is hilarious. It honestly looks worse than 3 even.

Yeah I get that, but in my mind I'm only comparing it to the PC versions of the other games, which I think is fair. I'm not pointing out things that are clearly limitations of playing an arcade game on a standard PC, like the audio mix being fucking garbage so that you cannot hear what the characters are saying

That's not the reason. modular damage systems like in HotD 1,2,3 take passion and hard work to make.
they stopped doing that after 3 and I'm pretty sure it was pure laziness. A shame what Sega's become.
They literally innovated the most robust gore/damage system in all of video games and basically defined the zombie genre in video games.
then just dropped the ball so hard.

I read up on this after posting this thread and apparently they actually had a damage system ready for Scarlet Dawn and even showed it off at some event but it was dropped from the final game due to censorship. Which honestly is even more bullshit

interesting. I'd be so pissed off if I was one of the programmers or artists who did all that work on the gore layers system for nothing.
I wander if there's any surviving footage.

Yeah, you can read up on it on the wiki. To be honest it still looks like shit compared to the older games, but there was something atleast.
