I dont mean in the sense that the hardware/software of some video games is outdated, im talking as if thats a complete non-issue, what i mean is say, youre playing a game from 5, 10, 15 and so on years ago, and it just doesnt "feel" right to be playing it "now" somehow the games feel like they need to have been played through only on their release window/their era, and engaging with them beyond this point somehow feels "wrong" in a way. is this too schizo? i mean im probably just some dumbass zoomer whose coping about missing out on/getting spoilers for so many video games of the 6th and 7th game console generations, which is what i grew up with.

I'm guessing you straight up never engage with any works of art over 50 years old.

a lot of multiplayer games are like this

not true, i dont feel this way about any other piece of media, i can easily watch early 1900s movies, tv shows, medieval art, etc. but video games specifically theres something about them that makes me feel this way, cant explain it, its this intangible intuition i feel, something is telling me that video games have a kind of "self life" that they must be engaged with immediately before they pass onto irrelevance i dont know why i feel this way but i do.

Unless you want to engage other people who play the said game, it doesn't really matter. I can enjoy a game from 90s and from today in equal measure. It's true that some games haven't aged well and can be hard to approach now, but that mostly has to do with standards and expectations around the medium. Roughness and simplicity of older titles can be charming in its own way, but it's all a matter of taste.

You explained it in the most schizo way possible, but the point makes sense. It's especially easy to tell when a video game came out since they rely heavily on new technology including graphical support. If you want to know why Super Mario Bros doesn't look like New Super Mario Bros, it's mostly because one came out 20 years later. Still, the important part is whether the game is any fun, and there's definitely plenty of older games that are more fun than recent ones.

You can feel the same about any media. Lots of classic books won't feel the same when read by a current day person compared to reading it back then. It is why a lot of people think some classics are overrated as they don't realize they just aren't the reader it was meant for.

You're onto something but I don't know if I should tell you, it's fun to discover on your own and such.

No man those games are literally dogshit and only existed because of unchecked marketing and extremely ignorant comsumerism. It's like not "getting" mcdonalds because you aren't bombarded with 50 commercials a day telling you to eat a big mac
