This game is cool as hell. So many shmups around this time period had innovative control schemes.

oh nice. i see it's the same devs as Gunbird, guessing it's mostly similar with some gimmick or another. I might check it out. I need a few more shmups to play every now and then

You can throw out the dragon your riding. This functions similiary to a stance character in a fighting game, where you have a seperate moveset depending whether or not you're on the dragon. On the dragon you're fast and have powerful subshots, off the dragon you have slow focused movement and a weak main shot. The dragon launch deals massive damage and causes enemies to explode into coins, and it can continue shooting once launched and held in position. This gets really interesting because the dragon can collect coins, so you're incentivized to pop an enemy, recall the dragon, pop another enemy, leave the dragon out to collect the coins, and sweep back and collect the initial coin drop while dismounted. Since this is a psyiko game it's highly advantageous to be very aggressive and make big sweeping macrododges, so there's a risk/reward aspect from entering the slow mountless stance. There's also a magic mechanic, where you have two seperate special attacks based on your stance, (some characters are better suited for using magic, Ian is the fastest character and has weak magic, but he does incredibly high damage at close range due to having the shortest dragon retraction time) and the bombs behave uniquely for each character as well.

I wouldn't buy psyiko games honestly, the ports are kind of bad. Just emulate it.

The scoring system triggers my OCD. I can't stand shmups that I can't collect 100% of the medals/coins. That's why the auto collecting mechanic found in Mushi, MMP, SDOJ, Progear and Kaikan is so satisfying. I don't apply this rule to Garegga and Dimahoo, only because these games encourage you to collect specific items.

Trying to do this is feveron gave me a massive headache and made me drop the game for the time being. I was full chaining discomen on stages 1 and 2 when I realized there's a multiplier for doing it that compounds at the end of the stage that resulted in a score of over a million points. (for reference, the lowest scoring ALL clear on restart syndrome is 550k, so I was nearly doubling that in a mere 2 stages) However, if you miss a single Discoman you lose hundreds of thousands of points, which was incredibly frustrating, especially with how fast and loose collection is versus like DOJ chaining or something. YGW scoring is just flat out annoying, you have to do endless gymnastics to keep medals from spawning in an impenetrable cloud of bullets, and mushi is an insanely poorly thought out game where the 2nd loop reqs discourage you from scoring the first loop, which I guess was fixed in 1.01 but I can't play that. So in this way I guess I like games that either have strict route chaining like ikaruga or doj, or less punishing scoring, like this game or gunbird 2 or ketsui, or a combination of both like rayforce.
