The technology was just not there yet for the constant closeups and in-your-face 3D graphics that the console was doing. The PS1 had a better approach towards the era, often utilizing pre-rendered backgrounds, cgi or anime cutscenes, and otherwise using 3D in ways to try and hide the imperfections of the medium at the time. While N64 in general really tried to push something that wasn't yet there, so its games will forever have that extremely rough feel to them, like being permanently stuck in a Tekken 1 cutscene. The decision to use cartridges certainly had an influence on making all 3D all the time more necessary because of the lack of storage.

Also, Nintendo relied heavily on first party games, whereas Sony relied almost entirely on third party games. With third party you have an entire array of devs with different approaches to 3D, a lot of them also working on Arcades and having a lot of experience with 3D graphics, so the scene was advancing very rapidly on the PS1. While Nintendo basically had to figure out 3D on their own, in-house, and have it carry the console.
>>
N64 screwed itself over with having extremely small texture buffers. it can only handle 4kb at a time. ps1 had 2kb but it could work around it by seeking the copybacking the ram from disc. n64 had no such copyback feature.

The parkinson's textures make every 3D PS1 game look like garbage making the N64 win by default

>"Hindsight tells me this 3D is bad!"
People of the time were amazed by 3D even of N64's caliber. Evidence: Goldeneye sold pretty well and was held in very high regard. If all you knew was Super Mario World, of course polygon graphics were going to be novel and impressive.

No they weren't, dumb zoomer. Arcades had 3D graphics leagues above the shitty N64 visuals since the early 90s. Nobody was "amazed" with it, people just accepted that this ugly shit was the best thing you can have at home. Just like nobody was impressed with the shitty Gameboy graphics since Super Nintendo and Genesis already existed, but it was the best thing you can have on the go.

That's the Saturn version, which isn't regarded very well by anyone. Although it's still fun like all Sega games. Here's another close up model from another Sega game, this time the arcade hardware matches the home hardware.

The facial animation is really cool for 1996. Detailed and lively.

are you mongoloid? rare carried N64 and their games at the time shits on present gaystation. you faggots don't know what gameplay is, it's just moviegame after moviegame.

I grew up in a small town with almost no arcades (there were machines here and there in various businesses, but often old ones, and the cabinets were never the main attraction.). Having 3D games available at home that don't take a quarter for every life was indeed an extremely exciting development.
>>
>>735159901
>rare carried N64 and their games at the time
Agreed.
>shits on present gaystation
Utterly insane statement. Brits are only good for racers and Rare was barely making them, and were massively outclassed. PS1's wealth of superior Japanese devs raped them harder than Argonaut's founder rapes Miyamotos daughter.

>>735159064
he's right though ps1 games were ugly as fuck
rich kids had a n64 playing kino like perfect dark and sm64 and inviting all their friends to play mario party or golden eye with 4 players while the poor kids were stuck with a shitty ps1 playing crash or ff7 if they were lucky or shovelware games found in a bargain bin if they weren't maybe occasionally playing with a second player using a gay looking barely working third party controller
>>
Nintendo won the 3D generation. None of those games are as relevant as OOT or Mario 64.

Goldeneye > Metal Gear Solid.

By making glorified SNES games. N64 broke the mold and made full 3D worlds which is why it was so highly praised. Mario 64 is a tech demonstration, and literally couldn't run on PS1 because of how weak it was. Goldeneye wasn't possible. OOT wasn't possible. All the most remembered games could ONLY run on N64 with carts.

I often try to do comparisons between my Playstation and N64, but my three Playstations never want to work, despite being well cared for. My N64s all work flawlessly.

So N64 wins graphically because it can still produce visuals.

gotta clean the tiny eye every year or so, or dust gets on it and if dust gets on it and then on anything else, the eye gets smeared every time you put a disc in and it NEVER works again

they used to sell a cleaning kit just for the PSX which was a disc that spun over the eye and brushed it and the carriage off just because of how fucking obnoxious that was even back in the 90s. so in 2026 it's likely fighting an inch-thick layer of dust between the carousel and diode.

What kind of zoomer history revisionism is this?
>>
N64 got most of the landmark games of the generation
PS1 had a lot of cult classics and hidden gems
Popularity was largely dependent on region
Console warring over machines that are older than you is gay as fuck. The real cool kids had a friend who owned the competing console so they had access to both libraries

he is right about one thing tho: even Resident Evil 2 had scrutiny from reviewers at the time because of prerendered backgrounds when the N64 advertised all 3D all the time for better or worse. Reviewers were merciless toward anyone making a 2D game at the time, Sony had a policy of rejecting 2D games for localization as did Nintendo. Symphony of the Night got thrashed for being a 2D sidescroller and games like Mischief Makers had reviewers screaming "Aaieeee 2D that's not graphically impressive oh my gooooood"

>who cares about reviews
Every investor and publisher, that's why these 2D games died out outside of handhelds in the 00s for a long time.
>>
If you don't like all three consoles you're a total fucking loser.
