I enjoyed Ever Oasis. A desert region in a game is only bland when the devs choose to make it that way. They don't have to just be real life deserts but converted to game formats. Sandblasted cliffs that hide treasure filled caves, oases that swap the yellow for nice contrasting stuff, giant temples and ruins, something that emerges hidden from under the sand, blue moonlight changing the yellows and golds for blue and green contrasts, etc.

To add your posts, there are plenty of cool settings you can work with deserts
It can be post-apocalyptic, it can set in somewhere in Middle East like Egypt, it can set in the Wild West or it can be set somewhere in other planets if you're into sci-fi
Deserts are surprisingly flexible as a setting

Also desert themes are cool and they often have a specific vibe

I love exploring deserts in games for some reason. I know they tend to just be big flat empty planes and dunes of sand, but I've always enjoyed exploring them. Games that slow you down or don't give you some form of mobility in them can go to hell however.

Deserts are literally the most untapped level design in the history of video games. Do you know what you can do with a desert if you design a whole game around it? everything. Egypt is one of the most historically well known cultures in literal history. Everything has happened there. It's also just one location in Africa, where there's ALSO the Sahara desert too.

>>735162246
No, but ice deserts seem to be because I can't think of a good one.
>>
Desert sucks in open world games (and some 3d games) since for them to feel like a desert they inherently need to have long stretches of fucking nothing but sand dunes.

They are fine for 2d levels since these kind of games just use the vast sand ocean as a backdrop while you traverse either a very lively part of the desert if not only its main interest point (temple, city, cave, pyramid, village, oasis, etc...)
>>
>>735162246
Yes.
You have to actually WORK to make them a good setting, because deserts are typically boring as fuck.
That is why whenever we want to say there is a severe lack of something fun or good we call it some variant of X Desert.
Like a Content Desert.

And because modern game devs can't even work on basic game development things such as optimization and memory-space efficiency, or character design, they certainly can't tackle the hardest setting to make fun.

It can be done. But not by the majority of game devs.

Act 2 is in a strange boat of having far and away the best ambience yet nearly the worst actual gameplay. Act 3 jungles are slightly more annoying to navigate but don't have the fucking scarabs.
I think Arcane sanctuary is a perfect example, one of the coolest designs of any level in a early 2000s game, with 3 fucking dead ends and bugged enemies that mixed up their "per second" damage with "per frame" and horrible drop rates. Act 2 is great to think about but shit to play.

OP doesn't even participate in the discussion or expresd his opinions or views or have any takes of his own, he NEEDS someone else to think for him.

I think the main issue people had was with early 3D games, when camera controls were either garbage or non-existent. This made the levels disorienting. Besides that, here are a few buzzwords usually found in water levels: claustrophobic, labyrynthian, stressful (oxygen) and scary.

Deserts are only an issue when they're giant empty shitholes that you require a level-exclusive mobility system to traverse. As such, something like Toastarena, or the MP4 bike desert blow ass.
Inclusion of a vehicle to traverse an environment is tacit admission that the level is inherently unfun to play through otherwise, and you need to alleviate it with a high speed method of transportation.

Tactics Ogre's endgame takes place in the Hanging Gardens, a sprawling series of mini-battles where your ability to get through it in a timely manner will depend on your ability to track down hidden doors across the battlefields, since there's tons of different routes to take through the labyrinthine gardens.

Of course, since the battlefields are all so high up, you could knock out enemies early with a well-timed crit to drop them into the abyss - but they can just as easily do that to you.
