i have probably over 30 000 hours of just listening to the language via anime, i can understand people alright but having a conversation is harder

Because I'm not ethnically Japanese and English is the lingua franca of the 21st century.

I'm trying, man.
In the middle of the unit it shoves a giant Kanji section in and I 100% forget the words on the unit I was supposed to learn.

Years of watching anime, and playing games, and that's all i learnt. I'm used to the sound of japanese though, even if i don't understand it.

Also, does anyone else try watching Chinese anime? The language sounds so different, i find it off putting, Like SHU, SHU SHU SHI, SHU,

it was the same for me. since i had so much passive understanding of japanese just from watching anime, i felt it would be way too much of a waste to not turn all of this unorganized knowledge, so to speak, into actual fluency. so i started doing anki, and it was a very smooth process, because seeing flash cards of words that i vaguely knew from anime spelled out directly in front of me together with its translation, it just completely solidified the meaning in my head. like out of the 1500 words in the kaishi 1.5k deck that i did, i was familiar with most of them
