Sony recently cut loose all their contractors on fairgame even though the games new director wanted to hire more for the final crunch before release as they dont have the staff to finish it on time. Horizon is also a certain car crash because it was a console bundle title, like wii sports lol no one actually paid money for it so it never actually sold a single copy.
>>
>>735643014
>(,,,)the game underneath the surface is a masterwork of design. There's a lot to love about Marathon- and the show aint over yet.
Look at this goddamn shill. This is why nobody trusts game journos. Bungie could personally come to their houses and leave burning bags of shit on their doorsteps and they'd write articles praising the grace with which the troon Bungie employee shat in the bag in the promotional video and how the aroma of the shit was on par with scented candles. 10/10, signing up for their poop delivery service!

Nah but he's exponential with that shit.

Horizon Hunter Gathering will be "954 hours passed" and he found it amazin. By those numbers, there will be a moment when he'll reach a video game getting EoS before he was supposed to find it amazing, or something.

Concord was an unexpected DOA catastrophe. Nobody expected Highguard to do anything but die, and it behaved as expected. And neither came from one of the oldest AAA studios in vidya.

Marathon basically flopped on its launch weekend, but it didn't bomb. What we're seeing now is the game wither and slowly die as it bleeds players. I just wonder where the tipping point is before the matchmaking system starts to break. 15k CCU? 10k? People are already reporting slowdowns in those 'remote regions' of the UK and Italy, and that's with the game struggling to keep its head above 45k.

It's more about some kind of bullshit tax thing where if you kill a product before it's available to consumers, you can call it 'R&D' that gives you better write offs or lets you allocate the money you spent somewhere else when it's financial reporting time. It's something corporations can do where they put all their losses in one department to make other departments look better.

>>
>>735656335
If it is true that cancelling allowed them to claim a tax write off then releasing it would have been a significantly bigger financial impact on them. Wouldn't have mattered either way for Creative Assembly since they weren't bankrolling it but the outcome of the majority of their bloated workforce getting yeeted when money dried up would have been the same. And they would have still been abusing their only cashcow, Total War Warhammer, regardless. The whole situation from start to finish including all the internal restructuring and strangling of other product lines in favour of trying to push out Hyenas should be a case study of retarded business behaviour.
>>
>>735656480
Sony could have made so many cozy games with the money they sunk into Marathon.
>>
>>735656604
But those couldn't have made the theoretically infinite money that GaaS can, so that isn't viable in their eyes. Only infinite forever money where the line goes ever upwards for eternity are to be considered for development. Surely the next one will land and make them unlimited money from the modern audience.

Funny thing is that it's still on some sales charts. It's just losing more people than it's gaining. It's still in it's "honeymoon phase" It hasn't dropped to whatever it's stable population is, and they're pulling out all the stops with cryo archive and the not an embargo, and rejiggering regions, fuck latency if there's no players to fill a game.

It could survive a 50 percent loss if it's peak was high to begin with, but it wasn't even highguard level.

Amazingly, it's still not clear whether highguard or this game is the bigger failure yet.
>>
>>735666690
Cryo archive already ended retard
If you want to actually shit on the game, keep up with the news. The compiler is a lame boss and the meta is just bubble shield, frag grenade, and wstr spam. Unless bungie changes up the meta and reduces team count per map, it will always be a clusterfuck.

While the other Concords were blockbusters, this one will be a spine tingling slow burn with Sony desperately throwing more money, marketing/shills and ecelebs at the problem.

It's most hilarious thing is retarded shills who barely play games calling it a "masterpiece of game design".

I wouldn't be surprised if they pull a "free to play" weekend like Battlefield did a few days ago, and if things are really dire, going full F2P. I wouldn't pay $40 for it in the first place, mostly because paying for live service games is a gamble (and asinine to say the least, I'm not paying $20 for cosmetics and currency on top of $40 game), but I'd be willing to try for free.
>>
>>735666808
There are Doom mods being released at this very moment thag easily beat it.
>>
>>735666739
Exactly. I'll slow it down for you anon.

Cryo archive didn't result in attracting more people to the game beyond it's initial run, or any viral effects.

I'm not sure if there's any changes to cryo archive that can stop the bleeding.

>>735666816
...and losing more players than whatever 27'th place is. But the point is noted. Honeymoon's ending.

>>735667016
Free weekend would only work if they think that they have hot shit that's attractive and people just need to see more of it. Like if they successfully added some hot shit that changes peoples opinions. But it's high profile with a huge ad campaign. I don't think it will work in it's current state.
>>
>>735667096
And I play those too, I especially like Samsara. Unfortunately, slaughter maps get boring after a while.
>>
>>735667148
The main problem is there's little variety in map and enemies. There's only like two events and they're on dire marsh, the worst fucking map and after playing through the standard three they get very samey since every shell wants to play the same way and shotty/sniper meta is supreme. Ranked added functionally nothing except getting rid of a few freekit shitters and Cryo is just a snoozefest until it becomes a killbox in the center.
Then there's the rubberbanding and stupid matchmaking issues. I really like the core game, but there isn't a lot of content overall and there's severe balance issues.

Lol. Lel. Lmao.

I don't know who the fuck Alenia Analytics is, but they can't do middle school math, they require an NDA to be signed for anybody who requests a demo of their "system" which is supposed to track sales analytics for game publishers (even though they get told this shit by the platforms themselves) and their founders are former investors who made their money doing... Investing? Their linked-ins are more barren than Marathon's servers so who the fuck knows.

Anyways, these turbokikes have the ears of many major game publishers, and help direct the perceived interests of the public by feeding completely bullshit sales figures to said publishers. This generates a false impression of what gamers want, and as such these leering homos should be politely tarred and festhered for their lying faggotry.

the logos aren't QR's, heck im 90% sure Arachne are supposed to be a copy of those demon symbols of old.

>this long stranded alien planet has functional infrastructure that all looks 3d printed last week
>everything is colored as if it's a large futuristic sporting event
I assumed it was supposed to look like mass produced plastics, which do last forever.

>even though the level of technology far exceeded that since 2015
they will still make sense even 100 years from now, QR codes are just a way to encode text efficiently with built in error correction/checksum shit, even the most advanced computer vision can easily read a QR rather than a plain text link.

>>every company logo looks like a qr code becuase... uh... it's satire!!!
No, there's QR codes because it's a future where everybody has cyber eyes or smart eyewear, so it's only logical that common objects and signals fit this. This is also why optica are not lens but cameras with a projected augmented reality image based on eye-screen alignment
>>this long stranded alien planet has functional infrastructure that all looks 3d printed last week
It doesn't look 3d printed last week, it's very much degraded. The atructures were also carried through space through Deimos hollow moon with the Marathon and mounted on the surface after landing, which is why they have signs and on how to attach various parts

You are retarded
>>
>>735681187
The colored prefab structures also stand out in the actual planet enviroment and help give the idea of humans being alien and not meant to be there, which ties with the anomaly and contagion part pf the narrative

In Marathon you can barely tell them apart which defeats the point of a logo. It's so satirical it misses the whole point.
>It basically was all 3d printed and why wouldn't it be functional, there are basically glownigger robots lurking around 24/7 now
From just the UESC, to the point where the other factions have to send player characters to protect or repair their assets. A Nucaloric facility does not have any meaningful maintenance. The game itself refers to this planet and its infrastructure as long abandoned.
>They funded the entire operation, why wouldn't all items have their logos everywhere?
That isn't the problem. The problem is every piece of infrastructure is painted full saturation like it's a McDonalds playground. It's not believable.

You don't get mm accuracy out of a QR code, environmental weathering affects detection, and a reminder the nonsensical markers in Marathon ARE NOT MEANT TO BE PARSED BY A HUMAN.

You're surrounded by visual indicators used by cameras and sensors all the time that you can't see because they're more accurate and don't get in the way. Eg.) A VR controller.

The choice is inferior and putting Ikea construction markers all over already constructed infrastructure for a colony made FOR humans is fundamentally retarded.

Mirror's Edge was solid because the art and lore existed in the same universe. Marathon is aping things from various art styles without any context.
>every human has cybernetic eyes
1.) These markings are meant for construction equipment and these things are already completed.
2.) the visible spectrum of light actually sucks for such purposes, see pic related, valve's scrapped VR prototype replaced with lasers instead.

I guess everything malfunctions the moment it turns to night because it's just no longer visible in that spectrum, makes sense, this is the technology of nearly 80 years in the future, im just too low IQ to get it :/

Can someone explain to me why is this bad?

I get it that balancing a multi-player game is not easy. Still, they just sold 1.2 millions of a multi-player game with a single mode, only four maps, containing mostly text and audio dialogues for its story. Surely a budget of a game like this must be orders of magnitude less than that of a CoD or a Battlefield
>>

I've been holding out on commenting about this topic until there was a measured analysis with actual data.

Before any doomposters, trolls, or armchair experts chime in: this comment is based on my personal experience working in marketing at Sony, traveling to their HQs in California and Japan, and general knowledge of case studies for comparison.

The simple fact is none of us know the true dynamic of the working relationship and strategic planning between Sony and Bungie, but Sony is no stranger to betting on dark horses - as long as the IP is strong. From Xperia phones, the controversial movie The Interview, 8K TVs, the PS3 era, & Sony's Spider-Man Universe, there's many examples of this across different divisions at the company over the years. They have activations at their Sony Showrooms that are very creative and cool, and yet still don’t make dollars & sense when it comes to a marketing budget.

Sony did not acquire Bungie for ~$3.6B for Marathon alone, but a long-term strategic play for Destiny 2, Marathon, most likely Destiny 3, and the strong IP that comes with all of that for merchandising, licensing, & adaptations. We also don't have an accurate report of Marathon's development cost.

Will Sony impart its will on Bungie to attract more players to the game? Yes. Will there be layoffs over time? Maybe. Will Marathon go the way of Concord or Highguard? No. The doomposters and trolls need to understand that both of those games were weak IPs that were DOA.

Marathon may be the game that extends Bungie’s burn rate until D3, or it may be the IP that is so creative and uncompromising in its vision that it refuses to be ignored. Remember how the Netflix animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the Phantom Liberty expansion revitalized interest in Cyberpunk 2077 years after release? The game that had a disastrous launch and could have tanked its developer CD Projekt Red (~$6B company).

i suspect when it (and any other live service from that push) was pitched to Sonys management in their mind it was next Fortnite/Roblox,
1 game they could milk for decade, next big thing or something like that.
Success at scale of helldivers 2 would be failure in their minds.
They bought Bungie because they wanted Desityny 3.
Now they have game that can be succesfull but it require lots of work and money on top of gigantic budget.
What should they do? go for destiny 3 or spend more money trying to save that shit without any guarantee that it will work.

Marathon was not an IP
The game is called Marathon because the developers love the lore of the first game they have made and wanted to follow up on Marathon 2 ending (very indicative the fact that Infinity is wisely retconned as that game did ruin the story), and the concept phase started when Bungie was still independent. Marathon exists because they wanted to make it. Sure as fuck it wasn't Sony that barged in to tell them to make a sci-fi brutal Halo: Prepare to Die Edition

From the chart you posted it looks like the game was on an overall positive trend from the start? Also Marathon has no new content for months. Bungie isn't an indie company. The same exact way they become the model of FPS story based live service, GTA from Rockstar became the model of open world online multi-player.

So the correct answer for your retard brain is no. You can't be a massive AAA company and operate with one game as your cashcow and it performs like a AA 15 dev studio.

They are all chasing the biggest fish and paying the price for it.
In 2013 Grand Theft Auto V made $1 billion in 3 days
in 2015 Fallout 4 made $750 million in 3 days
in 2018 Red Dead Redemption 2 made $725 million in sales in 3 days
We see comparable with Pokemon and Zelda titles as well, the shareholders and investors want those kinds of sales but have no idea how to replicate that shit and worse the developers are just saying whatever lies they need to get what they want made or to just fleece them as fast as they can. That's what's making these ridiculous outcomes where indie teams will never have to work another day in their life because their $20 title sold comparable or better numbers but the overhead just wasn't as intense as these bloated late stage cancer companies that can't run on small margins so you get flops that still clear 5 million.
