>>735695013i tried playing this one summer got bored with the grinding
>>735695013Sure. Where do you want to start? I played it from Summer 2022 to Spring 2023. I knew about it when it came out but was turned off by the graphic style and was fully into the 3D craze of 95-96.Anyways, I played it and loved it. Absolutely loved it. Humor was there. Music was there. Charm and graphics were there. Combat is simple but deep and not easy. You can't really just spam attacks like in FF. Items have to be rationed. It's a long game too. My complaints, like most, is the cumbersome text and waiting of the inventory system. Makes it a complete waste of time and pain in the ass to move stuff around, and I'd say a good couple percent of your playthrough is going to be eaten up by not being unable to skip through text you've seen a hundred times before. Also, the story sucks. I don't care since after a while I just cared about the gameplay and awesome locations you go to, and the story was just an excuse for that. Don't expect something like FF6.Overall I give it an 8.6/10. Absolute must play, and one of the best JRPGs out there.
>>735695490>determination (courage)Concepts are now patented schizo-kun?
>>735695013Isn't it weird how no one in the West gave a shit about this in the 1990s, and now people pretend it's a top five Super Nintendo game? I do wish I had bought every copy from the bargain bins back then though, who could have guessed in a couple decades people would proclaim it a masterpiece and be selling it on eBay for $300+ each?
>>735695013Everyone memes about Earthbound clones but what other media genuinely gives off the same feeling as it?
>>735696282Uh... try well over $5k SEALLED. Complete it goes for over $2k.

>>735699278The over arching story sucks. All the little individual ones are good. Gygas being some alien coming to destroy the world trope, and then friendship and melodies from shrines at the end defeating him? No great plot twist or reveal. Nothing about Ness's father potentially being Gygas which is where I thought the story was going. Just a letdown in cliches.

>>735699605classic
>>735699754How difficult? Haven't played in years
>>735700052That's a lot worse than I expected. Giygas played on peoples fear and selfishness, multiplying their negative emotions to control them. He himself acted out of fear and hatred. Ness went to the sanctuaries to understand himself, what made him feel happy and full of love, and overcame Giygas's evil with purity of heart and a desire for everyone to be alright. This is told through the lens of a coming of age, because young people can grow up feeling loved and cared for and put that back into the world as adults, or abused and fearful and repeat that cycle. The story is very, very simple, arguably to a fault, but you managed to somehow miss it entirely and, thinking you're smarter than you actually are, set up weird expectations that of course failed. Nothing suggested Ness's dad would be fucking giygas, lmao. Oh well.
>>735700292

>>735700052If Nesses dad was Giygass, how did he give you money?
>>735700052The series is called Mother for a reason, bro. It literally loses the will to fight in the first one after you sing his foster mum's lullaby to him. Then he goes off to a parallel dimension (probably) where he's defeated by kids who are very similar to the first universe's, with the power of friendship/connections that it never had. And in 3 the only thing it had left was an asshole abusive kid who tried to control it and it had to be put out of its misery.

>>735702381They added a lot of stuff to that romhack. some little things were adding names to the NPCs textboxes if they had them. I didn't even know the Runaway 5 had individual names like Lucky or Nice. Or that Poo's master's name was Full House
>>735702452Possibly. Haven't seen him in awhile. Maybe he got bored and moved onto another series that triggered his autism
beat Earthbound 4 times, once as a kid on SNES, twice on emulation and 1 time on SNES classic, didn't get the sword of kings as a kid, first time I emulated I grinded under Stonehenge until lvl 90 then gave up, second emulation playthrough I ignored it, then on SNES classic I got 2 just walking through the dungeon
>>735701368>>735699754Did it fix the balance then?I've been interested in it but hear, like a lot of game overhaul mods, it's just bullshit difficulty intended for autists because it was made by them.I'd just want to have a good time, not have to sleuth out the one and only strategy that cheeses the boss, otherwise they'll tear you apart
>>735702381Was a casino in Summers also in a novel or some other obscure piece of extended universe lore? I can't really tell with this romhack if it's totally original or based on some preexisting idea.

Can anyone help with this? >>735701587
I still have the cartridge and the strategy guide that it came with
>>735702869I haven't played 2.0, only 3.0. But from what I've seen the balance isn't totally retarded. It's definitely way more difficult than the base game, and grinding is kind of a necessity.Mainly because they lowered your stat growth and increased the stats of the enemies significantly. As you can see my Ness is level 62 and his defense is quite a bit lower than what it would be in vanilla. I haven't beaten the 5th sanctuary boss yet btw. I'd say the toughest parts by far are the optional boss fights. Those can be some real bullshit RNGfests.
>>735696150I wouldn’t say the story sucks but it’s not exactly breaking the mold plot wise. It’s a very basic Saturday morning version type of tale. Mother 3 has a way better story imho

>>735695013I don't like Earthbound as a whole very much, but there are elements of it I do like quite a lot. I love the many creative set pieces, scenarios, character designs, areas, and music. I know that a lot of people shit on it for its art style, but I love it. I also love its quirkiness. And I love the climax of the final battle. I also do like this quirky RPG "genre" it spawned. But it's just that the core gameplay loop sucks, and outside of this pleasant quirky quality and the climax the writing is just not good. All the characters are one-note and bland with no actual personality to speak of. The game is also too long. After playing for a while it just becomes a chore.

>>735733382Not an argument
>>735733797yeah it is
>>735733384Good to see someone else in these threads that played Touhou Mother. The first one had a few sucky moments but the plot was better, the second one had better gameplay but the plot was cheesier.
>>735733034https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEpP0ti8i1cToo lewd
The section where Paula gets kidnapped fucking sucks. Poo randomly leaving the party after not even bothering to show up for 60 percent of the game like ten minutes after joining also sucks. Taking away your party members in a game where the roster is so limited is anti fun. That and the incredibly limited inventory are pretty much my only two real criticisms of the game.
>>735733034The subject matter can feel... squeamish. Mainly because Young Love can shift to Young Romance which can in turn shift to Young Sex, even if only in the player's mind. Or even worse, poison the well of fan works involving such pairings. It's not pleasant having to deal with something like that on a newly made game. Shoot, there's relatively little Ness/Paula 'risque' works out there only because it's a semi-obscure 'cult' game from over thirty years ago.
MAYBE NOW YOU HAVE FIGURED IT OUTTHAT'S WHAT BEIN' A FRIEND IS ABOUT
>>735735116If anyone had to be kidnapped, it should've been Ness. You've still got good firepower, but suddenly you've lost your healer and would have to make use of healing items again.Besides, it's a little lame to have two Paula-kidnapped sections in the game. Just makes her come off as incompetent.
>>735735498How many games DID actually have a section where the 'Main' character was out of commission for a time and you had to make do with others? My knowledge of games is duck pond shallow, but I only know of two games that did this; Chrono Trigger and Jet Set Radio Future... and honestly, not sure you can truly count that second one.
>>735735116>he didn't appreciate the spooky mall>he didn't appreciate poo's returnit's a game that's all about moments, the kids it was designed for adored those moments.
>>735735692FF6 did that, depending if you want to count it or not.
One criticism of this game I don't really get (AVGN made a big deal out of it) is not being able to buy multiple items at once. Considering the fact that items don't stack and your inventory space is very limited, why would this matter? I can think of only a handful of times where I tried to stock up on healing items, and really it wasn't even that many. It's way easier to just heal yourself with PSI in most sections anyway

>>735735820The process of buying or selling items was turned into a comparatively slow slog. You selected the item you want, you chose who got it, then you got a confirmation check. If you could equip said item you also got a check to that effect, and maybe another one involving you selling the item it replaced. Rinse and repeat, if you were so inclined. By the looks of things, you missed most of the tedium this caused.
>>735696282I think pokemons massive success contributed to the idea of a contemporary RPG being a novel concept in the minds of a lot of people. Many won't consciously connect the dots but I feel if you've played pokemon before mother then theres this pleasant sense of familiarity, which makes sense given pokemon was essentially a spiritual successor to the franchise

>>735696282As >>735703287 mentions, more than half of Earthbound's resale was pic related: it was a comparatively enormous combination of both the SNES cartridge and the Player's Guide. This visually scared-off a number of buyers, but it also meant it was priced anywhere from $70-$90... which was at least twenty to forty dollars more expensive than a normal, new, full-priced Nintendo game.People didn't invest in that.To discover that "Earthbound" was, indeed, a praiseworthy Nintendo game took time (and clearance bins).
>>735736608no one said that

>>735737075>people really underestimate how vital emulation was for EarthboundOne of the other biggest "word-of-mouth" gossip surrounding "Earthbound" at the time was that the Player's Guide included "Scratch 'n' Sniff" cards (which were a popular gimmick/toy at the time) and was meant to help advertize.Unfortunately, all of the cards smelled very much the same, and smelled quite bad. It did not market itself well...

>>735700052>Nothing about Ness's father potentially being Gygas which is where I thought the story was going.>I played the game assuming that the end-game, Planet-killing, Galaxy-destroying monster "Giygas" was hinted as being Ness' Father.I... don't mean to make you feel bad, Anon, but wow. I think that's the first time I've ever heard someone make that kind of connection. Most everyone I discussed this game with operated under the guise that "Giygas was the end-of-the-universe threat" who was going to destroy everything and everyone since he's the ultimate-evil. Discovering his "twist" that you had to travel back in time to nearly the beginning of all life, to a time before Giygas even existed was the only way he was weak enough to be defeated but was ultimately discovered to be a lonely, if not mindless, pre-nascent infant and you're meant to feel pity for him. And, as for who Ness' Father was: he was your savepoint. That was his biggest role. He was a telephone. Call Dad = Save Game. Like for many kids, "Dad" was "always gone" (usually at work) and didn't come home until after bedtime or had to leave to go on company travels. You didn't see him much, but he was still supportive and tried to console you despite his absence.
>>735736140"starmen.net" was, unironically, one of the most famous early-Internet websites because of how well it was constructed (for its time) and how coincidentally referenced it was since it was supporting a Mother 3 translation and had access to NUMEROUS image and music files to download in its uploaded archive which people were THRILLED to have access to (in the late 90s).

>>735739682Pokemon is the only kind of game that I don't want to ever change its basic mechanics, what do you mean with "evolve"?The gameplay in Pokemon changes with the addition of new pokemon, new moves, new settings.I am also tired of hearing people complain about Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet when all the 3DS games were abysmal and still get praised. The only reason why the 3DS games get praise and the the Switch games get hate is because the people that hold that opinion grew up with the 3DS games. >>735748003the rhythm battle shit is known to be fucked though
>>735727558Because the frame of reference for developing a game like EarthBound is backwards - it was made as a parody of American life (at least, as seen through the eyes of a Japanese man) and JRPG power fantasies during the 90s.First off, we aren't in the 90s anymore, so the subversion of such a cultural base is impossible.Secondly, instead of trying to parody Japanese life through the eyes of an American or European, they still have a western focus entirely, so the feel is lost. The only thing that these games achieve is arguably the twist on JRPGs - that's it.
>>735748003all 3 games do something really well that keeps me coming back to them.1 has the best ost out of all of them overall and possibly has the best ost on the famicom period.2 has the best world exploration, world building, and ending.3 has the best story and characters. it was a great sendoff to mother as a whole with destroying the world and moving on to the next.

>>735774058Semantics but my point is the story is so simple it doesn't really give you much of anything to follow or care about, not that it literally does not have one at allIt just left a lot to be desired since I played Mother 1 first
>>735774439I don't really find its plot to be less sophisticated than Mother's, but that could just be emotional nostalgia on my part since I played Earthbound not only first but at a much younger age. Can you expand a bit on your point? Which plot points in Mother do you think elevates its story above Earthbound's?
>>735774794>I don't really find its plot to be less sophisticated than Mother'sHow? Mother gives you a prologue about George and Mary to start you off and give you some questions you want to know the answers to, and by the end you know exactly who they are and how they're related to what's happening and it explains the melodies, magicant, and who the final boss is and why he's here.In EB It's literally just "you're the chosen one, go stop the evil bad guy" and that's it. It doesn't pose any questions beyond "what's up with giygas this time," the game never explains what the melodies are, what's going on with the mani mani statue, why giygas is here now and why he's so obsessed with Ness specifically, anything really. The ending gives you some ties back to Mother and gives you a lot to think about but the game really just doesn't have anything close to a full blown story like 1 and 3 have. I guess the difference is "stop the evil bad guy" versus "here's why you gotta stop the evil bad guy and here's why he's bad"For the record I still like EB and I think the final battle is memorable as fuck and the practically nonexistent story aims to set you up for the subversion of "shit there's more going on here than everyone knows" feeling once you actually face giygas and see this fucked up tortured soul and that makes the final boss really special, but as a whole experience I think it's a lot lesser for it.
>>735701889Dude.That's Pummies.
>>735773251>遠くに離れて…using the te-form in hanarete makes it sound like he wanted to say more but stopped. kinda like:>we're far apart and...
>>735775714Sounds like a mix of wanting things to be over-explained and not noticing what was already answered. Giygas is obsessed with Ness because Ness is prophesied to stop him, it wouldn't make sense for him to NOT be obsessed. Giygas appeals to peoples greed and cruelty, the mani mani statue is a big golden idol. A very obvious symbol of avarice and power. The melodies are personal to Ness, a representation of the understanding of himself he gains at the sanctuaries. It's why he becomes fully realized when he completes the song. Not everything needs to be spelled out, maybe Mother 1 was just more... forgiving in the way way. I won't go into dive into the plot points Earthbound has that I feel Mother lacks because it seems like we were just looking for different types of storytelling.
>>735776114>Giygas is obsessed with Ness because Ness is prophesied to stop himI'm aware, that falls under the "you're the chosen one you gotta stop him" thing I already said. "Why? because prophecy" is shit writing.>Giygas appeals to peoples greed and cruelty, the mani mani statue is a big golden idol. A very obvious symbol of avarice and power. That's what it symbolizes, not what it actually is. Every comparable thing in 1 with similar story significance has an actual answer for what it is. The game tends to be pretty blunt with explaining things, but that's not the part I'm asking for. I just want it to actually be there instead of being SO open ended that the only remotely objective answer is "it's just kinda there">The melodies are personal to Ness, a representation of the understanding of himself he gains at the sanctuaries. It's why he becomes fully realized when he completes the song.Where did they come from? Did someone put them there? Learning the melodies were scattered by your great grandmother as a way to connect and meet you from beyond the grave is a really emotionally significant reveal, and it being her motherly song used to comfort Giygas that you then use against him ties everything together so nicely. Coming from that I was expecting that new song in 2 from the sanctuary spots to have some kind of significance like that but then there was just nothing.I don't want anything over explained, I just want it to exist at all.
>>735776669then you made the same complaint twice to pad out your list?>you have to explain why the magic being has magical talismansno>mother 8 melodiesThey're different from mother 2, it wasn't meant to be a retread of the same story. Giygas's entire shtick in earthbound is corrupting people by preying on their inner evil. Ness's sanctuaries help him understand who he is, confront his own innder darkness, and overcome it. The same thing he does to every other human villain (except Porky, who is a tragic mirror to Ness - a child that didn't receive enough love and now has no desire to be good). While those villains chose to give into their base desires, Ness chooses to fight his. That's the entire message of the game. They don't even beat Giygas by kicking his ass, they overwhelm his primitive maddened state with well wishes. In Mother, the origin of the song needed to be explained because it linked ninten and giegue. There's no such need in Earthbound because no such link exists. The only relevant complaint you had is the chosen one prophecy, which was just very common both at the time and in that type of story, so I guess it didn't bother me like it did you.
>>735695013Really liked Earthbound back in the day but I tried to play it again after 10 years and got bored. Seems like one of those things where the charm/novelty only works once.
>>735703846>>735725406I still think about this on a daily basis.Happy, happy. Blue, blue.
>>735777338>you have to explain why the magic being has magical talismansI mean, if you want the story to not be shit, you kind of do. You're literally pulling the "it's magic I ain't gotta explain shit" card>They're different from mother 2, it wasn't meant to be a retread of the same story.I didn't say they were the same or even should be the same, just that it's unsatisfying to get some kind of answer for what they are and how they got there in the first game and then get nothing for the parallel thing in the sequel. I'm not going to waste my time arguing with you if you can't even read my posts.>Ness's sanctuaries help him understand who he is, confront his own innder darkness, and overcome it.Again, that's the role they play, not what they actually are. When the first game has the same system and it ends up being revealed as a significant tangible element to the story events, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the sequel to do the same with its own story. "They serve this purpose but they're just kind of there idk" doesn't really do it for me.>There's no such need in Earthbound because no such link exists.>because no such link exists. That is EXACTLY what I'm criticizing here.

Anyone who hasn't already should really try Mother 2 Deluxe 3.0. It genuinely adds a bunch of cool stuff that makes the game feel both more complete and soulful, like the party spirtes appearing in battle for the character's turn as seen in >>735699754 and in general being more expressive.
Why do Mother and Mother 2 Giygas even have the same name when they're hardly related? Ninten and Ness are closer to being the same character than the Giygases are.
>>735778657>strawman>no counter argumentI accept your concession
>>735778730seconding this. I picked it up when it was mentioned earlier in the thread, and I'm in Twoson now. Honestly the overworld run button may have been enough to sell me on the hack, it seems very well-implemented
>>735778872They could be related though. Mother 1 explains why some humans know PSI, which carries into Mother 2. You mindbreak Giygas with human kindness at the end of Mother 1 and he ends up retreating to where he is in Mother 2, totally losing himself. You have to put him out of his misery as the Chosen 4.
>>735778872because they're the same person? he just changed in between mother 1 and 2. people change, man.
>>735778872>hardly relatedIt's the same entity. The Giygas you're fighting in Mother 2 is the same Giygas from 1, presumably from far in the future after being driven mad by a mix of power and desire for the love he once felt from Maria after the events of 1. He got so desperate for power that he gave up his corporeal form and sense of self and after getting busted out of the devil's machine he was left as nothing but a barely conscious twisting soul that can feel nothing but anguish. He's so obsessed with Ness partially because of the whole prophesy thing and probably partially because he resembles Ninten which brings him back to his origin and Maria. The story is all about stopping this abstract symbol for ultimate evil but once you see him you realize that while you are saving the world by doing it you're actually just putting a tortured soul out of his misery. Everyone on Earth is just like "yay you killed the horrible evil monster, good job!" but only you and your buds know the tragedy of what was actually going on. Nigga just wanted to be loved and the only way to save the universe is to kill him by showing him the love he will never have.
>>735775714>the game never explains what the melodies are, what's going on with the mani mani statue, why giygas is here now and why he's so obsessed with Ness specifically, anything really.huh, that's something I prefer about Mother 2 over Mother 1I think what's important isn't that those things are explained but that Ness/you go out and discover them. once you have there's a strong sense of what those elements *represent*-- maybe our difference is that I value that more than specific plot and worldbuilding. I also think it's very important for the game's structure that giygas *isn't* explained. giygas develops throughout each subplot--his influence leads to paula's kidnapping, mr. monotoli's greed, porky's degeneration. I think the game intends players to wonder what sort of motivation the character controlling those situations from the background would have, which makes the reveal of what giygas actually is very striking, that all of the pain he's caused was nothing more than violently lashing out at the world around him, a response to his own pain. I strongly disagree with your statement that the build-up to that moment is a "non-existent story," since I think it *is* the game's story. actually, what is your definition of a "story"?
>>735781345>I strongly disagree with your statement that the build-up to that moment is a "non-existent story," since I think it *is* the game's story.I mean, the way it builds up to that moment is by having its story be so simple and surface level. It makes for a great ending because it creates a lot of contrast but I don't think it's "worth it" I guess.
>>735781552How old are you?
>>735781552"surface level"... did you not want to save paula? did you not want to reach the top of monotoli's building and confront him? was it not compelling to see Porky rise to power as he becomes an ever more terrible person?

Nothing in Mother 1 implies Giygas was so unstable he was going to go insane.>Ness reminds Giygas of Ninten and Maria!Headcanon. Giygas is obsessed with Ness because of the prophecy. There is literally NOTHING in Mother 2 that directly references Mother 1. >b-but muh "Giygas Strikes Back title-"Marketing tactic. Nothing in the game references Giygas's attack in Mother 1.They actively made sure to remove any and all direct references to Mother 1 from Mother 2, a beta version had Porky taunting the chosen four at the end of the game, saying "What are you going to do, sing?". They wouldn't remove something like that unless they were intentionally trying to make the stories separate. There is absolutely nothing these stories gain by actually being connected and Giygas being the same character. Their themes directly clash with one another, Giygas in M1 is an alien that is spurned by humanity, but the genuine power of motherly love makes him question his ways. M2 Giygas is a pure, embodiment of evil, most likely supposed to be some reflection of Ness himself and his lost childhood innocence.Focusing on these retarded non-existent connections between games makes you miss the actual themes and messages these games are trying to have. Not all sequels have to be directly narratively connected. They called him Giygas because M2 is a reboot of M1.
>>735783523It honestly seemed to have been a change in development Itoi said in an old interview that Ness and Ninten being the same is up to interpretation but he said that far before Earthbound released and there's a crap ton going against the two remotely being the same personWe saw the Mother 2 exhibit, there were multiple callbacks to Mother 1 cut from the final gameAs far as the Japanese are concerned, Mother 2 and Mother 1 are separate
>>735781994I'm talking about the main overarching story, not the smaller containted chapters. If you're talking about that stuff Mother 2 actually has more of it, but it's not what we've been talking about.>>735782309You're a complete moron and you should try actually reading my posts.
>>735783943M2's final version was clearly not supposed to be a follow up to M1, it makes me really wish we did get a game that followed up M1's plot and the blatant sequelbait it had at the end. If I had to guess, the developers learning M2 would get localized is probably what made them swap to making the game its own thing and a complete reboot. Probably for the best even if I wish we got a genuine M1 sequel, M2 ended up becoming a far more unique game that stands well on its own because of it.

>>735794724I remember when the sans reveal made everyone forget terry was in the game
>>735794384Megalomania was its inspiration, not in any musical sense, but a thematic one. Toby said he wanted Megalovania to basically be his musical signature, a "hey Toby Fox was on this project" track, in the way Megalomania was Odio's theme across time in Live A Live.Pretty sure that fell through after Undertale was so popular and it became the Sans theme but it will remain to be seen if Megalovania features into Deltarune in an unironic fashion.

>>735795526That doesn't imply Giygas from M1 and M2 are the same at all. Giygas in M2 being a being of pure evil =/= M1 Giygas going insane. And once again, they specifically went out of their way to scrub any mention of M1 from M2. Why would they do that if the games were supposed to be connected? What does the game being connected add? This isn't like M2 and M3 where M3 continues Porky's story and directly references M2. Absolutely NOTHING in M1 is referenced in M2, and knowing what happens in M1 adds no extra context for M2's story, unlike M3 where knowing Porky's backstory and his theme of being an eternal manchild wishing to return to his past plays into the theme of the game.>>735796163Itoi also said you can see Ness as Ninten as you want, which honestly just tells me that he sees M2 as a complete reboot of M1 and a different universe.
>>735794332>Mother>final boss is Giygas>Mother 2>title screen says "return of Giygas"
>>735796551i think it's more that itoi didn't want to mess with the player's imagination and self insertion. or he didn't want to turn off new players.ness can be ninten if you want or he can be someone else if you want. giegue/giygas is giegue/giygas though. how that relates to m2 is up to your interpretation.i think it gives clarification to why giygas is even invading in m2 because he said he'd be back in m1.but the characters can be interpreted however you want. if you interpret it as a reboot, then it's just as valid.
>>735796552Cool, why doesn't the game acknowledge the events of Mother 1 in any meaningful way? If you believe 2 and 1 Giygas are one in the same, how do you explain no one in the game knowing the events of Mother 1? Why does Buzz Buzz not mention Giygas attacked before? Why is Mother 2's Magicant completely different from Mother 1's? Why are the eight melodies completely different when they were an integral part of Mother 1's story and Giygas as a character in Mother 1?I guess Ness must be some reincarnation of Mary, since he has a Magicant and since it's called Magicant that MUST mean it's the same Magicant from Mother 1! >>735796812That's my point. I just don't like people acting like M1 and M2 Giygas are the same as fact when it's just headcanon and meant to be up for your interpretation. If Itoi wanted you to for sure think they were the same character, he would've kept in the references to it, instead of scrubbing even extremely tiny ones like the singing line. That, and it's just pointless. No one has really been able to argue what the characters being the same adds to the story, because it doesn't add anything. Mother 1 is about Giygas as a character, while Mother 2 is about Giygas as a concept because Itoi wanted to explore different ideas with each game. Attempting to connect the games just brings up too many questions and obvious plotholes and makes the characters less interesting.
>>735796551god you're a fucking idiot, he's the same character with the same exact name, the same army of the same aliens, using the same tactics to achieve the same goal. I just don't like people acting like M1 and M2 Giygas are the sameit's just as valid as saying m2 giygas is a rebooted version of m1 giygas that exists in his own story bubble. this might be getting semantical at this point though. and giygas in m2 would've had to come to earth at some point prior since he is "striking back". it's just that whatever that means in the context of m2 is up to your interpretation because as you said, they scrubbed direct references to m1. they scrubbed porky saying that you should try singing to giygas.

Multiple Magicants can exist.>>Why are the eight melodies completely different when they were an integral part of Mother 1's story and Giygas as a character in Mother 1?Because they are different melodies, different melodies can exist and in fact you are not collecting melodies in Mother 2, it is just the act of Ness visiting his Sanctuaries/ "Places that are his alone" that opens Magicant, the melodies are just something that come along with it. Maybe you should try reading the dialogue in EarthBound. This was all explained by the old man in Magicant and Buzz Buzz.
i personally think it makes sense for ninten to be ness since it explains how he got psi powers in m2. psi powers don't have an origin in m2 unless you say it takes place after m1 and the psi powers were alien knowledge that george's research imprinted onto others.and then that also explains why giygas is even invading again in m2. he had to come back to scrub the earth people after one took the secret alien power knowledge. it's like countries attacking each other over nuke knowledge or other secret weaponry.but giygas got hung up on a prophecy of ninten/ness defeating him so he started to seethe and go crazy. i think giygas abandoning all emotional attachment and memories was a way to try to avoid ninten/ness stopping him again with emotions like he did before with singing.but this is headcanon based how m1 and m2 play out.
>>735797949nta but on the topic of the 8 melodies, i wonder if the m2 version was at some point going to be the same as the m1 version. porky was going to suggest singing to giygas and giygas' theme has a section where the m2 8 melodies play but it gets drowned out by the main giygas theme that sounds like unpleasant noises.i wonder if it was going to be something like, you can sing to him but the 8 melodies get drowned out and do nothing this time.

No, you were there for it, you already know.>Ah yes, I remember Giygas in Mother 1 saying he came from the future, and I also remember him being a swirling embodiment of evil.Well then you're misremembering, because he changed inbetween the two games retard. If you weren't so retarded you'd be able to put together what happened to him based on the dialogue given in each game.>I also remember beating Giygas with TWO boys and a girl. All four including Teddy contribute, but nice try at bullshit semantics.>But they have the same name. How are they different if they have the same name? That must mean they're the same area, just like how Giygas in M1 and M2 are the same because they have the same name.So you have paradoxical beliefs about Magicant, then? You are beyond retarded.
>>735797949>3 boys and a girl defeating Giygas, hmm when did that last happen? When Ness went back in time? Earthbound paints Giygas as a much more supernatural entity than just "an alien." Future Giygas, Past Giygas, Present Giygas, they all exist right now and also never. He's a singular entity and also the embodiment of everyone's negative feelings and also is godlike and also powerlessly stupid and also omniscient and also a werewolf and also a duplicate of Ness and also Ness' father lol. Giygas is paranormal and downright spiritual.I have to imagine modern day "fans" of this OUTRIGHT DEMAND YOU MUST LOVE EVERY GAME IN THE SERIES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and simply live in a time where "Mother" was just as famous as "Earthbound." I get it, I understand that, no, really, I do. The Internet made access to all that information both easy, obvious, and constant. But in 1995, as an 8-year-old kid living on a military installation... saw a golden smooth spikey space robot, I thought was being piloted by someone in a chair in its head, on a SNES video game box and asked my Mom to buy it for me. I liked that game and loved that music. I was a fan.
>>735798868>Because he doesn't have to. Do I have to mention that covid happened in my post? No, you were there for it, you already know. Then why is he explaining Giygas to Ness like he doesn't know who he is? Shouldn't everyone in Mother 2's world know? Weird how these types of plotholes aren't an issue with Mother 2 and 3's connections, it's almost like they were putting thought into how those games were connected since 3 is a genuine sequel.>Well then you're misremembering, because he changed inbetween the two games retard. If you weren't so retarded you'd be able to put together what happened to him based on the dialogue given in each game.Headcanon.>All four including Teddy contribute, but nice try at bullshit semantics. You can beat the entire game without ever getting Teddy. By that logic, Pippi also helped so why didn't the prophecy mention her? Please actually play Mother 1 before making headcanons about it.>So you have paradoxical beliefs about Magicant, then? You are beyond retarded. You call me autistic but you're too autistic to understand basic sarcasm. Hilarious, you must be ESL.
>>735799280The game crushes your headcanon the moment it boots up. You deny the reality in front of you like a troon. You clearly haven't played Mother or Mother 2, and fail to read a simple title. Is English your second language?
>>735796551>What does the game being connected add?it doesn't have to add anything for it to be true
>>735799280i don't disagree with you since i think m2's connections to m1 are up for interpretation. but for the point about teddy helping beat m1 giygas, he's one of the main party members you mange in the naming screen and the m1 version of the chosen 4 plush set has ninten, ana, lloyd, and teddy.
>>735798469Nothing else was working. No attacks worked, no items worked, no PSI worked... you had to try everything.iirc, if you did select "Pray" when it became necessary, the dialogue result was different than normal. Which, if you played the game heavily enough, you'd recognize and think>That's oddAnd then try it again, watching it get stranger and stranger and then outright obliterating him.
>>735797301>If you believe 2 and 1 Giygas are one in the same, how do you explain no one in the game knowing the events of Mother 1?Why do they have to for Giygas to be the same character?>Why does Buzz Buzz not mention Giygas attacked before? Is buzz buzz omniscient? >Why is Mother 2's Magicant completely different from Mother 1's?It's Ness's magicant>Why are the eight melodies completely different when they were an integral part of Mother 1's story and Giygas as a character in Mother 1?They're ness's 8 melodies.
>>735799551But I bought "Earthbound." What was "Mother 2?"That looked like a poster from the movie "War of the Worlds" (1953). Is this, like, a remake of that?Do I have to visit movies, see "2" or "Strikes back!" and forcibly assume "I must be watching a sequel?"
>>735799280You obviously didn't play MOTHER
>>735799840>mother 2 isn't a sequel to mother>the villain with the same name striking back isn't the villain from the preceding gameman you are having an absolute melty about this.
>>735800169>Mary says this>Beat the game with only Ninten using the onyx hook trickwhoops.Anyway, if you people are so sure about Mother 2 being a direct sequel to 1, why wasn't this cliffhanger followed up on? Why were all references to 1 removed from the game? Why is Giygas absolutely nothing like his Mother 1 incarnation? Why is it when Mother 3 re-used Porky, they actually continued his arc in a natural way while acknowledging the events of Mother 2?
>>735801040>directthere you go adding details to attack
I play (and remember) Earthbound as a different game Itoi made under the same parameters as some other game he made for the NES console in Japanese that no one knows about. They have zero written connections to each other. At best, Earthbound has thematic references because the SNES can represent his story with better graphics and also since that was 6 years ago he can fix any errors and make enhance any changes he wants to make.
>>735695490>What am I missing?the fucks I give
>>735801414Cool, so you admit Mother 2 isn't a direct sequel and is instead a reboot that reuses concepts and names but does different interpretations of them.>>735801534This anon gets it. Though I wouldn't really say Earthbound/Mother 2 is trying to redo Mother 1's story, I think Itoi got different ideas for it partway through development and decided to explore those instead of just trying to do 1 again. I find both Mother 1 and 2 Giygas very interesting characters, but they're blatantly different. It's like saying Zelda's Ganon/Ganondorfs are all the same character. They're all different interpretations on an character/concept. Yes Skyward Sword says they're all reincarnations of the same character but that's dumb and a retcon shut up.
>>735801862No, Mother 2's events follow Mother 1's in the same setting. I never claimed it was a "direct" sequel, that was your strawman to attack. I never thought they were closely related outside of sharing the same character as the villain
>>735802031>No, Mother 2's events follow Mother 1's in the same setting.Except it doesn't. Mother 1's events are never mentioned in Mother 2. If Giygas is the same character, then he hopped universes, and 2's universe is completely different from 1's. There's too many plotholes and questions brought up otherwise.
>People are actually arguing with the "Giygas isn't Giygas" anon.KEK vehemently denying an extremely obvious fact really is the easiest form of trolling.
>>735802123are you >>735775714?
>>735793427This is just a weird translation right? The Japanese word for physiology (生理) is also used as a euphemism for menstruation. But I assume Itoi just meant literal physiology.
>>735696282>Isn't it weird how no one in the West gave a shit about this in the 1990severyone did, but as a rentalif you were there in the period (you weren't), you'd know that you'd go to blockbuster, the box was big, so you wanted to rent it to see why the box was bigthen you played it, there was someone else's save, you were confused, you tried to start a new save, the sharks kicked you ass, and you maybe did or maybe didn't rent it again because it was cool but it wasn't fun
The fact that EB swapped literal America to fucking "Eagleland" should be evidence enough that the two games aren't related.

>>735757124>! If you're up for it I'd love to see Paula giving Ness a knee-high sock-clad footjob with her mary janes removed off to the side. Maybe Ness is cumming and a bit above-average in size? Alternatively, same thing but with Ana and Ninten instead, except Ana would be wearing white tights. !<First time catching a live thread with you, been a longtime fan!

>>735802219If you're claiming similarities on name alone, then the opening title sequence already proves they aren't the same Giegue.
>>735802569you felt the need to add in "direct," you can tell me what you meant by it if my interpretation is wrong.
>>735802650>the opening title sequence for mother 2 saying "name of villain from mother strikes back!' proves that they're not the same characterI admit you got me, I'm too keen to argue, I take bait almost every time.
>>735788546Lol what a faggot you are, go back and never return
>>735802238same one who just replied, but, i could also see how itoi might genuinely refer to menstruation since he's overall talking about dealing with problems that you just have to get through and endure with no other real solution.
Maybe playing this game in Japanese is better.
>>735802867>the raped telling others what to doNo thanks, Earthbound's been my favorite game ever since I played it at the same age you got abused. Keep your fetish to yourself. Nobody gives a fuck about quiet perverts.

>>735802606It's from Nintendo Dream Vol. 147 (July 2006). I can't find a scan of it online, though.
Was there an event written in Earthbound where an alien overlord invaded Earth and killed millions? I totally missed that dialogue box.I remember a meteorite landed in Eagleland's Onett and a sentient bee from the future warns a gradeschool child about an upcoming war, though.
>>735803337Yes, did you play the game?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUgyQj5Hw9sI still dont get wth is the point of making a remake of mother 1 if they wont even fix the problems mother 1 had in the first place.
Some of the fanart being posted its so old it makes me nostalgic.
>>735803331i can only find the eng translation for it on the internet archive and fobby.net
I cant find mother 2 deluxe 3.0, only older versions. anyone help plz?
How in the fuck is this thread still up?
>>735696282No one gave a fuck about JRPGs until FF7, even FF6 and Chrono Trigger weren't exactly selling off shelves. Everyone did go back and play the catalog of games after they got a taste. I remember having a hard time finding copies of Chrono Trigger and Earthbound in 1997.
what makes mother special is itoi draws from his own experiences to make games. people making earthbound inspired games don't use their own experiences. they just use earthbound to base their game off of.
>>7358047642 autists argued over m1 giygas being m2 giygas and the opposite for half the thread.

>>735804780and in doing so, itoi makes games that feel like you are having a personal connection with itoi. by playing them. it feels like itoi is teaching me lessons from his own experiences. it feels like this old nip dude is telling me everything will be okay despite the horrors of the world and i don't even know this dude. this is how people get attached to these games. or maybe it's just me.but these games tell me things and give me the weird sort of comfort i needed when there was no one else there for me when i needed it.
>>735805248That's the function of art, which used to be the domain of the experienced.
Everyone has that weird phase where they become fans of Earthbound, for like this or the other reason.Later you will naturally come to the conclusion that this game is REALLY overrated, like it is not even among the best RPGS in the SNES let alone that generation. I had come to play the Mega Drive RPG games as of late, a lot of them were just as innovative, maybe is because they follow that odd 90s Brownish - Yellow color palette of adventure games (Even Pc games did that) but Secrets of Evermore, which is the other game Toby Fox took inspiration from, deserves more attention.Earthbound is fine but it is super simplistic in contrast to what was going on, the funny part is that it is highly praised by guys in their late teens or early 20s but if you had played Earthbound as a kid you would had felt robbed given it was neither Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy 3/VI.I don't think anyone would had prefer at the time Earthbound over Pokemon.
>>735804764thread is happythread is blue
>>735805692Nope, been my favorite game since I was a kid. Yes, I'm aware that that's because it was the right time to play it. yes, I'm aware of the gameplay flaws. Don't care, it's an earnest and touching story and people don't need to appreciate it as anything more than that.Stop letting FOTM fags define your perception of a game's fans, retard.
>>735805692i don't care if you think my appreciation of the mother series is invalid or whatever. these games resonated with me and i love itoi's writing.

>”This Mother 3 NPC exhibits a number of intriguing parallels with the deuteragonists featured in the original Mother, and EarthBound—respectively. Among these notable similarities are the distinctive pink dresses the 3 women are donning, their shared interest in religious or spiritual themes, and their striking blonde hair. At first glance, one might be tempted to dismiss these resemblances as mere coincidences or casual nods from the developers to earlier works in the series.”Maybe this guy is reading too much into it.https://www.reddit.com/r/earthbound/comments/1s3kvqq/can_we_please_talk_about_this_random_npc_from_m3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
>>735805692I think it kind of sucks to play but the ending is so memorable and left me feeling such a bizarre mix of emotions that it'll always hold a place in my heart. I feel similarly with the first game, it made me feel the same way but with a very different vibe and it was spread through more of the game instead of packed all at the final boss. I haven't gotten around to 3 yet for a handful of reasons, I hope I like it as much
>>735806430It's not that is invalid but there is a reason people like it for every reason but the gameplay. The pace is kind of when you get to Fourside. Then it is somewhat linear to the end.
>>735805836Fucking no one owned this game at $100 at the time, you lying tranny.>FOTM fagsThe fuck are you on about? Earthbound has had a fanbase for decades now but became increasingly popular way before Undertale. But again it is a phase, it will always be phase because it resonates more with adults than with kids.If you had to rate all the SNEs games Mother would barely make it to the top 10 and even then you would be very bias with that decision. It has no replay value and the gameplay is mid by RPG standards of the era.
>>735807836yeah, that is true then. the gameplay is nothing special and even drags sometimes. but i still love the mother games.
>>735807989when are people not biased when rating their favorite games though? and games are a sum of their parts. that's how something like mother 2 can have mediocre gameplay but still be amazing because of everything else.
>>735807785Mother 1 and 3 have great endings.Mother 2 ends in a cliffhanger after a non boss fight despite the fact Cave of the Past is the perfect spot for late game grinding. The gameplay is really standard of an RPG and RPGs went through a lot at the time, a lot of experimentation in the 16 bit era.Fourside and Dungeon Man mark the points where the pacing becomes kind of sluggish.I cannot say I like the way Mother 2 concludes, I feel my opinion at the time I was deeply into these games was shaped by Starmen net and Chugga, not sure how would I had feel about the ending without heavy recontextualization, especially without knowing he was the antagonist of the first game and all the changes he went through. He feels barley involved into this as a character and him erasing his emotions and what he perceived as weakness breaking him needed further exploration.Again, as a kid I would had thought the ending was dumb, without context I would had thought the ending was rushed, but I played the games after watching youtube videos about knowing what to expect.
I still need to finish my Earthbound playthrough. I reached the dinosaur area / lava caves but just sorta stopped playing there. I know it's not too far away from the end of the game too. But the late-game inventory management really takes away a lot of the fun, all my characters have full inventories, the storage is nearly completely full, and I don't know what to keep or get rid off, maybe I should just toss all future items I get and just push through the rest of the game.
>>735808230I did the same thing. But I beat Magicant, I think. I forgot about it for years, then in '24 I just started over and beat it.
>>735808225I played 1 first and I'm really glad I did, it makes a huge difference. Even without it though, the final boss's tone shift and that "nobody back home really understands how fucked this is" feeling is pretty special
>>735808216>that's how something like mother 2 can have mediocre gameplay but still be amazing because of everything else.Exactly the point.I am not a JRPG buff, and look I even got a Mother 1+2 cartridge with me but if you take into account all the games in the SNES library Mother gets pushed out of the top 10 quickly.Again, fine doesn't mean trash but it definitively is overrated when you look at the bigger picture.Especially because the time frame this game is referencing gets further, and further away. There is a feeling of nostalgia encapsulated in this game but at one point it just as relevant as the Wonder Years was to Gen X.
>>735808230The illusion of free choice, my man, I lucked out and got like a couple of power items in my run without actually grinding. The sword for example in the Stonehenge base. It doesn't matter, Earthbound is not that deep, just equip items that have the larger number and keep moving onwards. The only REAL inventory change that kind of makes a difference is the Bat that is dropped in Magicant before the area boss but has a low chance to drop in one particular area and it literally doesn't matter, like it is a one turn difference and you only have like at best a few hours left to the end.Super Mario RPG involves more decision making than Earthbound.
>>735808225>Mother 2 ends in a cliffhanger after a non boss fightso does mother 1.>>735808523i mean i think it makes sense why mother 2 would get in top 10 snes games for someone no matter how mediocre it feels to actually play. it's probably my favorite snes game anyway despite that. i think you're basing overrated-ness on only one factor of video games when there's also sound design, music, presentation, graphics, story, writing, atmosphere, characters, world building, etc.i don't think earthbound is overrated in any of those categories.
Good night EarthBound thread.
goodbye and see you in the next thread
