He didn't, physical stores killed themselves. Instead of making special editios of every single game, things that are worth the money, they just shove a disc inside a generic case, and a printed paper on it. Why would I get this instead of just buying online? There's no point.

When games launch on Steam, the devs make banners, cards, badges, and so on. Why couldn't stores ask them for a single 3D model like an amibo for printing? Put a physical book, a map, a printed gyzmo on every game, and it wouldn't have died. And obviously, witthou raising the price from 60 to 200 over stuff we know didn't cost more than 20 dollars to make.

If you refuse to evolve, then you deserve to die

Humans don’t actually do anything related to game development. Theres a brain which exists outside of any human body that directs them. The purpose of a companies employment structure happened due to there being a small amount of logic when it came to the labor part of the equation. And, this big sky brain essentially ran with the concept. Thats actually him controlling what people are saying, he’s literally larping every single word is like a complete lie. Which is another thing that happened due to there being a small amount of logic to it, and he just runs with it. So to actually create the physical devices necessary to create gaming took human labor structures. And this system of command was naturally “black mirrored” by somebody calling themselves the devil. And, the devil loves playing video games, but like I just went over, the most efficient way to make video games for himself to play, was actually to black mirror the systems. Thats how we get these superstars like notch, brode, metzen, they’re all acting by his command, as part of a front for his system, to help keep everything organized. The need for organization among his own clones is apparent. He typically boxes them into pens, and has them line up to feed and water themselves. He walks them like they’re his dogs to keep their bodies alive a bit longer. And, he uses them to make video games, for himself to play on his other clones. And gaming itself actually arose due to military budgets which produced a better way to trade. And, gaming was just another thing he could do with that type of system. I’d actually just suggest not listening to him talk, he calls himself the devil for a reason. He is a gay rapist who kills lots of humans from a place of complete safety.

You never owned software in the first place. Software has been licensed for longer than steam existed. As for whether you can continue to play your games after Valve goes bankrupt, yes, most likely.

That's ignoring the fact that you don't know what the word bankruptcy means, and the absurdity of a corporation that makes Google look like a mom n pop convenience store in terms of per head profit is about to go bankrupt.

I’ve been studying steams internal stock exhange rates for 10 years. I work closely with FAANG companies like Microsoft’s development and analytics teams. What we’ve recently discovered is that the steams inflation rating is going sky high. We’ve all predicted a complete market crash for valve is coming, and bankruptcy is a sure thing. The company is going to close down. They’re keeping it secret for now. Theres talk about transferring steam libraries to a new sister company, but that’s not a sure thing.

Physical media was never intended to be some kind of solution to a hypothetical problem that would emerge in an Orwellian future
It was the only delivery system available to get product to you. The product itself was still digital.
Digital distro replacing physical media is inevitable and there has been countless analogs to that in history.
Warping digital distro around SaaS, censorship, access and surveillance though? That is a failure of your government

This
You got one shelf that consisted of a handful of the latest releases, a few evergreen titles like The Sims and the aforementioned Blizzard games, and $10 casual games like Bejeweled and those hidden object games. Anything else and you had to buy it online and wait a week or two for it to be shipped out, and if you're already buying games online why not just skip the wait and get it as an instant download?
I learned how to pirate games because I wanted to play Postal 2 and no store in town sold it.

Physical was going to die out for PC regardless, just due to the nature of the open platform.

no, you don't own the hardware since you bought it with the stipulation that you'll never be able to overwrite the operating system

your console has fuckloads of anti tampering measures to prevent that, you have a separate tiny soc just for security

other anon is correct in practicality. you don't own either intellectual property but it's harder to ban your console
even if Sony banned your playstation for any type of TOS violation, you probably still have whatever offline functionality. with Steam you're straight locked out

given our overly new mobile world, nobody wants to schlep around their console and games and the sales numbers show it. unironically consoles became a dad thing lol

it really is a difference without a distinction.

while true, unlike Steam, don't connect to the server and you can play whatever games don't need a day 1 patch. which for the most part are Sony games and other minor ones

i don't know to what degree Sony will brick your playstation
>online feature exclusion or outright bricking it.

with an online service like Steam, you have no choice other than goldberg (and that's Steam specific) but that means you have to plan it advance, with playstation you just exist

some people like one, others the other. like i said, difference without much of a distinction
it's a preference and choice thing, and choice is good

IMHO there is less uncertainty with an online goldberg service type of thing than with something you own physically. oddly enough

Only an issue for online only games. When it comes to buying games on Steam, you can either look at it as you either being a loan shark, or you donating money out of good will, because you don't actually "have" to give these companies money to enjoy their games if you catch my drift.

>Why is he the good guy again?
Some believe Valve and Gaben by extention can do no wrong. The fact is that the company is trying to be perceived as the opposite of a big corp. And has some success. They get praise for putting the gamers (clients) first. It adds that every game they release is good in some way.
Also Steam sales. Steam is the ultimate choice.
The loose, "no bosses" structure of Valve does more bad than good imo, but people like it. They have desks with wheels so that they can join any team they find valueable at the time. Gaben profits directly from the good PR Valve has built for itself and is seen as "the good guy" as you put it.

picrel is just as likely as steam shutting down timmy. And for the record, any pc owner/gamer who actually cares about the hobby is already pirating installers for backups or backing up thier purchases. no, you can have your right to resell games, just don't call it ownership, it's too limited, you're just trading your license away
the same way you can't say you own consoles because you're not the administrator of the system and you're explicitly violating the terms under which you purchased it by jailbreaking it and thus lose functionality
the only thing you can truly own is PC hardware as that comes with bare metal access to everything

I don't thunk Steam is going anywhere doon, but I don't think people saying Steam and Valve will exist 'forever' are either using the same definition of that word as the rest of us or haven't put much thought into the logical inevitabilities here

Like of course eventually all businesses will cease to exist and all servers are destined to go offline for the last time, how could they not

At best you expect them to last longer than you will be alive so its just 'not my problem'
>>
>>735830887
>kills
If all Steam had to do was exist and offer a better alternative, it's not on Valve that these other businesses and practices fell by the wayside. Valve hasn't done anything to force its control of the market except offer a fantastic product. The absolute fucking gall.
Physical Games:
>Possessed a degree of inconvenience to acquire
>In some cases started equating to digital products anyway because of file size limitations, meaning the box you bought just had a part of the game or a code in it while you downloaded the rest somewhere else (wasn't so much of an issue with BD consoles from what I remember, but how many people even owned BD drives for their PC?)
>Retail locations weren't guaranteed to have the game you wanted if it was older/more niche, and buying the physical copy from their website resulted in a significant degree of wait time (meanwhile your friends are playing now). Especially a problem with PC selection since PC selections were typically far smaller at any game store I went to.
Renting games:
>Also inconvenient
>Was always a bad deal long term
>Was console-only
>Became a significantly worse deal as games became bigger and more complex (renting MK 64 was perfectly fine, but imagine renting Oblivion)

Meanwhile Steam grew to offer a huge selection of games, has regular sales, and offers both great consumer features and customer support. Its indefinite "ownership" is the only vague, distant, and potentially minor drawback in sight. Realistically, Valve isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future—maybe if whoever takes over after Gaben fucks up tremendously—and the files still get downloaded to your computer for you to do with as you please. DRM is circumventable. Any online game you'll get screwed out of playing by a Steam shutdown today, won't be alive by the time Valve does shut down in the future (if we live to see that).

Buying a game on disc or cartridge is also technically long term renting. Every company but Nintendo hasn't put the full game on the disc for about a decade now, and Nintendo's just starting to do the same.
"Connect to the internet to download and install the latest patch, or else you can't play the game you paid for."

And even in the case of older games, you don't really have permanent easy access to your games just because you have them on disc or cartridge. Every publisher, going all the way back to the Atari days, has taken pains to make copying the game files from the medium as difficult as possible. They've never wanted you to do it, and they took every measure reasonable to stop you. It simply wasn't part of the value proposition of your purchase. You weren't entitled to a replacement copy if your cartridge broke, or your disc got scratched.
But you are entitled to redownload and reinstall a game you "own" on Steam or another platform, across any compatible machine you can log in on. In some sense, that's actually an improvement. There was a time when you could only ever install a game three times. With the x86-64/ARM convergence of all the consoles, backwards compatibility comes free, and there's no reason to believe that'll stop being true in the future.

The truth is that they always wanted to keep you on a short leash, but exactly short it was possible to make that leash wasn't well understood.

Ownership and the ability to keep things available even after they've been abandoned don't necessarily mean the same thing. If you own the last extant retail copy of Bleepo Blorpus's Gay Adventure for the Shitbox Ninteen-Ought-Six, and the wax cylinder it's on breaks down, you're just as much out of luck as someone who bought games through Direct2Drive's launcher in 2004, or someone who bought The Crew on uPlay.

Digital distribution of games was inevitable. Steam was just so good and convient that the transition was faster than it might've been with alternative providers.
Plus GameStop dismantled the physical distribution from within by focusing on merch instead of reasonable reselling of older games. They could've become the western version of Bookoff, but instead decided to ditch consoles older than 10 years.

>on a gaming store where DRM is entirely optional unlike consoles where everything is locked down and indies get sued for making a game
>this is bad somehow

The difference here is that people are able to play 20 year old titles easily on steam, I can't do that easily with any physical console games.

Half-Life 2 started the fucking awful trend of unskippable dialogue as apposed to skippable cutscenes.
Sony's movie games once separated gameplay from story and were highly replayable until they copied Trash-Life, so kill all millennial PCancer critics for what they did to western singleplayer games.

Steam bad am I right fellow contrarian zoomers? SecuROM and just not being able to easily buy any PC games at all good!!!!

Steamdrones.

>try to buy pc games at whatever game stores i had locally
>1 shelf out of 50 is for pc games, rest for the various consoles
>it was always just blizzard games and stuff like the sims
>had to pirate basically everything

Every game I've tried to play on console for the past ten years hasn't let me launch the game unless I update both it and the console first. I stopped bothering.

People who bitch about Gaben "killing gaming" and gushing over physical don't know things were pretty sucky for PC bros before Steam got big. They're all console casuals and consoles were favored over PC all through the 2000's.

Both PlayStation and Xbox. And I'm not just playing EA and Ubisoft shit either. If I don't let the game update, it just drops me back to the dashboard.

I had that experience the last time I tried to play 360 games.
>plug 360 into a old tv because my monitors don't have speakers (it's a 360 elite where you needed to buy some other bullshit to allow you to use another audio output which i don't have)
>no internet because it doesn't have wireless (once again you had to buy another bullshit thing to let you use wireless) and i wasn't running a cable across the house
>put in fm3
>"nah mate, needs an update please connect to xbox live to download"
>put in gears of war 2
>"nah mate, needs an update please connect to xbox live to download"
Just play the fucking game. I didn't even realize the 360 era was susceptible to this shit until it happened.
