The only time they've made mention of 'reps' is when Claptrap makes a point that each character at the table represents a popular form of fiction. Movies for Ash, TV for Brock, games for Claptrap, and comics for Sam and Max (of course all of them crossed over into another at some point, but you get the idea.) People have tried to fill that niche ever since as if it's the rules of the IP rather than just them again pulling whatever they had / thought would be cool.

I was thinking about this but in the concept of duo characters. Sam and Max in 2 are basically doing bits off of each other and I thought it'd be neat if they could swap in / out between rounds, then the other three could do the same with another character.
