I only got through SV and ZA because I autistically like Pokemon. They have a lot of problems and if you haven't played since Emerald you should just play ROM hacks instead or maybe the DS games.

Gen III is probably as good as it gets, maybe Gen IV with Platinum and HGSS. After that? Na. Don't bother. Just stick the Gen 3 and 4 (including remakes) and you have everything you need.

PvP players will keep turn based in champions tho.Play Platinum, HG/SS, B/W and B/W2, those games are still excellent. Everything after is mid.. Gen 8 & 9 run lag free on the Switch 2 or on an Emu, if your hardware is alright.

The structure of the game is better and honestly having to use all new mons is actually fine.
