Most of the game is just walking around. For every minute of story or combat you have three minutes where you’re just walking and nothing happens. An open world really isn’t suited to Stalker.

You can play it but it's just nowhere near complete. The game is basically live service pushing updates with major systems and mechanics, even world spaces.

It's a modern stalker game in the best of ways and worst of ways. Looks modern and graphics can look nice at times but you have to deal with the garbage dlss effects. The game was not made to play without it in my opinion as it has heavy framerate issues. Generally gameplay is the same but if anything it is more streamlined and forgiving than the originals. Artifacts are kinda lame and feel weaker compared to the original. Gun play is an improvement but nothing amazing. Exploration is honestly the best part. The environments are lifted from the old games and stitched together into one big map with almost no loading zones. Tons of stashes that actually require you to think to figure out, similar to korok seeds from BotW. There is a lot of exposition about the old games too so unless you have played them, you will be confused about certain things.

5/10 suffers from modern game issues but it still has its janky but soulful feels at times.

>>
>>735981456
Then the game will just turn into endless fast travel. Stalker 2 is really poorly designed.
They take these shitty fetch quests from freeplay mods for the original games without realising that they work because of A-Life, and they don’t even understand what A-Life is. This is a general problem with Stalker 2, the developers simply don’t understand what made the original games so iconic, so they just copy everything in a very superficial way and end up with this amalgam of Anomaly, Tarkov and a whole host of other things, completely missing the essence of Stalker.
>>

I always swing by all the anomalies I can manage to fit into my route. I also will explore PoIs nearby to the quest objectives to try and find more stashes etc.

The new balance is way better though, the running overhaul is huge, you can now job infinitely and jogging is much faster than walking.

>>735986682
They sorta ruined all their hype with the NFT announcement and pre-order weapon skins.
They backed out of both but the damage was done.
Then they released a "remastered" version of classic STALKER with everything Russian removed, which includes most of the memes like cheeky breeky.
It turns out that the original team is gone, half of them moved to Russia to make Metro a decade ago.
What else is there to say? We should be happy we got 3 games, but no more.
>>
>>735969809
Stalker 2 is alright ok but ain't there with the AI which is important for stalker in general. I plan on getting it to wind down after playing Gamma like a psycho.

>>735969809
Its actually pretty fun. The world is great. I enjoyed exploring a lot of places before the story sent me there. I didnt finish it though because I was enjoying it too much to see it end so I stopped playing waiting for some bugfix and performance patch to restart it from the beginning. But unfortunately seems like the devs consider the game is in a good enough state to focus on a dlc instead. Sad. I may never finish it just because of some stupid bugs and bad performance (and terrible artifact balance).
>>
>>735987061
The devs have been releasing massive updates for over a year since release, it's basically at the point it should have been at on release now.
Though I'm personally not really interested in the expansion, at least it will come with more updates for the base game.
>>
>>735986939
>with everything Russian removed
that says everything necessary about the dev team.

unrelated but there was a similarly janky-soul RTS about the Syrian civil war (called literally Syrian Warfare) by Russian devs. They were going to make the next Terminator RTS but once the Ukraine-Russia war started they were kicked away. Eastern European devs are a precious thing, its a shame when politics gets in the way.
>>
Please tell me it's been improved since October last year. I was so disappointed in it that I wasn't even upset, I just uninstalled and forgot it existed.

If not just play the older games, OP. You'll have a much better time with a shitload more content/mods at a fraction of the price.
>>
>>735987439
To be fair they were probably forced because the Ukrainian government banned the Russian language in public and cultural products.
However, that is also a literal crime against humanity so I'm not particularly sympathetic either.
>>
>>735987439
>They were going to make the next Terminator RTS but once the Ukraine-Russia war started they were kicked away
Do you mean Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance or was another one planned? Because those developers did actually finish that game and its DLCs, their company just wasn’t credited in the credits.
>>
>>735983198
I have a theory that devs will record footage played by an automated bot in slow motion using some dev tools at a lower frame rate then speed it up in post.
>>
>>735983198
You can record at a lower framerate and speed it up on the final render.
I learned this trick from Freeman's Mind.

I bought it when it was cheap on a cdkey site.
I've not completed the game, but I got to Duga.

It's a pretty OK game. Lots of bugs which is pretty usual for stalker games, so I shrugged it off.
Runs like shit. Typical for UE5 though.
Story is alright from what I've experienced so far.
I wish there were different types of weather, or atmosphere. I think, as much as it gets meme'd on, Analmeme does a good job at have varying atmospheric areas in different parts of the zone that make it separate from other areas.

If they ever fix the spawns of mutants, fix AI being retarded, quests not bugging out, the performance being shit, it'll be alright.

Game needed another 2ish years in the cooker DESU.
I enjoyed Metro Exodus more.

>>
>World is way bigger than the previous games put together

>>
The level of ambition the devs had for the original game was insane, they really poured their hearts and souls into it, it's such a shame they weren't given enough time to make it reality, they were planning on simulating the entire zone and have NPC's compete with the player for the main game objective which would dynamically take you all over the zone as the NPC's moved around with the key items, but they had to scale everything back due to deadlines and concerns for consumer hardware.
>>
I'll pretend it doesn't exist because they changed lore related things and removed everything russian even though it's based on a book written by a Russian author, so it's self defeating

its really solid game, gameplay wise. i love that shit constantly respawns and you are bombarded with random quests and such. Peformance was top notch and controller support was the reason i bought it in the first place. Game just ws missing some care like different arm textures when changing outfits, a bit less static weapons, a repair system with cheap repairs since armor breaks in like 10 shots and overall cheaper items. I mean i was at the end of the game and had like 100k rubles to my name so the rewards system was off too. I could play this game forever if it had some qol but most mods like anomaly and gamma go completely overboard and lose every bit of charm og soc has so i just play fnv which has everything and more

There is no blueprint for an A-life like system on UE5 (+ you would need to rebuild NPCs and encounters management systems). It’s not that it would be difficult to build one for Stalker; but for that they would need to code it themselves - like the devs for the original Stalker trilogy did.

I think the first time i heard about a-life is in 4chan threads bitching about it. And only instance of me seeing it in action in OG games was seeing some guy walk into an anomaly maybe trying to get an artifact. He got hit by lightning and died. Needless to say seeing that didn't make me cum in my pants. It just made me confused a bit and then i moved on. I still don't get what people see in this system except a springboard to bitch about new game.

Install SaneX A-life mod for SoC and enjoy your controllers in Bar and pseudogiant in rookie villiage.
>>
>>736012843
I think it's mostly about people wanting to see it implemented fully, properly in 2. Since most of intended behaviors in og games got cut for release and stored by fans.
Honestly the concept isn't as novel anymore. Many openworld games now have similar tech of NPCs and factions interacting in the open world while player travels around, it's not as novel as it was during Oblivion and Stalker 1 time.
>>
>>735995781
It would be a monumental undertaking and would require lots of expertise in C++, X-ray engine SDK, 20 year old archaic software and file formats, you'd have to reverse engineer and overhaul the entire game and engine basically, at that point it's easier to make new game from scratch, likely why GSC moved to Unreal with Stalker 2, the guys who knew how to wrench the X-ray engine likely weren't around anymore.
Stalker 2 fell short because it wasn't a hands-free creative and experimental passion project like the original trilogy, Stalker 2 followed contemporary game development protocol, a product to be marketed and sold following established guardrails and red-tape.

I was really apprehensive but I enjoyed it a lot, I got it on winter sale. To their credit despite all the DLC bullshit they are working at adding a good deal of content into the game and do listen to what people are asking for, and modders are already starting to work on it to an acceptable degree.

Alife was a major sales point for Stalker games back in the day. Even in that cut-down form we got it’s still pretty impressive.
>And only instance of me seeing it in action in OG games was seeing some guy walk into an anomaly maybe trying to get an artifact.
You come across Alife all the time, you just don’t notice it. Technically absolutely every NPC is part of Alife. They go about their business, trying to avoid anomalies, fighting their enemies, and, most importantly, they keep on existing and doing all this without your presence.
The main gimmick of Alife is that it tracks the actions of NPCs across the entire map at all times, regardless of what you’re doing. That corpse you found wasn’t just randomly generated recently, it was an NPC with a name who was going about their business and died in one way or another while you were on the other side of the map. You can load an old save file and find him alive
>>
>>736014202
You haven’t the faintest idea what Alife is if you think even one of these games has anything like it

Wait until they release all the DLCs at least. You have to trust me on that.

They're not openly saying that yet, but they want to make Cyberpunk 2077 level redemption arc.
I don't expect it to be great, or even good. But on current gen CPUs it's not worth playing due to performance issues.

>>736014031
The problem is that STALKER 2 tried to be open world, except they made very linear campaign, as if they wanted to make Shadow of Chernobyl 2. The open world is pointless. Instead of loading screens between the areas, now you have to sprint for kilometers between objectives.

STALKER 2 feels like it was built around being a potential platform for mods first and foremost.

The one thing the old A-life system added to the original trilogy was unpredictability, it's not something you will notice unless you sink a considerable amount of time into the games, I won't pretend the original A-life was perfect in anyway, far from it, it's janky and suffers frequent hiccups but it allows for dynamic unscripted encounters that the sequel is just incapable of and in a sense gives the zone life.

300 hours into CoP on a new run I was at the ruined theatre in Zaton and the ground started shaking out of nowhere and a pseudo-giant showed up, wrecked the group of stalkers sitting by the campfire nearby and then proceeded to kill me, I have no idea how it got there, I had no idea it could even happen at all, I assume it must've spawned at the edge of the map and chased some creature towards Skadovsk where it must've lost track and spotted the group of stalkers sitting by in the theatre and decided to agro, it's random encounters like this that made me fall in love with the old A-life system.

It is functionally the same if you just spawn dead bodies or mutants in a certain radius away from you. Conversely if you need that mutant to have walked 2km before it found you then you should also require each stalker you meet to have a name voice and unique backstory on how he even made it into the zone. And he should have his own hopes and dreams and personality.

you can restore russian language, the first thing i did after finding out but the damage is done. A real shame too because it runs like a dream and controller support is great

Patriotic (like all Ukies on the internet) actor playing this faggot got kidnapped from streets by draft officers in a car Stalker devs donated to the khokhol army. Now he and his wife are bitching at army draft officers (like all patriotic Ukies of course). I'm not joking.
>>
>>735969809
I would normally suggest pirating it, but the game is SO BAD it's not even worth the disk write wear and tear on your SSD.

Game runs like shit and looks soulless. You can instantly feel the same bland feeling all Unreal Engine 5 games have. The guns feel "plastic" and their sound is shit because of Unreal Engine 5 gun sound quality limitations. The characters use a British accent and it just breaks the immersion. The game is full of QTEs and other animations like for getting on a ladder, feels like Far Cry. The game is full of badly written dialogue that thinks it's clever but is not because it was written by some literal fucking peasants (not surprising considering Ukraine is an agricultural/industrial country). A-Life is also shit and whatever cope updates they made were just that... cope.

I always keep an open mind with video games and tell people to "just try it" when in doubt. But this game just sucks on all points. As a Stalker fan, this game has more in common with Ubishit's Far Cry than Stalker. As a video game fan, this game doesn't feel like a video game. It feels like what it is, a cash-grab made by ill-intended people to steal funds from Epic+Microsoft and blame it on "muh war".

Shit game made by shit people. Not surprising, considering the OG Stalker devs went on to make the Metro series, which would be a WAY better use of your time.

well the mutant in question wasn't dead, I encountered unpredictable behavior at a point where I thought I had the game figured out, your brain is a pattern-recognition machine, once patterns repeat enough times your brain grows bored, if you just spawn corpses in that works until the player figures out the game is just spawning corpses in at which point the illusion breaks and you grow bored of it, I think the A-life system hits the sweet-spot, it simulates just enough to keep things interesting while not being too taxing

frankly I don't know how the system works, I assume each spawn location has list of possible mutant spawns with differing chances, I never had a giant spawn smackdab in the theatre, only flesh, boars and dogs but I don't doubt there's a chance they could spawn there, I swear I've encountered chimera in Zaton as well on a fresh run long ago before even progressing any quests but I have no proof of it

>>736017119
not him and im not sure if its scripted or not but i heared bloodsuckers on different occasions near the army outpost at the train brdige near the rookie camp, I never seen them and i didnt care to find out but at least on 2-3 different occasions ive heard them roaming really close to the street. Kinda spooky even talking about this because i was undergeared at least 2 times
>>
>>735969809
I picked it up during the christmas sale and played it without mods. I put in about 130 hours and stopped just before the end because I want to wait for the upcoming updates. my biggest criticism are the lighting system, especially the exaggerated eye adaption, enemies that spwan near you - not right in front of you, but hidden yet close enough to feel off sometimes, and the missing binoculars. as far as I know all these issues are supposed to be improved in the next few months. and fyi I also enjoy playing gamma, I don't think anyone has to choose a side. gamma is obviously the better survival game, but I enjoy exploring the map in S2 much more and it still has the chaotic moments you know from the vanilla games
>>
It's insane to me that the game launched without NVGS, mutant loot and even master difficulty and they had to slowly patch them back into the game over almost 2 years

The game has none of the originals' atmosphere of lurking and STALKING through abandoned Soviet ruins, looking for artifacts and dodging bandits and mutants.
It completely lacks the soul of the originals. Why would you want to play it?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1Y4nc-4HVU

Do you, at any point in STALKER 2, feel like you'd want to be there yourself, walking through ruined apartment buildings with your rifle at the ready and your ears perked, looking for a quiet little nook to spend the night while some God-forsaken thing howls in the night?
No, you don't.
