Similarly in Ranked there used to be more flanks, but without them the subweapon spam became much worse. No one dared dive into the singular chokepoint so everyone just hung back and spammed the soda popper or homing torpedo thing until they got a lucky kill or their specials were charged. I don't know if the situation is any different now with all the updates but that's how I remember it before I stopped playing.

Sometimes I'd get so mad at the matchmaking that I'd eat multiple temporary bans in a row from quitting matches I knew wasn't gonna be any fun due to shit like this, and then just shut the game off. Splatoon 2's matchmaking was better somehow, it got worse with Splat 3.
