>replay old game you loved as a kid>it’s shitWhy is this so common?Did we just have lower standards?
pic unrelated btw
>>736004153I noticed this recently when replaying ps2 gta and dragon ball games.
>>736004153It’s more like you’re a retard. I replayed old games I liked as a kid and it’s still the same stuff as it was before. Nothing changed besides the fact that I jerk off to extremely effeminate men with feminine penises
>>736004153I used to play literally every video game genre as a kid (even grand strategy) and now all I play is casualslop.
>>736004153this looks literally ai generatedthis is not a real game
>>736004153Doesnt happen to me>Taz wanted>still absolute licensed kinotheyd never remake that game but the music and level themes kicked so much ass, id love to see it with good visuals.
>>736004153I was scared of this game when I was 5 for some reason
>>736004252holy fucking based
>>736004153The first level is pretty fun to explore, the second level is a downgrade, probably stopped playing there.
despite the meme, its clunky wasn't a thought then, we just enjoyed the video game in ignorant bliss.
>>736004293Fucking retard https://youtu.be/LtvrrdS_9kA?si=Ty3wchSOsLHGGqSX
For most of the games I got for myself, I'd ask my older cousins first if they were trash or not so I didn't waste my allowance
>>736004327It definitely was, we just didn’t know it. We just played the first legel over and over again then moved on to other games(Maybe that was just me, I had hundreds of pirated games on my dada pc and on writable discs, so I never had to force myself to finish anything)
>>736004153When you were younger these games were the peak of what technology was capable of. Your standards only rose after years of playing games. Your original reactions to these games were appropriate for the game. You cant understand this as easily in retrospect. Youre trying to listen to a song for the first time again and wondering why it doesnt feel the same. The song didnt get worse, you just aged and got exposed to more.
>>736004153>replay toys story 2>get filtered by the green goo in the street boss levelwhat the fuck was I eating as a kid to beat that thing effortlessly?
Media you enjoyed as a kid tends not to hold up when you're an adult.
>>736004153still the best 5th gen Mario 64 clone
>>736004337Almost all of these ps1 games had a superior pc port but every time someone replays them, they play the inferior ps1 version, and online stores always remake the ps1 ones. I know, ironically, emulating a ps1 game is easier than a win98 one but the Toy story 2 I played wasn’t this pixelated and running at 20 fpsEven more ironic, that it was actually the big games like Final Fantasy 7 and 8 that had atrocious pc ports, and every HD remake used them as a base.
>>736004323Thanks
>>736004153Of course we did.But also fuck the slime trash can boss and any other disney games that required me to beat the shit out of my spacebar to beat.
>>736004153halo reachkingdom heartsI think its because theyre not in 4k
>>736004153You replayed the wrong version. The only good version of toy story 2 is the PS1 version. Dreamcast sucks, N64 is the dreamcast version but worse.
Legitimately never happened. Resident Evil, Starcraft, Ridge Racer Type 4, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World just eternal bangers all the way down.
>>736004670Kingdom Hearts is very clunky and in HD it becomes even more obvious that every level is just a box But it’a worth it to slog through to get to KH2, one of the best games of all time
>>736004153Because as a kid you didn't know any better. Simple.I didn't know any better too.
>>736004326I remember there was an outside level I liked. I also remember an airport level with a bunch of conveyer belts I absolutely fucking hated and raged over.
>>736004153I think I only experienced that with Bomberman 64 TSA, and that's only kind of partially, I still enjoyed replaying it start-to-finish quite a lot.kid me interpreted the massive framerate drops in some areas as a boon, adult me thought it was astounding how common it was.
>>736004153>replaying old gaems and approaching to it with modern standards why are you so retarded? Don't touch old shit if you are pussy
>>736004893Yeah but there's tarmac kino after that where you can use the speed boots to race.
>>736004926>modern standardsLmaoThere are no good modern platformers either. Everyone stops you every five seconds to give you 500 lines of dialog. Every level is floating blocks in space The controls in old games might be shit but at least there is a designed videogame inside
>>736005171>Everyone stops you every five seconds to give you 500 lines of dialog. Every level is floating blocks in spaceYeah they're inspired way too much by nintendo games these days.
>>736004153I have never seen a Toy Story movie specifically because of this game. I hated this game so fucking bad I never wanted anything to do with Toy Story as a kid.
>>736004153pic massively unrelated, i played it last year
I played this on the ps, it was fun, probably one of the best ps games
>>736005318>implying the first level of this game isnt one of the best 3d platformer setpiece of its gen
People like OP are the ones projecting about others only liking something because of nostalgia. I hate midwits.
>>736005646>>736005653You gotta admit, the rest of the game isn't on the quality level of the first level that is actually fun to explore and aesthetically memorable. Good action game, but a letdown compared to the promise of the first level's exploration.
>>736004153Pic unrelated, the fuck are you on about? Toy Story 2 is better than Banjo Kazooie at the very least.
>>736005756The alley and toy store levels were fun, the airport level too as far as I remember
>>736004153crash team racing is one of the few games that wasn't shit when i revisited it
>dollar store license sloppaI think you just had a shit childhood my friend, if you played some real games you'd still enjoy them to this day.
>>736004153>Did we just have lower standards?Absolutely. Games were a lot lower quality in the past and not just in the graphics department. We also got fewer of them and had less experience with what quality looked like.Of course modern games often do shitty things that old games were sometimes better about, but on the whole old games are worse.
>>736005670Small guy in big ass house is always peak level design.
>>736004553ok
>>736004153Always wanted to play the Buzz game shown in Toy Story 2
>>736004293I dunno if it's even zoomers at this point. I'm beginning to think we're starting to see alphoomer teenagers make their way here. I think the oldest gen alphas are 16 now. Fucked up really.
For me it's the toy store with the ball pit.Or the house of the collector with the kino western ost.
>>736007053https://youtu.be/wd7LjYksLDoThat ought to shut up the tranny trying to spread hate about this game in this very thread.
>>736007053Honestly I wasn't as big a fan of Al's Penthouse as I expected because it kinda just felt like Andy's House but not as interesting since it didn't even have the multiple layers like Andy's House did. I do like the toy barn and space land though.
>>736005756>You gotta admit, the rest of the game isn't on the quality level of the first levelI ain't gotta admit shit >Neighborhood >Construction Yard>Alleys and Gullies>Al's Toybarn>Al's Penthouse>Tarmac TroubleAll quality stages
>>736004513Did you pick up the green rapid fire laser from the corner?
Pic related, remember playing the absolute shit out of this game as a kid, tried it again a few years ago and it was fucking awful, every track is like driving on ice
>>736004523I dunno, cartoons like Arthur are still solid
>replay old game from my childhood>soundtrack is even better than I rememberhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt9_UNTF57c
>>736004719>banger Means a good song, not a good game retard
Theres a few games i think aged worse than i remember but many others i played still feel great.>ratchet deadlocked>jak 2>jak x combat racing>basically any pokemon gameThese all are worse games than i remember them being.Jak 2 is the most blatant use of a pointlessly tacked on open world ive ever seen. Haven city is a giant labyrinth with nonsensical design, and the story routinely had you drive places that take 5 full minutes to get to.Its awful.Ratchet deadlocked is basically just a horde shooter designed for coop, the story barely matters at all. Many missions feel like multiplayer objectives retrofitted for single player, UYA had this problem as well.Jak X is extremely repetitive and the AI tracks just arent that fun.
>>736008683The AI and the tracks*
>>736004513When I was a kid I used to play gunstar heroes on hard and expert and be able to beat it easily. I replayed it again recently and got completely btfo on hard mode.
>>736004153The only time this is valid is when you revisit a Wii game that uses pointer controls. The novelty wore off and it just becomes a hassle, happened to me when I replayed Endless Ocean. Even worse trying to get that shit to work on emulator.
>>736004337>>736004153This game used to legit scare the fuck out of me as a kid. And I can see why, it's still a really scary game.
>>736004248If you hate SA explain now.
>>736004670Both of those are extremely kino though.
Most old games hold up well and shame modern shit. Of course, there are old shitty games too.
>>736004153
It's the same
>>736004670>4kNo, it doesn't need 4k. It needs a good artstyle. Also, if you played KH2 after this, it's hard to go back to KH1.

>>736004153This shit hits me in weird esoteric ways when I see this, I knew even when I played it when I was young there was something strange about it. Just looked at some playthrough, feels like an acid trip.
>>736004153Kids have shit taste and often you were stuck with like 2-3 games so you had to make due with the games you had even if they were garbage
>Replay Paper Mario 2>Jokes aren't that funny anymore>Notice more flaws in the writing>Game can be easily broken apart and level design relies too much on backtrackingBumped down the game from what I considered my most favourite game down to a 7/10 or 8/10 game. And no I don't even consider the first game to be better even.
>>736004153My 9 year old ass loved that batman and robin movie too. Kids will like anything no matter how dogshit they are
>Replay my childhood favourite game>It's just as kino as I remember it being
Got this game from a friend back then.It fucking sucked super hard but i still loved playing the shit out of it
>>736004739>KH2, one of the best games of all timeIt's not even a game. It's just a "press X to win" simulator with cutscenes.

>>736004293That’s Toy Story 2 the movie tie in game. It definitely existed. It was a 3D collect-a-thon game when those were popular and everyone was still figuring out what to do with 3 dimensions for video games.

a demo disc was enough for me to be happy.
Toy story 2, Jackie Chan stunt master, croc 1 and 2, crash bandicoot, yep these were great ps era games
>>736009980The game was being developed before toy story 2 the movie released, maybe that's why it's strange
>>736004153BUZZ! OVER HERE!
>>736009650Thanks, Gemini.

>>736004474Games today are fucking dogshit, what happened? Did developers lower their standards? It doesn't add up. >>736009769It is the opposite. Media that I cringed at in highschool is entirely palatable now. I noticed that regular well adjusted adults never cringe. If they think something is stupid or childish, they simply do not concern themselves with it. You are simply autistic.
>>736004248I'm assuming you mean III and Vice City, because I liked them at the time but San Andreas made them really not fun to play.
>>736010764:heart:

>>736007218>Tarmac Trouble Also a candidate for best music.https://youtu.be/3MijajDCCOw
Don’t agree with your pic but it happened to me when replaying:Dead space. The game is too easy. It’s just a bland action shooter and it’s incredibly ugly.Crash bandicoot 1-3. The games felt tedious to replay and all the vehicle missions suck.Spyro 1-3. Made me hate collectathons. They feel more like chores than games.Sonic adventure 1 and 2. These games are legitimately awful.Prince of Persia SoT and WW. Just way too repetitive and boring. Parkours slow and combat’s gets eh pretty quickly.
>>736011121Also fable 1 and 2.And the GTA games.
>>736004153dumb zoomer
>>736011121Holy shit taste
>>736004153It's because the mechanics have become familiar with you. Enjoyment of a game is directly linked to the number of first experiences the brain encounters while playing it. This is also why childhood is more enjoyable than adulthood (and why your perception of time speeds up) because you encounter more novel experience. All gamedevs need to do to make a game good is do something new with it, yet publishers won't let them do anything that isn't a proven success.
>>736011213Triggered
>>736004153TrueBy the 2nd stage you realise that every map has the same fucking objectivesIts just lazy game designthe stages are pretty cool tho
>>736006924Check out Toy Story 3 on Steam. It has a level that's just that game. I boot it up every couple of years just to play it.https://youtu.be/XuRo3vnchQw
Spyro 1 gets better every time I replay it. The impeccable art design with its gorgeous fairy tale atmosphere and subtle worldbuilding, the goated Copeland soundtrack, the cozy collectathon gameplay that never outstays its welcome. Truly the greatest 3d platformer of all time.
>>736011348Yes, by your shit taste. It's like watching someone drive around in a Ferrari, then go back to some cheap Soviet era lemon while calling the Ferrari shit.
>>736004553That is because configuring DOSbox is beyond 90% of people and getting early windows games to run often requires tools like dgvoodoo2 and winedvm (16 bit installers yo) Vs "lmao duck station". Plus "what the fuck my xinput only controller doesn't work bugged game fug dis".

>>736011725Buzz lightyear of star command. I have an OEM disc of it buried somewhere as it came with a PC we got back in the day.
>>736004153I used to play the PC version of this game with my dad. We got stuck at the Zurg boss fight after the elevator level. Neither of us knew at the time but it was due to a bug caused by a high framerate that made the fight almost impossible. Since we thought it was a skill issue, we searched the internet for tips and tricks on how to beat the boss but to no avail.Years later, I returned to the game with the knowledge of said bug and was able to beat Zurg with ease. I excitedly told my father but he didn't really care all too much. I suppose that figures, but my childhood memories of playing the game with him are some of my fondest.
>>736011865Too many non platforming levels and said levels are not as good in quality Vs the platforming levels. Hot Coco for example.
>>736011725I remember that game, it was pretty bad lol
>>736011725>>736011914I tried BLoSC recently having only played the Toy Story 2 Action Game as a kid and it was almost like some shitty time-trial thing where you were racing villains through levels? Seemed way shittier than the sandbox-style levels of TS2.
>>736004153speak for yourself, I only played bangers like the Lego games and kino Star Wars games
>>736011964Ah, yeah the water levels, never thought much about them they weren't bad just kinda unfair, I guess they didn't like the auto runner levels either, my least favorite were the bike levels but I still enjoyed them.
>>736004252Bro thats gay and indicative of deep emotional issues.
>>736008871nta but the overabundance of minigame missions makes the game fall short for me
>>736004153That Toy Story game is still fun imoMost 3D platformer/adventure games are kind of braindead in the gameplay department (outside the rare few that widely recognized as good) but they're usually serviceable enough.I'm playing through later childhood games as we speak. Currently doing playthrough of Hitman Codename 47. It was kind of widely recognized as the more simplified version that Contracts did better but I'm still enjoying it. But even back then Hitman didn't really start coming together by 2.
>>736004153If this post makes anyone want to play this again and you want to do so on Windows, some guy made a patch that un-fucks it on modern machines.https://github.com/AndetSTK/ToyStory2Fix

>>736004153Funny, my family was poor so all of the PlayStation games I had as a kid were cheap used games that fucking sucked. I emulated a lot of PS1 titles for the first time about 6 years ago and I thought you story 2 was a pretty good game, as far as collectathon platformers go. The n64 version of toy story 2 sucks, no denying that.
>>736012053>>736013423The way it worked was you were chasing the bosses to the ends of the levels and if you got there first they'd have their health reduced before you fight them. It wasn't really a time limit though, you could just ignore them and dick around at your own pace. Each level also had a proper time trial mode and this sort of scavenger hunt mission where you had to find all the hidden robot parts to beat it.It's a decent enough licensed game, but it's one of those licensed games where I think you'd only really enjoy it if you watched the cartoon as opposed to just enjoying it for what it is.
>>736011865Warped is my guilty pleasure, 1 is fun but very simple2 is objectively the best out of the trilogy, tons of great stages, movement tech, secrets etc.but 3 is what I remember the fondest, the good stages that are there are really fun, like the pyramid, arabian and medieval stages, even the bonus stages, but then there's the atrocious flying levels, motorcycle levels and to some extent, the water levels. New powers, secrets you unlock with those new powers, it's just a fun experience.I feel the same about Crash Bash as I did with Warped, they're flawed games but tons of fun.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wue31LZdk0The CD quality music makes Toy Story 2 one of the best video games ever to exist, on its soundtrack alone. And on top of that, it's a great game.
>>736019974The CD audio is so fucking good. I wonder why the Windows version had such shitty compressed versions, despite coming on a CD.

>>736004153When I was a kid, I wasn't capable of understanding that a game was shit until I hit a certain age. Instead, if a game had awful controls or was buggy or had bad hit boxes I just assumed it was too hard which made me play it more. I probably had hundreds of hours in this terrible Toy Story 2 gameboy game with this miserable Castlevania 1 delay on the jumps just because I thought it was super hard and wanted to beat it.The first time I realized a game was bad was when I played Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly on PS2 after loving the original trilogy. I was never the same. I miss the innocence.

>>736009203I borrowed a Latam bootleg from a friend who went onto becoming a popular young doctor in Mexico, he was kidnapped by a cartel and forced to be a medic before they dumped him god-knows-where. I hate the new music in DB games so fucking much, a lot of old themes are gone in the name of generic techno-rock, I know like 75% of the iconic setpiece stuff was "creatively" arranged or just outright stolen melodies, but it had soul, and evoked the magic of loading up random DBZ roms into ZSNES and other bad emulators as a teenager
>>736009724NTA but that anon is right. For the many normalfags who played good games like punch out or super mario bros 3, there are many people who were unlucky and grew up playing absolute trash shovelware that doesn't hold up at all today. It's the same reason why you can see some retards defend low effort poorly designed garbage like UFO 50, who will then seethe when you actually point them to masterfully designed NES games from the era that shitty indie slop failed to capture. Not every game was made equal and many childhood titles suck ass today because they were also shit back then. It's not even a matter of games aging. They were just trash. JRPGs are also a good example
>>736031626I remember buying The Dream Master (at mini kinoplex THE WHEREHOUSE) because I liked Nemo (arcade) and the movie, even as a kid I knew this was a where-the-fuck-do-I-go game, but I did that a lot with birthday money for games our local rental place never had, but at least it was used. Most video stores had about 50% of what you actually wanted to play until vidya renting became more mainstream/legal, so if you were REALLY curious, you sometimes had to take a chance on something that was shithttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv-ghjDQ-ZsThe arcade one is fun with a friend, and I've only seen one in the wild once at a Straw Hat PizzaAlso, this existshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRUuW0QaULg

>>736033125Because it was never properly updated for native support for modern controllers. There are patches that fix this.
>>736004153I really liked X-Men Legends as a kid, but when I tried it after growing up, I realized that it's an incredibly shallow game all around. But it was fun to see heroes blow things up back then.

>>736036003Didn't play this growing up, but it's a great /vr/ rec. Games like this, which had a solid gimmick, didn't have it overstay its welcome, and never iterated on it again are really fascinating. Like the game is great, just didn't get the sales or recognition it needed.Somewhat reminded me of Sin and Punishment, with the stilted dub, story you have to read a manual on or infer based on context, and just the overall arcadey atmosphere.
>>736004153I had this happen with every 3D GTA game but I actually realized the best way to play GTA is by trying to survive max stars with a full loadout and your favorite car. Most of the missions in GTA fucking suck.

>>736038554Honestly, it's more fun seeing them all as time capsules of game conventions and what was cool at the time.
>>736038583yeah. for example I was playing the psone bugs bunny game it is mega jank but i ahd a lot of fun. the visuals are pretty alright for the time. so is the arale game and the psp yakuza games. it is fun to see how they get around their own restrictions.

>>736004153You were a kid. You're no longer a kid.Do you ever ask yourself why games released today are shit to you? Do you ever ask yourself why adults thought games were a waste of their time, when you were a kid?Come on man, you gotta be able to piece this one together on your own.
>>736004248PS2 GTAs were fun as a kid because they were just a fun sandbox, they suck as an adult because you have to force yourself through the trash story missions.
>>736043774>pedestrian riot>weapon set 1>infinite ammo>spawn a rhinoyup it's gaming time
>>736043636>Do you ever ask yourself why adults thought games were a waste of their time, when you were a kid? That's entirely different from knowing most new games are kusoge, they grew up with different values, people that grew up with the radio thought the same about tv, same with those that grew up with none of that, they can't find the value on videogames because there was nothing to validate them, overtime some people broke through and proved to the world that playing videogames was often a better experience and could bear results if done properly.New games are standardized, there's almost no experimentation anymore, the only thing devs change are graphics, it's the main focus and instead of developing something fun they just try to make something visually appealing.
I played this when it came out with my little brother. He was 8 and I was 13, we really liked it and it was the N64 version. A few months ago I decided to play it again. This time I played it on PS1 emulator. I had fun, its pretty easy and at times frustrating. I'd never recommend it, but at least I finished it. To this day I haven't been able to complete Witcher 3 and RDR2 because they are boring movies to me. At least Toy Story 2 is pure gameplay. A solid 2/5 which is mediocre, but still playable.
If you can't enjoy a few minutes of Mario 64 every so often, you might just be a jaded old faggot.

>>736044808Nah this life is pretty bad and I think the last fleeting joy I'll get is when I know it's coming to an end. I mostly play video games to drown out my own thoughts these days.
what a piece of shit. how did I even play this trash as a kid, I have no idea
>>736044994It's linear and you were the target demographic.
The only thing that feels different and there's no going back to is length. It felt like you used to play the one videogame for hours and hours and months. Either from just playing and jumping around and looking for secrets, replaying, or just straight up not being able to beat it.Boot up a childhood game now and you'll be done in an hour or two.It might be a good game still but it's shocking to think about.
>>736045142Having Spring and Winter breaks, Summer Break, and even sick days made a difference. You practically got married to your games, especially if you were from a family where you could only get like one or two every other month.
>>736009176It has the right amount. I never liked the time relic stuff.
>replay game from your childhood>it's better than when you were a kid
I replay Perfect Dark on occasion and it's still solid, but the varied weapon selection isn't anywhere as cool since the automatics dwarf a lot of the guns and all of them are kinda dry other than maybe the Laptop Gun.

>>736004153I loved pretty much every game I played as a kid, besides Minecraft for whatever reason. My favorites were Fable 3 and Prototype 2 I’m an ‘07 zoomer but I’m well aware that both games are regarded to be the worst in their franchise.I played Toy Story 3 as well, though in all honesty it is a pretty good game. The only game I’ve gone back to recently and had an absolutely miserable time with is The Force Unleashed, which was a lot harder than I remembered. I couldn’t get past the Shaak Ti fight. Also it ran like shit but maybe it’s because I was playing on PC?
>>736004153Pic unrelated
>>736051410Same, I still love almost every game that I played as a child. There are of course a few exceptions, like recently I played a PS1 game called Porsche Challenge. I remember liking that game a lot when I was in elementary school, but it doesn't really hold up. The driving is very simplistic and not very satisfying. To get the best turning in corners you have to tap the handbrake button, but the handbrake is so oversensitive that it's almost impossible to get it right. So it doesn't feel rewarding because of how inconsistent it feels. Also the tracks I feel are very boring and there aren't many of them either. You are forced to play the same tracks but with very small variations, which might have felt mind-blowing back down but now I just hate it.
>>736050674Peppa! How goes it?

>>736004153Pac-Man World 3. To be fair I played the DS version which had less combat, which is a good thing because the combat is repetitive.

>Did we just have lower standards? Most of the games i liked playing are not even being made anymore, from the double A development side or not even from the indie scene. So how can my standards be low if nobody ever attempted to design something better? or in the rare instance that they did it was inferior?
>>736060428This is why zoomers want everything to be remade, because their shitty brains and reflexes can't adapt to anything unless it's standardized to how things are "now". Games are not better.

>>736004153My tastes have changed. There were lots of PS2 games I grew up with a kid that I think are terrible now and tons of games I wouldnt have touched as a kid that I love as an adult
>>736063905>it really set a high bar for licenced video gamesFor childrens ones maybe. There are a few rare exception licensed games in other areas in the early 2000s too which many people missed/failed to pick up on because it was overloaded with forgettable stuff. But i suppose it was a rare one for the PS1 library or whatever. Then again i think some shovelware made for movies is like five times above the quality of a modern indie game so thats just me. More effort went into presentation at the very least and contain usually higher production values. They usually just suffer from dull gameplay even in the worst case scenarios.
>>736009769>argai the prophecy was on tv when I was a kid>get dvd set several years later>it still holds uptime traveling french kino
>>736004153I find that most of the people who have this perception were the kind of people who played licensed tie-in games, sports games, and "tech showoff" games (ex 2D era games with pre-rendered graphics). The three overlap a lot in demographics. Also people who did no research and bought solely based upon the box art. People who actually did their homework on what they were buying, and who cared about gameplay instead of "It has popular thing in it! Must conform!" tend to still like the games they played because they were always good.
>>736064257>For childrens ones maybe.that's a fair caveat and a well made pointalso yeah on the PS1 or equivalent such as N64toy story 2 on the PS1 was still a damn great platformer and it had some really neat fucking levels
