Let's talk about games where you build fortifications and defend them from enemies.
RTS games with extensive base building are welcome.
No girls allowed!
>>
any game with a "stockpile" system is instantly boring as fuck
>>
>>736011554
Isn't putting farms OUTSIDE of your castle walls an apocalyptically bad idea?
Because the first thing the enemy hits is the farm that is supposed to feed the castle during the siege.
Yes, I know that's how it worked in the Middle Ages, because IRL farm fields are REALLY FUCKING BIG, but that's a videogame.

>love chokepoint battles in RTSs and defense games
>10 times out of 10 the enemy AI doesn't know how to handle chokepoints and just turtles even though they're the attackers
>game compensates by spawning enemies or bad events behind your defensive lines
what game gets chokepoint defense battles right? best I've found is the total war warhammer series. wish company of heroes did them better.

Unironically, Warcraft 1.
The game actually enourages troop formations and kiting the enemy into chokepoints, because the AI is some bullshit.

it's cheaper to rebuild a farm than a castle
it's easier to contain a fire on a farm than one that spreads within the castle that could reach food or weapon stockpiles. where you build the farms directs where battles are fought. defend the farms so you dont have to defend the castle which needs the resources found on the farm. sure you can have one farm or something in your castle but in general you want to build things outside your castle. what you want in your castle are loads of wood cutters. If you build your castle and walls correctly you can turn on and off labor from your wood cutters to send in free and huge waves of melee defenders. Same can be done with hunting posts and to quickly provide archers to defend the castle.

Castles have stockpiles, anon. You're not expecting fresh supplies from the outside outside of coastal sieges unless you're also under a blockade.

reminds me of playing starcraft against my brother
>he always plays zerg
>spends 80% of the game doing nothing but building a shit load of defense towers
>I fucking suck at dealing with them because of how he spaces them out
I try to do what he does sometimes but I get steamrolled. is there a hidden art to defense tower placement or do I just really fucking suck at dealing with them?
starcraft 1 btw so no broken siege flyer bullshit from 2
>>
>>736012432
I beat that scenario recently (on the nintendo switch version). It's easiest to manage pretty much any map by closing the park and deleting every path then repaving the entire park for a 2-3 wide path everywhere. So guests dont get overcrowded or lost. having 1 tile paths leads to guests complaining and failing the mission around year 3.

I love that map, problem is after one or two assaults the AI gets confused and either stops making new units or bunches them all up at the base forever
>>
God I wish there were more games like Stronghold.
I will never forgive how shit #3 turned out
Why hasn't anyone else even attempted this formula? It's kino
>>
>>736012032
That particular castle was designed for a screenshot, the actual castles you build in this game are usually more compact and you usually try to put farms and orchards behind your castle

Carriers, Battlecruisers and Guardians.
But to answer your question; you just suck. Static defense is only an early-game deterrence.
>>
>>736012519
Defense towers are hard countered by any sort of half-competent artillery.
First thing I've learned when trying to play Warcraft 3 is "never bother with defense towers, they are a waste of resources and get hardcountered by a bunch of catspults".

I am obligated to mention Cataclismo as it makes full use of the "lego"-like building mechanics, it is very well made with copy-paste functionality and ctrl+z.
The building aspect is very nice.

It is therefore a shame the same can't be said for the gameplay as that is very basic. It's serviceable and relatively cheap. So if you're a fan of making castles this is a good game.

I tried the game but I hated how the game basically wants you to build your shit as high as possible since it's the most efficient way of creating sturdy foundations for some fucking reason
>>

Well, I realized something was off once I was fighting my way through a... modern map of Poland.
Sure, game.
>>
>>736012881
The scaling is a bit much, yeah.
A single block has like 6hp and once upgraded to the next tier it gets a whooping 150hp and then another 300hp on stage 3. (or something to that effect, I can't remember the exact increases)

Warzone2100?
Fucking 3/4 of the tech tree is base defense, and you can (and should) fill any space on the map not strictly needed for troops movement with long range ones.
>>
>>736012619
Towers are there to make your base a not completely free-walk-in, without paying an upkeep cost for it. They don't need to be able to defeat the main army, just to prevent 2 grunts from waltzing in and forcing you to move your actually army to deal with it.
And the human manaburn tower is absolutely worth it against certain heroes.
>>
>>736013550
Eh, more often than not, the tower damage is so pitiful, those two grunts/enemy hero will wreck my all peons anyway, so I have to move my main force anyway.

I had the PC one, but from a superficial look the PS1 version doesn't seem much different.
The studio died and made it open source in its last breath tho, you can get for free now - and there even an in-browser version in case you are on a PC that doesn't allow installs: https://play.wz2100.net/

in OG stronghold it was fine to build farms outisde. If the enemy spends units to attack the cheap farms you will just shoot them down

in Crusaders you have to wall everything because it's so fucking easy to burn everything to the ground even from a long distance. Not sure if the remake fixed this shit but it was annoying as fuck how easily fire could spread and how hard it was to stop it
