I've only played four and I didn't beat them because they weren't fun. Almost all of these are from the 80s and games back then were super short, but got a lot of playtime (or quarters) out of kids by designing screens to be impossible to react to and heavily limiting continues and checkpoints, forcing players to memorize the entire game before they could beat it. They also gave players limited amounts of control over their character, so the window for success was precise and not always intuitive. The name of the game was to just keep moving forward, dying, trying something new, writing it down so you don't forget, and repeat like 80 times before you win. There's a reason Gen Xers dropped video games entirely or still play those old games today and never moved on to the actually good games of the 90s and early 00s. They're a different breed. Their brains are still probably full of exactly what you need to do to beat these games, they can't fit anything else in there. They probably look at new games and don't understand why players aren't dying and starting from the beginning over and over again.

You've got this bizarre logic in your head that is multipart. 1) developers never ever do bullshit stuff in their difficulty design, and 2) that modes that remove mechanics the entire game is built around somehow makes it "truer".

Here is an actual, real-world example. I want you to answer this honestly.

In Hitman: Absolution, they have the "Instinct Meter". When you have stolen the clothes of a particular enemy type, all the people of the same enemy type can see through that disguise. Street cops can see through your stolen street cop uniform, other janitors can see through your stolen janitor outfit, etc. By using some of your Instinct, you are able to temporarily pass by guards who would normally detect you (holding down the Instinct button as you walk past them will do things like pull your hat lower over your face etc).

In the hardest difficulty, they have completely removed the Instinct system entirely. What that means is that the game is borderline impossible to beat stealthily on the hardest difficulty without aggressively exploiting glitches and engine/AI quirks, because the game, the levels, and all the enemy placement was designed with you having the Instinct meter to pass through.

Does this sound like it would be the "true, hardcore way" to play the game and let you "really appreciate the level design"? Or does this sound like a bullshit exercise in tedium that plays against the game's entire design?
