The great Sonic debate
the main gameplay of both games kind of suck. so i think sonic adventure 1 wins out, because at least the world is comfy to walk around in and its kind of neat.
2 is functionally better but I hate the treasure hunt stages so much that I virtually never play 2, while I have replayed 1 like a dozen times.

Also a lot of the stages were less memorable and more generic.The only thing SA1 has going for it is that the campaigns are separated, so you can just do Sonic's story and ignore the rest if you want, whereas you're forced to do the mech and treasure hunt stages in SA2. But this also means that in SA1 if you want to do the other campaigns, you're constantly forced to watch the same damn unskippable cutscenes for every character again.

I think the treasure hunting stages are overhated. Are they as good as speed stages? Well no. But this was also the era of 3D platformers all being collectathons. The only crime of the treasure hunt stages is that they're not sonic stages. As for the mech stages, they're okay for what they are. Just would've been better if eggman/tails could've gained more speed like omega did
