"Real" and "Good" are not the same things. A game should look good -- it should be pleasing to look at, clearly show what's going on, and not strain the eye. Visuals are a tool to assist the player engage in the gameplay, not a goal on their own. Too many modern games miss that and think the shiny colors make up for not actually being fun. It's a natural result of the game industry being infested with people who want to make movies instead.

It's not necessary, in fact some games don't need it, however "distracts" is pointless. If the game itself is good, nobody gives a shit what the graphics looks like. However a graphical style that matches your game can help immersion. The only time it "distracts" is if the game already rates from bad to mediocre.
