More technical, bigger item variety, gameplay styles through characters, stage options (you can disable gimmicks if you want), actual music, exhuding soul from the menus, UI, exaggerated personalities they gave to the Mario cast etc. Imo the only area it fell off compared to the first game is the lack of a hype announcer scream when you score a goal, and team leader mega strikes never being worthy to use because they're easy to block. (teammates ones are actually fine, like hammer bro, dry bones, bird and boo being the most useful) In the first game, a successful megastrike was a guaranteed 2 points goal, in Charged the potential to land 6 goals is impressive and funny at first but human or CPU it's just easy to counter even at max speed. (unless you cheat by blocking the wiimote sensor)One of the downsides of characters being so varied was the obvious imbalance in usefulness and cheese potential. A good player with Waluigi, two boos and one strong shooter or dry bones would be an absolute menace with all the potential tricks and glitches that could be exploited from almost anywhere on the field with the Z button to score goals, but that added a whole new layer of prediction and positioning etc which raised the skill ceiling by a lot. Characters like toad could deke and jump above the kritter goalie, boo could literally phase through him at the right timing, dry bones, daisy and Waluigi could teleport straight behind him to score. I truly love and miss this game

Galaxy 1 has atmosphere that 2 lacks. The comet observatory as a hub adds a qualia that the soulless mario ship and level select menu lacks.
