planescape is the ultimate midwit bait. the story is actually retarded but it's written with a lot of words so people who struggle to read anything denser than a twitter post think it's super intelligent. first the themes are total nonsense. what is the game actually about? one of the main themes is people who contradict their nature. this sounds like an interesting theme to explore, but the way the game handles it is just "the lore says character x is supposed to be y but actually this one is z," which is completely inane. another theme is the power of belief, which also sounds like something you can make deep insights about, but in practice it's stoner tier "what if I believed a seed was a tree really hard and it actually started growing?" dreck. the game does bring up some interesting questions about memory, like is it moral to punish a person with amnesia for crimes he doesn't remember committing, and whether a serial killer with no memory of his killing would keep killing anyway, but it basically glosses over them in favor of the aforementioned magical non-sequiturs.second, the actual narrative sucks. the story is presented as a mystery, but you never get to figure anything out for yourself. the entire game is just going from one character to another who explains everything for you. at some point you find out that two of your companions knew everything all along but didn't feel like telling you. pretty much all of the dialogue is characters babbling at you without saying anything important. at one point you meet some guy who does the whole "everyone but me is retarded and should admit that they're stupid" and you can even get +1 wisdom for agreeing with him.
thanks a.i

>>736061831An entire game, story, soundtrack, design, characters: Done
>>736068287> midwitopinion discarded, go back to twitter>>736068349Torment's combat is perfectly fine. You have seven specialized fighters with TNO having a role on his own, and items accommodating them, so you have a guy who tanks, a guy who kites and shoots people from afar, a big flaming guy who shoots fireballs etc., contrary to BG3 where you can respec anyone into anything. I've cleared every "hard" combat encounter there and the amount of things you can do to win and enjoy it very much depends on your ability to actually understand words and letters in a game, like Arcanum or VtMB. The only good parts of BG3's combat (trying to do tabletop rules in a computer RPG is a waste) were verticality and terrain, which have pretty much zero place in Torment except some battles in Curst where it slides into Carceri. The only things I'd want from a remake are that Lustmord arrangement, restoration of some cut things a la Unfinished Business and full voice narration to turn the whole thing into a nice radio play. >>736068894Sorta, it's not something I'd want to replay a dozen times but the narrative is something AAA games still can't hope to achieve because they keep thinking it's some six season-long Netflix slop instead of a video game.

>>736057592Hated the ending which ruined it for me
>>736068349>>736069124The combat isn't the problem. The foundation and mechanics are there for a great RPG but the encounter design was terrible because the game was rushed and their major priorities were the story and art first and foremost so they couldn't iron out the combat encounters and designs so you're stuck with terrible boring mind numbing fights. You pretty much just fight hordes of melee base enemies that just swing at you with no strategy or thought and the few mages you do fight are barely a threat and they never cast any powerful spells like they would in Baldur's Gate.
>>736062141I was very disappointed with the endings in colony ship. All that fucking adventure only for there to be one screen with 3 lines of text. Not even going in depth about the planet or aliens on it.
>>736073052Yeah, that's actually a valid criticism. It's funny how Arcanum, being one of the more variable and open-form games out there, ran into the exact same problem.
>>736073098There was some in-depth info in the terminal at the ship's bridge. The aliens also think of the ship as a weird moon.
>>736067096isn't planescape largely ignores the material plane? yeah the idea is that all planes are interconnected, so it's possible to treat it as all-encompassing crossover setting, but the actual content explicitly does not specify what material plane actually isguess what i'm trying to say is that planescape's universe is outer planes, as opposed to a multiverse of every setting available
>>736067254If memory serves me right, you get to learn a lot about those 2 incarnations through>all the shit practical set up along the way>all the shit paranoid tore down by being paranoidThey are not active voices in your head, and so that's the only way they were 'revealed'
>>736068894After hearing about it for 10+ years entirely from /v/ and actually giving it a try back in 2024, I'll have to say the answer is yesI pirated it in 2019 and it was on my desktop waiting to be played but I never touched it for some reason or another. I think if I had tried it then or any time before playing Baldur's Gate 1/2 and Disco Elysium I would've dropped it very fast since I wouldn't have understood the combat and the amount of reading required would've put me off immensely. It's not a game for everyone, and honestly you might want to dip your toes in Baldur's Gate 1 or any other CRPG that uses RtwP (Icewind Dale, Pillars of Eternity etc) so you're not learning the combat system as you go. While there are maybe 20 combat encounters in the entire game, it's good to know it so you're know getting stuck since you had no clue how to interact with it and also be prepared for a LOT of reading.
>>736056596I am just clueless prime and still don't understand who the Nameless One was before he became Nameless One, and I hate that you could only lie to Ravel that you love her, while she was one of the nicest girls to Nameless One, but it was era of shitty tsunderes so they obviously pushed the rat thiefling. >>736074905>any time before playing Baldur's Gate 1/2One of the big issues with playing Planescape as is in the current year is that you're likely to miss all the ways it plays with Infinity Engine stereotypes. Sure, the fact that economy is based around copper pieces or wall-of-runes hiding behind every other NPC might not seem relevant in the current year. But everything from setting to main plot to all the random elements was derived from the core conceit of being not like other RPGs.

>>736075127> I am just clueless prime and still don't understand who the Nameless One was before he became Nameless OneIt's never exactly stated, but it can't be "started the Blood War"-tier bad since when you find out your actual name, it's just "alright, finally, thank God" and not much good or bad. My headcanon is that TNO was just a somewhat normal guy on the evil-er side who one day got fucked by the understanding that he will die one day and become one of these petitioning souls and tried everything he could to somehow escape it only to end up having his wish be granted by a fucking night hag. Whatever his greatest sin was while he was still mortal, it is far eclipsed by the sheer amount of misery snowballing that occured afterwards.
>>736075570But still, what is bad on not wanting to die? I doubt he was the first immortal, in an universe spanning planes - there are liches, vampires, lot of beings that try to escape the eternal fire of lower planes. >>736087650You can always pirate it and form your own opinion but it really is a weak videogame with nothing going for it. The setting is even more of an uninteresting kitchen sink, the gameplay is basically the inverse of planescape: instead of RTwP and tons of massed encounters it's turn-based and has almost no combat encounters at all. Both the story and the companions feel overly verbose in a way that wasn't nearly as grating in planescape but in numenera feels like genuine bid to pad out word count in almost everything you do, talk to or interract with. The story itself doesn't exactly know what it wants to be beyond the original "You lost your memories, something is chasing you, figure it out". In last 5 minutes you find out your ending is decided almost exclusively by your alignment and if you pick an option that doesn't fit it, you get a bad ending. That being said I haven't played it after they added an ooze character and changed a bunch of stuff, so I don't know if the game improved since.

You would think you were royalty based on the number of loyal subjects that lay stinking and festering upon the cart that carried you." "Your body was somewhere in the middle of the heap, sharing its fluids with the rest of the mountain of corpses." Dhall broke into another violent fit of coughing, finally catching his breath minutes later. "Your 'seneschal' Pharod was, as always, pleased to accept a few moldy coppers to dump the lot of you at the Mortuary gate."
>>736088112There isn't a single video game for which you can't point at something in another medium and reductively say>This is that, but worse.with no substantiation.
>>736075850Well, yeah, that's the tragedy. Those who are of good nature don't have to fear death precisely because things they're aligned with will lead them to a good afterlife. Some others know they're doing wrong things, and try to fix that, but they only know evil and so will do more evil, burying them further.
>>736056982Dark Souls, the way it's told is unique to the vidya medium and it's a commentary about life, death, acceptance, time and how it shapes humanity. Kino doesn't come close to properly describe it.

I wasn't aware I was supposed to read every flavor text to piece together a story until too late in the game and by then I just didn't care.

The dialogue in this game is so good bros. Enormous gravitas without being cringe or emo. Modern writers could never. Vhailor and Coaxmetal are two of my favourite characters.> "The multiverse is your enemy? Why?"> THE MULTIVERSE BREATHES. IT GROWS. IT STAGNATES. IT FORGES ITS CHAINS AROUND THE PLAINS LINK BY LINK. IN TIME, EVEN ENTROPY MAY BE CHAINED.> "And you're opposed to chaining entropy?"> WHEN A THING SEALS ITSELF AGAINST ITS OWN DESTRUCTION, IT MERELY DIES A DIFFERENT DEATH.> "So you're saying immortality is just a different kind of death?"> IMMORTALITY IS ONLY A WORD. ALL THAT EXISTS CAN DIE. EVERY LIVING THING HAS A WEAPON AGAINST WHICH IT HAS NO DEFENSE. TIME. DISEASE. IRON. GUILT.Besides Legacy of Kain and Cultist Simulator I've never managed to find any games with this style of writing. Some of these sentences are burned into my brain, never get tired of them. Modern writers always feel the need to insert stupid witty quips and other out of place sentences that completely ruin the atmosphere and immersion.

>>736056596Planescape is basically a visual novel and almost all good vidya stories are VNs bcs they dont have to hamfist incohesive gameplay systems into the pacing and the presentation outside of that i think Legacy of Kain and Pathologic are good. but past that... its getting slim. you could say that JRPGs present their "stories" in a cohesive manner but their stories are not really ambitious and to formulaic. though i did like FF9 and Grandia a lot i would not call them ambitious stories.

do you even Pathologic, nigga?
>>736056596>>736056775>>736056982This game looks like fucking shit. So it's bad. Don't care how great your 'story' is if it looks like ugly cgi slop. The Japanese invented the Visual Novel so we have no need for silly things like 'gameplay'. Only Visuals, Audio, and Text. Planescape is a failure.

>>736056596>This is the greatest video game story ever told. Nothing comes close.Meanwhile ranked in literature terms it's like a lower-mid tier fantasy novel.I don't get why videogoymers equate story in games to game quality, this is obviously a subpar medium for narrative.
>>736096194Dark Souls 1 released in 2011, when the height of youtube content was 240p cat videos. The concept of appealing video essayists didn't even exist then.

>>736056982Depends on your classification. My gut reaction is Higurashi but that's a VN so it feels like cheating. In terms of using the strength of an interactive game as a medium of storytelling (so not text-based or script-based like a VN or moviegame would be), for me it has to be Deus Ex.Before you cry "That's a secondary pick", it has simple yet genius environmental storytelling that is intrinsically tied to gameplay. Everything in the world is interactable in some way and this can often reveal truths about a location or character just by looking at object placements and their properties. Also, can you name another game that has the sheer volume of world flavor text that is both highly entertaining AND highly thoughtful? A lot of games have written side content in the environment, like books, diaries, computer terminals etc, and they're almost always just massive loredumps that are obviously written by the writers for efficiency, and not natural fun reading that makes sense from the perspective of the person who wrote it. It's not fun to insert your own wikibait and planning notes into the story.Deus Ex was one of the first games to do both environmental and textual storytelling of these kinds and I still think it remains the best example at doing both well despite how many games tried to copy it and failed to understand what made it so great.

>>736056596>This is the greatest video game story ever told. Its good but Arcanum is betterHaving seen the impact of necromantic magic throughout the entire game, vengeful wraiths trapped in purgatory, all the NPCs whose spirits you meet as quest failsafes, even Virgil going over the edge, it silently prepares you for this final twist and last challengeBy letting the player abuse extremely immoral necromancy, it gives you a natural feeling of guilt that Kerghan may actually be correct in his claim that the dead can never truly rest as long as even a single sentient creature remains alive since anyone could painfully be called back at any time. Its a chilling thought and a very interesting resolution to a game that has a really cool setting and a lot of really likeable charactersSadly nobody has played it and the few who have rarely discuss it in greater detail beyond "Hehe gnome quest"
>>736125595I never really considered the necromancy angle in Arcanum, but it feels right, yeah. It's cool seeing Virgil (forma de zen) agreeing with Kerghan on some points. It's also just a fun story about people's grand plans and conspiracies to make a false prophecy just shattering by cornering someone into actually fulfilling that prophecy to a letter to avoid getting killed. I enjoyed Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind for the same reason, kinda.
>>736125595you'd think with so much magical power at his behest to wipe out all sentient life he'd instead use it to cut the magical ties of necromancysurely there's a way to permanently block it and cut the ties of every undead thing so nobody can resurrect another and all of the living dead find peace
So.. which CRPG has the best romance?

>>736113883First one is experimental game from artfags, equal parts clever and tedious. The writing is strong, and really the only reason one would engage with the original game.Second game is a remix of one of the routes, more refined and focused both narratively and mechanically. Great stuff all around, provided you like artsy stuff of course.Third game is a remix of another route, and way less involved mechanically, more of an adventure walky-talky game. A character assassination of Bachelor Dankovsky, holy fuck Polyhedron/Simon endings were awful. I feel like if you LOVED 2 you might HATE 3 for discarding the grime and friction that really defined previous games.
>>736063445Vhailor's Helm is also one of the most busted items in BG2
>>736130096This is a good breakdown of themif you do commit to playing 1, please do your best to at least stick through the bachelor and haruspex routes-- the changeling route doesn't have the same level of polish, but if you stick through those other two first you are likely to put up with the third route's bullshit just for the sake of finishing it and its probably actually worth doing at that point
