When did marketing your indie game become a matter of invoking more popular titles and sometimes even other indies?
>>
indies were never good
>>
Around 2018 probably.
>>
because thats the easiest way to communicate ideas, indie devs don't have the luxury of being one of the 10 games that kid will have for months until their parents buy something else, so they have to pitch their games well.

That's every indie developer since the beginning of time. "It's like Adventure, but with frogs!" They're children and can only steal other ideas.
>>
>>736119513
video games have existed for 50 years. what original idea is left?
>>
>>736119513
As an enjoyer of some of those titles, I played the demo of Mr. Sleepy Man and thought it was horrible. The worst part being how bad controlling the character felt.

Imagine needing to ride the coattails of a superior video game just to sell two copies (that is, if they even finish making the game).
Twitter "gamedevs" are a joke.

you haven't finished your game though

Nah if an indie even smells a hint of slop they go absolutely ape shit and get all 3 of their followers to harass you endlessly for using AI.

>See an indie game "inspired" by Parasite Eve
>It's literally the same UI and first enemy
I hate that indie devs have the Divine Sparkā„¢ but end up using it completely wrong

That's been a cornerstone of marketing since marketing was a thing.

>When did marketing your indie game become a matter of invoking more popular titles

This was always the case, old indie games were invoking popular NES games

Not sure how this works

It's funny how this feels more offensive than the 8-bit platformers and depression walking simulators from 2012

You will like my indie game if you played these games:
- Rapelay
- Princess Maker 2
- Daytona
- Tower of Trample
>>
>>736119560
>>736119852
FPS indies are pretty solid imo
>>
>>736125382
Love how putting out a game for sale no matter how shitty and derivative is considered a badge of honor. They taught this way of thinking to people during gamergate when women and transfolx were being invited into the industry.
>>
Oh I saw that game, I like the look of it.
>>
>>736126592
indies see an indie game post taking off so they all quote reply it with their own game, forced meme marketing if you will.
>>
>>736119513
Because everything has been done before.

I hate the notion of devs having to become algorithm slaves for marketing and especially abhor this type of post, but I think that naming other games to make potential fans understand what they're getting into at first glance is a good thing. As an example, both Metroid Prime and Super Mario Galaxy could be referred as 3D platformers. But the games couldn't be more different despite them belonging to the same genre technically.

It does feel like indie devs lack inspiration or try to ride the coattails of other successful games if not beloved classics by "associating" their slop to them, but to people who play a fuckton of games (surely the norm on /v/) being told immediately what you can expect saves a lot of time. For all the memes around roguelites or indie JRPG walking sims, a lot of games under these tags offer a variety of unique experiences depending on the niche they target or the fetish(es) of developers involved.

With that said end your fucking life twitter screencap poster, there's a non-zero chance this thread is just another ragebait created to make people waste their time
>>
>>736119513
Because it's easy and effective, especially in thisbday and age when everyone has the attention-span of a gold fish.
Just tell me what your games like, and I'll check it out if I enjoy those games.
Expecting people to watch a trailer and determine for themselves whether or not they'll like it is asking too much.
>>
sadly algorithms do shit like that now, you have to say what popular thing that they already know is like so they aren't "blind"
>>
NO MATTER HOW POOR PEOPLE ARE, WE CANNOT FORGET OUR DIGNITY
>>
>>736128059
you can't dab on people for not finishing their games when you still haven't released anything
>>
>>736119513
Because they don't have an established studio name or IP name to use
>>
Saying a game is like a game I like is the only marketing that can possibly work on me.
>>
>>736130412
same
>>
>>736119513
my game is just a derivative copy of x and y, but you cant call me soulless because im indie
>>
oversaturation of vidya
the music industry does the same thing to indie bands
"for fans of"
>>
>>736130190
You absolutely can. Just because Hollywood or AAA "finishes" their product doesn't mean it's good or that it should exist
>>
>>736119513
Soulless indie devs are those who are looking to make money instead of just for the sake of making a good game

So you kidnap a young girl and have to drive away with her, then you raise her but she becomes a mesugaki who bullies your dick if you don't do good enough in races?
>>
>>736119513
I dislike indie developers because their lack of output in the stealth-action genre outside the exception of real time tactics.
I will not ever treat them seriously as game developers until they start putting out games of the same caliber of at least early 2000s double A releases. Also utilizing light levels and sound propagation instead of line of sight detection, not crucial but it is preferred. There's still ways to utilize line of sight.
What they're attempting right now in RE style survival horror and may have reached the same levels of early mid 2000s double A development in some regards if we're judging some newer releases. But that's also a cop out in terms of design because it doesn't rely on having to program competent enemy AI, just basic functions for you to walk back as you shoot the enemies.
The same is true for things like boomer shooters, all you need is the most basic braindead AI to get the job done. So i have a very biased opinion about why i don't think they're attempting slightly more complex things. It's usually because they still cannot achieve AA levels of design.
I'm playing Hitman Codename 47 right now and even i know that not a single indie developer is capable of designing this. In the rare non existent scenario that someone who might have an idea of what to do they'll just ask for crowdsourcing funds anyway and it will take them an an inordinate amount of time to develop. But I've seen no such attempts so the indie scene are practically making amateur games in my eyes.

There are some projects that might have the potential to be impressive like Core Decay but those are too few and far between. As far as i know that games ambitions are too high. I should say I'm unimpressed with a majority of them and i don't think anyone who could design something good will ever go anywhere.

Why do creatively bankrupt people always just mash different things together like it is some groundbreaking concept? It feels like a crude imitation of how smart people think. I'm personally making a game and sort of taking cues from vampire survivors type gameplay because I know that is trendy and good for a first project. But other than a few similar gameplay loops, I'm pretty much completely making it up as I go using stuff like universal themes to build something that feels compelling. Are these people incapable of coming up with something without directly having a reference to copy?
>>

it's the "putting the entire plot summary in your light novel title" of indie games

Why did top left list 2 anime? Indies need to cannibalize anyone who can't get the template right.
>>
>>736134361
Anime inspiration would honestly work out a lot more than videogame inspiration as you are bringing something new to the table. But given most of these people, it is probably just a vague label applied because they liked something.

I really like your post, anon. It's very difficult to imagine 70 iq people existing -- you must "function" on a very different level cognitively than me -- but sometimes people like you just pop up. It's even funnier when they try to act smart and sharp. It's AI, right?

Literally anyone with a healthy brain would have taken a glance at that image and understood that it's indie devs replying to the same Tweet and using that same format as some sort of joke/meme/viral marketing tactic. Only an idiot could have gone "same? It be out of control bot!"

>>
>>736119513
It's like a food analogy: People don't like it because it's overused but they're still very effective at getting the point across.
>>
>>736135362
There are layers to it. The next one after the trendy ironic marketing is that the irony is lost on the devs themselves, because this particular joke happens to perfectly expose what their game amounts to (very little for the rare discerning consumer)
