resident evil coined the phrase even though it should more accurately be called "action horror" and silent hill is just "horror" or "psychological horror" if you want to be fruity
taking damage from enemies and needing healing items is not some unique thing, and if that counts as "survival" then most fucking games are a "survival FPS" or a "survival RPG" or whatever
But people cling to survival horror to seem cool, even though again in practice it doesn't fit and most of the "classic" examples are actually designed first and foremost as speedrun obstacle courses where your goal is to beat the game fast enough to unlock a super weapon you probably won't even use

You could argue that all genres are ultimately just marketing, but survival horror is one of the most blatant. It's deeply embarrassing to see people who think their opinions matter using it unironically.

The opening of 1 is actually tense for a new player, who's just learning the controls and is faced with fast dogs and flying guys.
There's a reason the conventional wisdom since the NES is to introduce flying enemies in Level 3 or later.
Sure, it becomes trivial as you go, but all good games do imo.

As far as I can gather, Survival Horror isn't a real genre, but rather a marketing buzzphrase meant to describe Resident Evil (the first one) specifically, but gaymers who don't know what words mean started using it to describe any scary game and started criticizing them based on criteria the games weren't even intending to live up to.
