It was interesting game at the time when real-time physics based puzzles were a new thing. Unfortunately playing it now, it is pretty mediocre game, and lives forever in the shadow of its predecessor.
>It was interesting game at the time when real-time physics based puzzles were a new thing. It wasn't even interesting then. People who weren't moronic Valve fanboys were calling it overrated at the time for being a movie game with a loose collection of simplistic physics puzzles attached. They were correct then, just as they are correct now.
I tried playing recently and the pacing is so incredibly bad. Why does the game start with a bunch of plot dumping and then to water hazard. You're in transit for the majority of the first half of the game. There's no standout levels besides like Ravenholm which itself overstays it's welcome. It's absolutely a product of its time
Portal mogs hard

It being one of the highest rated games of all time is fucking crazy. Its not terrible by any means, but any other single player fps from that era or even prior is much more enjoyable, including hl1. Hl2 feels like a slow, boring tech demo
>>736128523my main issue with it was lack of atmosphere. not much music except in certain areas, and i just feel like things were devoid of soul. like this was just some physics engine tech demo 1st, game 2nd
>>736128523a majority of the anons on here probably don't even know about this game or even played itbut yes for its time it was a great game that has slowly become outdated for modern video game standardsalyx was cool but the direction they went for the story was weird?
>>736129556The same is true of Ocarina of Time but nobody wants to have that conversation

episode 2 mogs all other half life crap
>>736129067>portal 1Perfection, seamless blend of dark humor mixed with the game letting you enjoy the puzzles, never feel like you're wasting 20 minutes on pointless cutscenes, a neat little package that lasts just as long as it needs to and no longer>portal 2Self aggrandizing, never lets up on the fact that portal 1 was a masterpiece and this is the sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed games of recent years, humor is obnoxious lolsowacky more often than actually witty, constantly pauses the game to force more dialogue down your throat and to ogle at setpieces, gets stale while there's still another couple hours of gameplay to get throughIt really is a direct parallel of hl1->hl2

>>736128523Overall I like 2 more for the varied environments but the military AI was incredibly good in 1 and honestly I have not seen AI as good since, it's a bit of a mystery to me
>>736131639>Shooting the helmetHalf-Life Source was such dogshit for removing it.
It's funny that nobody gives a shit about physics in videogames anymore. We thought it was the future.
the only fun enemies to fight in HL2+eps are Hunters and fast zombies because their movement and decision-making isn't rate-limited by infuriatingly long animations for transitioning between movement states and action states and they can do more than just move-and-attack or stand-and-attack
>>736129671>HL2>Lacking Atmosphere If all a games atmosphere is to you is its music then that makes sense, but otherwise HL2's atmosphere is its best aspect.
If you're not playing Half Life 2 with the VR mod in 2026 then what the fuck are you even doing
>>736131902the only reason it isn't is because fags like yourself salivated over iterations of photorealism to the point that games can't even have working mirrors anymore
>>736131902It needs to come back around
>>736128523still waiting on that dude to finish the final version of his Krystal Alyx Vance replacer mod before I play though the game again.
>>736131902I do, most games that implement it properly are immediately more enjoyable for it. Oddly enough, the only games I see frequently make use of physics now are 2D indie games or VR titles.
