Marathon is unironically the best extraction shooter in the market.

If what you're looking for is the extraction shooter experience.

If you want fun stories with strangers then yes, ARC Raiders takes it.

Otherwise Marathon does everything better than EVERYTHING else!

It takes patience and time to learn the game and once you do, it’s amazing.

This is actually one of the best shooters you will ever play!

Why did arena shooters die? I never understood battle royales or extraction shooters, what is fun about tons of down time in shooters? Don't you just want constant action? Genuine questions
>>
>>736130694
Tarkov is too sweaty, if you spawn in with randoms they can (and do) just team kill you and take your stuff.
Arc is for babies, it's boring because everyone gets along and there's no real reason to kill other players, so it's just meh pve.
I found Hunt to be a pain because of the forced 15 minute boss battles that alert everyone on the map, there's people that just roll you for the sake of it.
I find marathon to be a happy medium, like a streamlined Tarkov, you almost always wanna kill others on sight and the PVE is just there as a distraction.
>>
>>736129620
So do journos kiss a dev's ass cause of their constant virtue signaling, or do devs constantly virtue signal to buy favor with journos?
>>
Marathon is ugly so I hope it flops.
>>
>>736131169
these kinds of games generate a bunch of tension, if you re-spawn in 5 seconds it doesn't matter if you die.
if you lose a bunch of shit you collected over 20 minutes( or multiple runs) suddenly death is scary, and you and the other guy really dont want to lose the fight.
so you get more interesting interactions, people run away, people leave a fight halfway through, someone with little to lose is more aggressive etc.

it's kinda like laser tag vs paintball, or poker with real money instead of tokens, people are less brave when it gets hurt to be shot.
>>
>>736131169
People don't actually like 1v1 style games
It was always padded by the huge amount of people who played casual/single player
>>
>>736131321
I guess I can understand that, I just don't have that personality. I don't enjoy playing hardcore modes, or real life gambling at all. Maybe I'm just not a risk taker and that's why these don't appeal to me.
>>
>>736129620
What is an extraction shooter? I can't keep up with all these new terms.
>>
>>736131557
they dont appeal to a lot of people, it's stressful and if you spent all day as a wagie I'd get not wanting to come home and be stressed in a game too.
a lot of people are also sore losers who will blame everything but themselves for a loss and that feeling gets buried when they can immediately respawn/next round and shoot someone else.

these games are for people who want bigger highs and lows.
>>
>>736131557
They don't appeal to me either. I don't care about digital stuff and it never stresses me out to lose at a video game.

So it's just less exciting overall because there is less going on.

I do like this game but I was hoping it was going to lean towards more pve-looting rather than being basically a straight pvp arena shooter with superfluous looting. Unfortunately I still like Tarkov a lot more but I really did try to give it a chance, maybe made it to lvl 65, the loop is just all fucked up and these games always devolve into a spawn rushing meta.
>>
>>736131557

I had a similar mindset to this until I started playing modded SPT. I've been playing that for over a year now and actually have gotten the itch to play one seriously in PVP, but since I'm a linux faggot I can't.
Marathon would be right up my alley if it wasn't for the anticheat, since Tarkov still doesn't allow Linux and Marathon is presumably at least slightly less of an unoptimized piece of shit.
Any time PVE is brought up in these games people get defensive, but I thoroughly believe if extraction shooters are ever going to be less niche, you have to let people get used to them through a PVE mode.

I just like the idea of PVP with risks because it makes people (usually) play less like retards since there's something at stake.

They became adversarial at the same time that all media was instructed to become adversarial toward the public. I was a teen in the 90s and early 00s and subscribed to multiple magazines. The writers and editors seemed affectionate toward gamers and determined to be helpful. That vibe was usually pretty obvious.

Some people think it started with Gamergate but I think that was a coincidence, since the real story is what happened behind the scenes at ALL of these media companies simultaneously.

Bungie put a lot of time and money into this game for it to flop. They are currently astroturfing everywhere with shills echoing the same sentiments.
“Having a blast” is used unironically.
“Hooked” and talk of the game being “addictive.
“I can’t stop thinking about this game” or “I dream about it”
“Skill issue” or talk of players “not being good enough” to play it.
“No life” and talk of players having nothing better to do than hate on the game.
Invariably most of the shills use one of these talking points from a Bungie approved list of talking points. If you spent a good time reading the steam forum, IG comments and the threads on here, the pattern is unmistakable and it’s obvious and undeniable that this game is in a desperate PR battle with paid shills trying to force a narrative. On this board Marathon threads that are frequently deleted, and this same OP is posted regularly word for word with very little variation. Overall, people who dislike the game seem genuine with organic low effort posts and the defenders of the game mostly have very prepared responses. On IG they are downright fanatical in paragraph long responses and trying to always get the last word.
I’m not exaggerating when I say there is probably more people shilling for the game online to gain control of the narrative around marathon then actually playing the game. I hope Bungie fails with the manipulation of the narrative around their shitty game.

It was already forgotten about by 2001 and even then most of the great Mac games were the indies of that system.

You are willfully ignorant. Or you lack pattern recognition. Maybe you’re one of the paid shills. I considered making a more detailed analysis of the shilling and making a chart with comparisons of screen shots from across different threads at different times. It’s very easy to see when the exact same talking point is regurgitated with only slight variations across multiple platforms. It’s completely obvious they are given exact guidelines of what to say and just told to word it differently. This is obviously nothing new, and, Bungie is a multibillion dollar investment from Sony one of the largest mega corporations, it’s not hard to grasp they would use bots. Even small time YouTubers bot streams for clout, it’s very stupid to think Bungie wouldn’t try to “consensus crack” to get the game to sell. The desperation of shills gaslighting and posting canned talking points is kind of satisfying because I know these assholes are shitting bricks the game is sinking.

This is totally true, and Why Arc Raiders is the perfecr inbetween, and also so hottly debated.
It's genuinely a great game. The recent update fully cements that (and it runs great on linux), but I AM NOT A RISK TAKER! so this genre appealing to me at all with a game like Arc surprised me. It all comes down to careful balance, and deeply engaging enemy AI. Arc enemies, esp. The flying ones are so scary in how smartly they move and track you, and the Vaporizer is the perfect testament to it. Few games these days have AI as good or fun to fight- they don't all have to be super complex in their behavior either, it's enough clever ai with careful complimentary enemy design that makes it right.

PC Gamer during the 90s and early 2000s was one of the best.
It got worse and worse over the years as the 2007 financial crisis hit and the internet overtook magazines, but the website was ok
The merger of Politically Correct Goymer and PC Gamer UK in 2010 did unmitigated damage to it and by 2012 the website was a completely worthless piece of shit.
Now it's just a clickbait farm with AI writing.

I wonder if anyone in the gaming industry ponders how they turned the market into this? Video games used to be fun, happy, good-times but decades of browbeating your audience with predatory tactics verbal lashings on public platforms and cheap penny-pinching strategies through remakes/remasters/rereleases has soured the consumer.

I'm sure everyone that works in the industry thinks that it wasn't their fault, but enough weird degradation tactics over time has turned their once-easy audience into bitter cynics.

Maybe that's one of the core issues, but it's not like it's universal. Even well-known faces in gaming, people who have been with the industry for decades, are quick to take to Twitter to defend some truly awful games and berate their potential customers openly for disagreeing with them. Official corporate accounts will often take out the pitchfork and strike out at "haters" who have anything negative to say, seemingly not understanding they're actively biting the hand that feeds them.

It strikes me as odd that this behavior has been allowed to fester for so long it's started almost corrupting their own audience to the point where you're either a complete gray-brained cattle who will buy anything if it has the right logo or you're a die-hard cynic who won't even consider modern games.
It just feels unnecessary and if the situation was handled with a bit more tact they could have kept their audience happier and thus more enthusiastic.

EA is a publisher. They pay development studios to develop games for them and take a (huge) cut of the profits (or losses). Development is extremely expensive and dev studios can't just magic up the millions they need to make a game, the publishers give them money but also have control over the development of the product.

Some companies such as Nintendo act as both developers and publishers; but yeah in short, publishers finance and distribute games.

I'm hooked on having blasts see you on Cryo Archives this game got legs !
>>
>>736129620
the game has been ruined by sweats. cryo archive & ranked were supposed to funnel them all into one place and let everyone else play dire marsh without being MLG 360 noscoped by a pro team from the other side of the map, but ranked is completely dead because there's no point in playing it and cryo is too punishing to run over and over again. the game is bleeding players because nobody is having fun getting shit on every single match.
Arc noticed most players didn't enjoy this and pivoted to cater to them, that's why it's still getting >100k players today. I think it's nice hardcore players have something like Marathon but the game is going to die if it stays this sweaty.

Ubisoft's CEO cited Metacritif review scores as a method of proving the quality of his games:
>Importantly, the quality of our games continues to improve, with Metacritic review scores rising from around 75 to 80–85, reflecting the ongoing focus and investments we are making to deliver exceptional player experiences. We remain fully committed to developing and expanding our popular franchises to attract more players, increase engagement, and grow these communities over time.

I don't think so, I genuinely think it's a great game with satisfying gameplay (especially the guns god damn they're nice) but it s entire shtick is "you're going to lose everything and have a bad time" and that just isn't appealing to most people. >Why did arena shooters die?
Laser guns went out of fashion.

What remains without laser guns? Realistic guns. Instant projectile travel time. Rocket launcher projectiles aren't dodgeable in real life either. This informs gameplay and slows things down to a more cautious style. You can't remain in view of an opponent without being hit.
At that point you've got realism so you may as well make other parts realistic too.

They're probably including sales that later got refunded to pad the numbers. The real laugh is that if we took them at their word for sales, just to break even with a $40 price tag marathon would have had to have had a budget under 50 million dollars. That's including marketing, and without accounting for valve/sony/xbox's cut of the sale. To escape the concordian timeline they have to somehow find another 4 million sales roughly

While you're there you might or might not find gear or supplies to make your next run better, or something or someone might kill you, causing you to lose everything you have.

This will always be here because TTK is too low, you can't risk not shooting on sight

BRs and extraction games have enough variance with the number of people in the map and gear that you don't have to totally own your losses as a skill issue. If people have a way to shift their failures to something outside of their control, it'll make the game and genre more approachable. Extraction games do that then pull it back by making failure punishing, so I don't think they'll ever truly stick as a PvP genre in the mainstream.
>>
>>736129620
the most fun i had with the game was in the first 5-10 hours before it got repetitive. that's about how long most of these journos will play the game so i get why they love it

The game is supposed to remain relevant for many years to come. If your experience, like that of most people, shows that the game becomes repetitive in less than 10 hours, that means the game is an absolute failure, especially considering that, once again, as with Helldivers 2, it sold far better on PC than on PS5, so there are far fewer players and sales on Sony’s flagship console than on PC

They are frequently in toxic positivity bubbles where that kind of behavior is encouraged and enforced. And it got worse because they get feedback filtered through the press and their PR people and in JP's case the localizers and translators. It's why so many companies took the wrong lessons from gg and concord.

Even on this game, the company line is that a small, dedicated group of haters got ahead of the GOTY, that should rightfully be a top 3 seller for the year and a monster at the awards from reaching it's audience, and just excluding those people from the public sphere will make them a winner.

They see Wendys on twitter and think they can pull off the same shit.

Saw the same shit with SW outlaws, Veilguard, AC shadows. It took highguard for people to even think there might be a problem with their approach.

Some time next year at the earliest. I don't think they can afford not to keep it on life support for a while longer.

What flak does helldivers deserve? They sell it for $40, you can find the currency to buy the battle pass in-game, they release new content faster than most people can play it, and the only time they really pissed off their community was Sony's fault and not the developers. What the fuck does it take to satisfy your dumb ass?

That's funny, because I just saw a Steam thread for Marathon lamenting how the Marathon reddit is entirely gatekept by mods who don't allow negativity, and bot accounts all astroturf the fuck out of any criticisms anyone posts.

Wasn't that Wendy's account mostly engaging in playful banter with it's customers and only really shanking rival competitors though?
I don't remember many of the posts but most I saw seemed to be taking mean-spirited jabs at Burger King or McDonald's or the other fast food chains.
