Let's talk about strategy rpgs. I just finished chapter 1 of Unicorn Overlord and I'm having fun. After putting the game on expert difficulty, it doesn't feel like I'm fighting an army of tards anymore. If you choose to play this game, you want to play it on hard or the max difficulty. Normal is just way too easy. Yahna is best girl. Also, the story was a little better than I initially thought. The plot is pretty generic, but I wasn't expecting Renault's depression arc of redemption where he larps as a different knight. There's really nothing truly wrong with it. I am sad, because similar to Fire Emblem and RPGs with huge casts, it's a shame that not everybody gets to interact with everyone in the supports. Of course, it would be insane if a developer was able to achieve that. It's just that I think it would have been funny if a country bumpkin like Rolf got to interact with a princess like Virginia. I like to pretend that Auch gets amazon positioned every night by Berenice because that would be funny.I thought about buying the monarch edition.
Even if it would be insane for every character to have rapports with each other, there are still some desperately missing. Like Renault and Scarlett. Huge potential here for some redemption and forgiveness.Yahna is my current maiden, but have yet to finish this playthroughCheck out Symphony of War, if you want more squad-building SRPGs. Not the same quality and presentation as Vanillaware, but another fun take on the genre.
>>736191290Even on the hardest difficulty the game is too easy. Later enemies outside of the boss of the map never have advanced equipment or edited fight ai so most enemies are dumb and easy to beat. Your teams can still be countered sometimes since enemies are rarely balanced but it's not hard to make teams that can kill 95%+ of the enemies that exist.
There is zero excuse for not having 3 rapports with Alain for every character, they aren't even voiced and most of them aren't even that long/memorable.A writer could do it in a couple days and the game was in development for an absurd time.
>>736191535>Spoiler and ScarlettThat's a massive oversight. How did they forget that?>Symphony Of WarThanks for mentioning that. It's on my backlog and I've been meaning to get around to it at some point.>>736191747I think I might belong in the special olympics. On expert, I'm having trouble with the first real mission in drakenhelm, where you can recruit Travis' sister. There's a lot of enemies with high health and defense.>>736192809If could see somebody making a mod for something like that if Vanillaware ever brings the game to PC.>>736192917Cute!>Travis is by the female furryWhat did the artist mean by this?
Will Square release a new Final Fantasy Tactics after the remake?
is uo really based on ogre battle? the original game and the n64 one are some of the most underrated srpgs.
>>736195969I don't know if Vanillaware said anywhere that UO is explicitly inspired by Ogre Battle, but it does play like a modern version. The best change is that UO doesn't have alignment.
>>736191290>There's really nothing truly wrong with it.It's basically unfinished. The last 2 zones feel incomplete compared to the 2 previous ones. The extra difficulty that unlocks is barely more difficult. None of the squads you fight ever have full gear. The last mission gives you units that you can't use on anything. There's no New Game+ equivalent. It just needed more funding, but the main dev had to fund the end of its development out of his own pocket. Also Rosalinde best girl.
>>736191290>Auto-battler for retarded gacha audience>StrategyKek lmao
isn't unicorn overlord too ez?
>>736196794>It's basically unfinished. The last 2 zones feel incomplete compared to the 2 previous ones.>None of the squads you fight ever have full gear>It just needed more funding, but the main dev had to fund the end of its development out of his own pocketI didn't know about those things. Hopefully, Overlord gets a sequel and- ideally- a Persona budget.>Rosalinde best girlShill her to me. Why go for her over another girl that seems to have autism for Alain like Melisandre?>>736196951I want to say it's in the same camp of Castlevania Symphony Of The Night. It's not too hard if you know what you're doing.
Love how this game makes /v/ seethe for years.
What "strategy"? That game is basically an autobattler. It's so shallow its essentially asouped up phone game
>>736198340>Why go for her over another girl that seems to have autism for Alain like Melisandre?Rosalinde also has autism for Alain and she is featured in every single conversation the game forces you to have about marriage, the marriage ring is elven technology, and she has additional dialogue during the marriage explanations if you max her affection prior to them. The game straight up wants you to marry her. She is best girl.
>>736198340>>736198686Actually, the only reason *not* to marry Rosalinde is because she's so OP that she can basically be her own unit and so the marriage rings can be seen to be "wasted" on her since her + Alain might be overkill and you might want to spread them apart, but the game is easy enough that truly considering your squads isn't something you need to min/max like that.
>>736198667>if I'm not manually inputting the same menu commands over and over again for a 60 hour JRPG, then I'm not playing the gamePeople like you are why these games usually suck ass
>>736198667There's more strategy and configuring your squad and your squad's gambits than there are in most JRPGs.
>>736191290Not gonna read all that but troubleshooter is the best srpg
>>736191290I prefer it when supports are limited. The newer FE games have way more supports now than the older ones did and you can see the writing quality suffer because of the sheer quantity of how many they have to write. So many of the supports end up being about complete nonsense and wacky antics that physically hurt to read through. Characters should only support people they have history or chemistry with. That's how it works in real life after all. Not everyone is going to be friends with everyone and it's fine.
>>736198667In this game, the strategy is all in the planning, rather than the execution if that makes any sense. Plus, it has the CRPG or FF12 gambit programming of how the units should act.>>736198686>>736198786Huh, I didn't think this would be a pro-choco elf game. I'll consider her. The call of hags is too strong for me, though.>>736198928That's on my backlog as well.>>736199020That's fair. I just get disappointed from a writing standpoint because it makes me wonder about "what if x and y interacted?" For example, Auch, Lex, and Selvie have entertaining enough personalities, so I want to see how they would react with different people.
>>736198667You faggots deepthroat SMT and whatnot as the pinnacle of strategy turn based RPGs when they are so braindead as fuck
>>736191290The best way to make a strategy RPG is to stop making it rely on the numbers and rolls like typical RPGs and make it more about positioning, good decision making, and outsmarting the opponent (not the easiest thing to recreate with AI unfortunately).Unfortunately pretty much all TRPGs are still glorified spreadsheet,l simulators with a dose of trial and error.
>>736199334>In this game, the strategy is all in the planning, rather than the execution if that makes any sense. Plus, it has the CRPG or FF12 gambit programming of how the units should act.Planning isn't exclusive to this game. RTS has planning. MOBA has planning. XCOM-like planning. But they sure don't turn the execution into a glorified cinematic experience battle cutscene with a single button push.
>>736199454What the fuck is the anti-press turn schizo doing in this thread?
>>736199632>D-deflection time!Fuck off. Not gonna let you weasel out of this. Tell me how traditional menu turn-based games like DQ and SMT aren't braindead when the combat is all about spamming weakness exploit/highest damaging moves every turn until you win the battle.
