It's not just the same map and same engine, it's the exact same fucking plot too>After a millennia, Ganon has awakened>An Ancient, Advanced race that fought ganon in ancient times has left their technology scattered about, you have the special ability to utilize it to its fullest potential>you are given most of these abilities in the tutorial, unlocking quality of life ones later>Ganons forces have also co-opted some of it, though>In an act of self-sacrifice, Zelda has been indisposed for an inordinately long time in an effort to help stop Ganon>(optional) You most travel all over the map to collect Zelda's memories to piece together what happened>(Optional) you must travel to the realms of the Zora, Gorons, Rito, and Gerudo to help them with a problem and acquire a special power from one of their long dead Champions who fought Ganon long ago>(Optional, some fucking how) you lost The Master Sword and you have to find it>People eat it the fuck upHow did they get away with this? What are the odds the next game in the series uses this plot again?
Right, but all those games that used the same plot as a Link to the Past are just fine.
>>736191624never as blatant as this one was. they'll follow the outline it set, sure, but this one copies the plot of the last almost beat-for-beat
>>736191394they found a formula that made them shitloads of moneytheres a real possibility that the future of the zelda series is gonna be this now
>>736191694At least they added a lot of new gameplay stuff. Or do you have complaints about that too oh who am I kidding of course you do.
>>736191990nah I actually think TotK gameplay is better than BotWthe plot is ass though.
>>736192182Yeah, but I subscribe to the John Carmack school of thought when it comes to plot in video games.
>>736191394>How did they get away with this?"I'm gonna buy it anyway because it's FUCKING ZELDA/POKEMON/MARIO/NINTENDOOOOOOOOO"
>>736191394>a millenniaA millennium. Millennia is the plural.
>>736192182>TotK gameplay is better than BotWNo it isn't.
>an ancient evil named ganondorf awakens>Zelda is indisposed doing who knows what>link must travel to the other domains to obtain macguffins, including the master sword>link gets all the macguffins and banishes Ganon back to the shadow realmThis is every single Zelda game except for links awakening. Why are you just now complaining
>>736192660the ultrahand is objectively more fun to use than the shiekah slatethis is indisputable
>>736192838ultrahand threw and possibility of challenging puzzles out the window.
>>736192775see>>736191694
>>736191394$70 for the tiktok dlc is where they lost me as a customer, desu.
>>736192660NTA butBetter bossesBetter better Dungeon Lead ups and dungeons>More variety>Far far better finale>Better sidequest>Actual reasons the fight things>Actual caves vs.....nothingYeah, it's more fun. But is it 6 years worth more fun? Maybe not. Playing both back to back shows how lacking BotW actually was (though still a good game).
>>736192775It's more like if the plot of majoras mask involved traveling back and fourth 7 years in time and saving the Six Sages (different ones but same race as the last batch) to defeat ganon againalso zelda shows up again in disguise but its a different disguise from sheik on the same map with the same characters
>>736191394the plot sucked but the game was amazing
>>736192976>Better better Dungeon Lead upsagree>and dungeonsdisagree. Totk's temples are more aesthetically varied, but outright worse to play through than even Botw's were.>Better sidequestsalso disagree. Botw sidequests were more memorable. I honestly feel the only great sidequest from Totk was the one where you rebuild lurelin village, and even that was a bit dull from a gameplay perspective.>Actual reasons the fight thingsCould not be less true. You have LESS reason to fight anything in Totk as weapon fusion reduces the value of weapon new pickups, it has the literal opposite effect of what they intended and put me off nearly all optional combat encounters in Totk as I hated having to fuse more junk to my weapons in the dogshit UI.>Actual caves vs.....nothingTrue, some of the caves are cool. However, I would've preferred the original plan which would've added caves to BotW but instead they released this bloated half-sequel.
>>736193173in botw you didn't want to fight trash mobs because you'd just break your good weapons to get worse sticks and bones
>>736193457I wanted to fight them because it was fun, TotK made it unfun with the terrible weapon fusion mechanic that is all but mandatory to use (since they deliberately made non-fused weapons far weaker)
>>736192976I agree with most of that. Totk had much worse shrines though, because the gadgets you had made making hard shrines too hard. They were all easy gimmicks
Genuinely one of the least soulful things Nintendo has ever done, it’s insanely corporate. You can tell the pitch went like this >what if we took breath of the wild >and made it suitable for short form video content like tiktok And that’s it. That’s the fucking game. It exists to facilitate marketing.
>>736193540hm, i didn't mind it at all, takes all but two seconds to fuse something
>>736193173We may agree to disagree but atmosphere and music also heavily matter to me as well as bosses when it comes to dungeons. I think when you consider the whole sequence of events (lead ups, dungeons and bosses) the main beats of TotK hit much higher as a whole than BotW. In terms of Sidequest, there were a few more memorable ones in TotK than in BotW. Both these games certainly needed better quality overall, but the sidequest with Hudson's daughter, gathering the music troupe for the fairies and even goofy shit like the underpants gang in the cave felt more Zelda like than much of BotW's.As far as combat is concerned, in BotW you could literally just farm Hyrule Castle and never have to pick up anything else in the entire game. If you play smart in TotK (i.e using muddle Buds to turn enemies on each other, or smokescreen shrooms to sneak strike for consistent durability conservation), you could build up are large arsenal of mats to use as ammo. Now if the clunky UI was a large issue for you then fair, but I had FAR more fun engaging enemies in TotK.
>>736194087>underpants gang in the cavefucking hell i memory holed this, what the fuck was that
I can't even recall what any of the dungeons in botw and totk looked like. It's been years but I still remember certain rooms and aesthetics from seldom talked about dungeons like the Lakebed temple from TP or the Earth temple from WW. Nu Zelda has no sauce
>>736194087>I think when you consider the whole sequence of events (lead ups, dungeons and bosses) the main beats of TotK hit much higher as a whole than BotWI will say this: TotK has a significantly better ending (unironic kino especially with the buildup and music during all of it), and TotK does have better pre-dungeon quests. However, I strongly feel that TotK's dungeons (temples) are worse than the divine beasts from BotW in terms of actual gameplay, and I think it's a direct result of the ultrahand mechanic being too powerful to a fault. They clearly struggled designing puzzles or obstacles that would not be trivial to overcome.>sidequest with Hudson's daughterworse than the BotW tarrey town quest IMO>gathering the music troupedidn't enjoy it at all, felt like a flimsy excuse to have the player repair/build a vehicle then drive for about 30 seconds somewhere. Pointless filler content as far as I'm concerned.>goofy shit like the underpants gangthis was fun actually, and you've reminded me of the weirdly underutilized mechanic of joining battles in the game. What was up with that? They could've used that mechanic a lot more, I think there were only 4(?) places to do it in the entire game and they're all too easy.>combatI genuinely never used muddlebulbs or the shrooms or any of the other gimmick items as no combat encounter ever needed it. There was a chance for them to have the Depths require more tactical combat choices, but unfortunately there was zero reason to explore down there at all. There is literally only a single story quest down there (master kohga), even though the area is as large as the overworld? I'm still baffled by that decision honestly.I really feel that TotK suffered from having too many half-baked ideas that simply did not work together to make for a coherent adventure game. BotW was designed better in spite of its obvious faults.
>>736194250Apparently Ganondorf thought it was funny to have a bunch of dudes get killed in a cave nearly naked with no weapons.
>>736191394confirmed for not having played it
>>736194608I honestly view them as two halves of an incomplete whole. If they combined the best aspects of both:BotW's overall UI, Puzzles and Trial of the Sword DLC (and story?? Eh)TotK's Dungeon lead ups, bosses, variety and caves. The game would be legitimately better than both individually. And may have been a top entry for me.
>>736194880what did he get wrong?
>>736194992Yeah too bad they scrapped the original plans for BotW's DLC and turned it into TotK instead.
>>736194608Don't forget about the sky islands having fuck all to do and the biggest one being the tutorial area
>>736195057What a fucking rug pull that was>all the marketing focuses on the sky islands>even the game's boxart>there's barely any of them>even then, they're extremely repetitiveidk if it was technical limitations or what but they shouldn't have even bothered. I'd prefer if they cut the sky islands and focused on making the depths actually interesting instead, that area had so much potential and they fucked it.
>>736191394Errrrrm you're not supposed to pay attention to the plot tho? All your criticism is now invalid, please look at this sales chart which ends all further arguments.
