I prefer shield for early Guard.
Unfortunately the rerelease increased the level to unlock it but also added Slapshot which is absolutely busted.

Choosing one determines which abilities you get early
If you chose sword you would get scan early and learn all attacks early
If you chose shield you get defensive abilities earlier and you get more HP
If you chose staff you get +1 MP and learn magic abilities early

First choice determines the order of abilities from leveling, both choices determine starting stats. The questions determine whether you level up faster early/later/equally.

Whatever gives you the guard first is easily the better option.

focusing on the skills that actually help you get through the game are the most important, minmaxing doesnt matter because you get so strong even without it, except on level 1 runs where i think the extra mp is one of the few actual ways that you can get a power increase

The only acceptable option is +Staff. Literally anything else is incorrect as you can't get the MP anywhere else which means less Aeroga/Curaga/Graviga/Thundaga uses and it takes you longer to pass the threshold of dealing high damage to enemies.

Staff = funnest playthrough. Having more MP allows you to power farm mobs, allowing quick level ups and spells are satisfying in this game. Solid skill learn order too. Extra 2 MP at max level, which ends up being alot of extra spell casts if you fill up the orange gauge with melee.

Picking shield for early leaf bracer is the bitch ass pussy option. It's not hard to just run away and heal so it doesn't get interrupted. You also don't need 8 item slots like ever.

Sword is just dogshit and the sword abilities aren't that fun to use in KH1 imo and they eat up too much mp, which you'll have less of if you chose sword.
