You need to separate actual game players and content tourists from each other because content tourists have NOTHING of value worth saying or listening to. A basic difficulty wall like this is a decent gate to keep them out, or at least make it easy to identify, exclude and silence them if they attempt to muscle in on discussion they are not welcome/wanted in.

Not quite, it's usually a design issue. In sdomething like SM64 you have lots of movement options that you need to actually master to skip content
In modern indie 3D platformers, they just give you a double and triple jump you can do at the push of a button at any time, so any aspect of mastery is thrown out the window
