The sad reality is that this subgenre of RTS games don't sell. The last one was what, Brutal Legend?
You'd need good devs to do the game justice but in turn making the game would likely sink the studio. And as much as I like Sacrifice, it is not worth sacrificing some actually good studio (of which there aren't many) for.

In AoM, god abilities doesn't have cooldown. They can only be used once. And that really makes you think.

You can now build Town Centers everywhere.
Favor is a normal resource that stacks infinitely.
God portraits became Marvel slop with Netflix lighting (Khronos became your typical purple-pink villain color monster, Gaia became femGroot).
Old god portraits got fed into an AI and thrown out as a paid DLC.
They removed variance from starting positions so you can now mindlessly play a single build order like in AoE2 (and unlike OG AoM), ofc even against fucking AI.
Et cetera.

It is not quite as big of a shit fountain as most remakes but it's definitely not of the same quality as the OG game.

wtf are you talking about? even in the OG game you always started next to a gold mine, a bunch of chickens and a line of trees. AoM always had less variance than even AoE2 back in the day

That's because myth units were scaled to the age they were available in. Anubites are strong in Classical but get outclassed in later ages. Very few myth units (outside of support and siege types) were worth using beyond their age.

Retold gives every myth unit +20% HP and damage every age after they're unlocked so now they can better keep up instead of falling off hard.

I don't like AoE2, but I know it's pretty successful gameplay/design wise so I assume it makes sense. Doesn't sound like a big problem...

So portraits and blood/corpses, plus a mix up on balance changes.
All in all wouldn't call it "mangled". I was expecting something worse, as remasters tend to be

The only version of aom I played was a version a friend modded that massively decreased build times, multiplied the resources in any given source, and made the unit cap 1000.
We'd play it on LAN and every game would be a competition with myself to see how many chariots I could send to their doom. Fun times. I'd have like 5 buildings just infinitely spitting them out.
