The console got its ass raped by the PS2 largely because the PS2 was a much more powerful console but it also had the ability to play movies. The PS2 was a lot of peoples first DVD player including myself.
>>
no
>>
what is this revisionism? dreamcast got raped because it was super easy to play burned discs on it.
>>
Sega was already sunk by the dreamcast dude, they simply did not recover from the infighting in the 4th gen and their failure in the 5th gen. They just didn't realize they were already swamped before they were most of the way to release.
DC was discontinued barely a year after the ps2 came out. They had made the decision a year, at least, before then.
>>
even if dreamcast played DVDs, shipped all its games on DVDs, made you coffee, sucked your dick etc., it would've still been brutally killed in 2001 because PS2, gamecube and xbox all had significant hardware advantages over it that directly translated into better looking, better performing, more complicated games
the dreamcast had some of its own niche advantages like order-independent transparency and more VRAM than PS2 but it didn't comprise nearly enough to justify developing for dreamcast over its competitors, it just amounted to minor annoyance when porting a game from dreamcast to other hardware
the only scenario in which dreamcast survives the whole generation is one in which none of the other consoles from that generation come out
>>
it would have been an additional barrier to the fact it was easily pirated almost day one.

Sega raped themselves

Dreamcast would have won with this lineup.
>>
also. even though it's lowkey contested, it didn't have a second analogue. yes the controller was pretty decent even daring for the time but the lack of second analogue even at the time was a limiting factor.
>>
>>736218762
not to mention some of their "worse" games like billy hatcher would have still been exclusives
>>
>>736218762
Which console had the best SEGA games after the Dreamcast died? I wanna give it to the PS2, but most of the Sonic games were the shittiest ports.
>>
No not really. Maybe it would have lingered a bit longer, but nah. I'm a dreamcast fanboy and that just isn't even close to fixing the situation it was in
>>736218397
>>736218672
Did that actually hurt the console at all? Or are you just basing that on the fact they made a revision to fix the issue? I think it would have to be pretty significant to really compare to anything else surrounding the dreamcast
>>
they didnt spend enough on advertising even gamers didnt really know about it. I never saw a display where I could play one. Knew two people who owned one thats it.
>>
>>736218941
dude dreamcast piracy was a "day 1 everyone did it" affair, they couldn't make any money on the damn thing.
>>
Sony patented DVD. Same as Cd, Blu-Ray and betamax. Now they have nothing to fuck people over with.
>>

>Did that actually hurt the console at all?
you don't get it: at the time the PSone and the PS2 needed to be HARD MODDED. meaning you gave your console to a backway alley shop, they opened it, voided the warranty and chipped it. of course with no guarantees that it would not break the console. the dreamcast playing pirated games with a simple disc was a death sentence.
>>
Sega's fate was already sealed after the 32X and the Saturn. The Dreamcast was a dead console walking.
>>
>>736218247
Maybe. there would've been a way for the system to last long but in the long run it would've been a retail to wholesale business change for the system for SEGA: great system for the money's worth for the average customer but at a slight loss for SEGA

The DC failed because of an utter lack of forward thinking despite being innovative with the (later) built-in LAN port and VMUs
>betting on the wrong horse (arcade ports) instead of long lasting console experiences
>lack of killer apps like FFX, DMC, or GTA that either were missing or would be impossible to port without multiple discs/cutbacks
>betting on the wrong horse that was Shenmue
>GD-ROMs instead of DVDs in terms of storage capacity
>the ease of piracy via CD-ROMs, defeating the point of GD-ROMs in the first place
>lack of dual analog
>utterly retarded controller design in general
>the novelty of VMUs wearing off quickly while also being battery hogs
>selling consoles at a huge loss while your company is on the verge of bankruptcy
>>
>>736218654
Nah.
Even if the PS2 was underpowered (and it was at first due to programming skill walls) the brand power of playstation was insanely high.
>>
>>736218247
DVDs had basically nothing to do with it. Sure this led to increased normalfag adoption, but that was just for the DVD player functionality, just like how its ability to run Linux made the PS2 into just a cheap cluster computing solution.
Dreamcast suffered because of conflict between two branches of the company, one trying to push the legacy solution and one trying to push the new thing, so the Dreamcast launched too early with no games and no games on the way.
>>736218672
Piracy only affects products that are sold poorly. If ease of piracy were an issue, then GOG wouldn't be a thing.
>>
>>736218247
PS2 killed the Dreamcast.
Gamecube and Xbox would have done nothing to it.
The same month in 2000 Segas Gran Turismo was releasing on the Dreamcast Sony's showed a prototype of Gran Turismo 3 to humilliate Sega.
It was doomed.

I think you misunderstand what I'm saying. Yeah that is a problem. Is there anything that actually has something concrete to say that had anything significant to do with how the dreamcast went? It was already on the path it went down from the get go. Basically, I'm asking if there is anything to make such a statement more than just an opinion that sounds right to you. I'm interested if there is proof of anything. I've never looked into it because that fact never really interested me enough to consider it even close to being 'the' reason it went the way it did
>>
>>736219157
yet that should only have made the DC hardware more popular. the fact that you could easily pirate the games and still nobody was interested in getting one means something much more fundamental was the cause of its low sales. namely, sega sucked and nobody wanted another console from them.
