Was the characterization that bad in the original game or am I just remembering it with rose tinted goggles? I'm currently going through the Remake and every character is insufferable. All the main characters are retarded, all the secondary characters are one extremely basic joke that they just repeat straight faced 20 times. I find myself skipping everything just to make it more bearable.

The original game had a few big scenes for Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and Barret, but in general it was much more momentum-focused on the things you went through and Cloud's mental fuckery than it was actually having a developed cast at length. A big problem with most of the Square games back then, and you'd really only see them start breaking that trend in 10. The remake stuff DOES give the crew a lot more to chew on and act out, but it's kind of really weirdly fluff without a whole lot of substance most of the time, or strange changes for the sake of making retcons and rewrites for the modern approach.The only reason I honestly appreciate the 7 cast besides nostalgia now is because the remake stuff gives them a lot of cross-interactions with each other that feel a lot more like a motley crew, but Rebirth doubles down so hard on Cloud mindfuckery that it really takes center stage again and keeps most of the fun stuff to the first half and optional content.. where they went overboard kooky japanese humor wacky for the sake of it and overcompensate everything in return.
RPG makers used to know that less is more. A blank character is easier to project onto. The story in the game is what the player does. The player should identify with the characters and the best way to do that is to not have narrative.Recent jrpg have insisted on making party members obnoxious. FF7R is unplayable because characters do not shut the fuck up. Dragon Quest XI is the worst by far and the only game I've actively been sexually harassed in.You want characters done right you can look at Rance. Instead of bullshit faggotry the character is actually an ideal to shape the player and make them a better person.
